Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • Choosing Between Radial or Bias Tires on a 5,000 Pound Fifth Wheel Travel Trailer
If the option is available I would recommend the radial tire over the bias tire because of better stability, better ride comfort and it will also dissipate heat better. Heat buildup inside a tire is what will cause many problems with tires. Radial trailer tires will also give you longer tread wear as long as the tires are maintained properly. For either type of tire you will want to make sure to inflate the tire to the maximum air pressure that is listed on the sidewall of the tire. Also,...

  • Recommended Wheels And Tires To Replace B78 13 Tires On Landscaper Trailer
I would be happy to help! To replace your B78 13 tires you will want to go with a 175/80R13 as it is the closest tire size, but there are a few load rating options to consider based on the weight of your trailer when loaded. I recommend going with either the Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range C # AM3S140 you were looking at which has a load rating of 1360lbs at 50 PSI, or the # AM31233 which has a load rating of 1610lbs at 65 PSI. • Replacement Hubs That Use the Inner Bearing LM67048 and the Outer Bearing LM11949
From the measurements provided in the photos, it looks like you have an inner bearing that has a 1.250 inch inner diameter and an outer bearing # LM11949, which has a .750 inch inner diameter. This leads me to believe you have some variation of agricultural hub, like the Redline Trailer Hub Assembly # AH15450ECOMP. This will use the inner bearing # LM67048 that will have the inner diameter of 1.250 inches. That being said, this has a 4 on 5 bolt pattern and will not match your 5 bolt wheels. What...

  • How To Determine The Proper Replacement Tire On A 1998 Coleman Sea Pine
The metric tire size 175/80-13 is the modern equivalent of your original B78-13ST tire. You have two options to consider when choosing a tire: Radial or Bias. A Bias tire consists of several overlapping rubber plies running from a 30-45 degree angle. They are generally used for more local driving. A radial tire is designed for highway travel and also provides a much smoother and comfortable ride. A bias ply tire has a stronger sidewall, a radial tire offers more flex for better ground...

  • How to Compensate for Trailer Coupler Much Shorter Than Tow Vehicle's Receiver
It sounds like you're trying to make sure that your trailer is towed level, which is always important for safety. However, by the looks of that trailer, the fenders you've got on there are going to really limit the size tire you can put on there. You normally want to leave at least 3" between the top of the tire and the fender so that you don't damage the tires when going over any bumps or anything, so I'm not sure that adding a larger tire is going to be the best solution. It sounds like...

  • Recommended Solution to Help with Absorb Bumps on Small Utility Trailer
I'm not necessarily sure that the air pressure of the tires is the main culprit here since the smaller tires have a higher air pressure to compensate for the lower capacity; you could absolutely go with a larger tire like the Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range C # AM3S140 to give yourself a higher capacity tire that doesn't require as much air. However, I think the light weight of the trailer also makes it a bit more prone to the bouncing...

  • What is the Diameter of Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13 Inch White Wheel # AM3S140
When inflated to the maximum psi as indicated on the tire, which is how trailer tires should be inflated, the diameter of the tire, or height from the ground to the top of the tire, will be 24 inches for # AM3S140. This would mean that if you measure from the center of the pilot hole on the wheel, it should be 12 inches to the top and 12 inches to the bottom. However, when under load, the weight of the trailer is going to push down towards the top of the tire and the bottom of the tire...

  • Will Changing to a Wider and Taller Trailer Tire Help Reduce Road Shock on a Bumpy Road
Actually the more surface area of the tire that touches the road, the more you will feel every bump on the ground. An ST175 or 185/80-13 tire is wider than a 4.80 x 12 so it would be worse as far as a bumpy ride goes. What I recommend adding is some suspension enhancement, see link. Adding some suspension enhancement will absorb road shock and pro-long the life of the suspension. It will definitely help with those bumpy gravel and dirt roads.

  • Replacing a ST155/80R13 Tire on a Trailer with Very Little Fender/Tire Clearance
The 155/80R13 tires aren't around much anymore and are increasingly hard to find. The closest match is in fact the 175/80D13. They are 1.2 inches wider in diameter, meaning they are only 0.6 inches closer to the frame (half of 1.2). If these are making contact with the frame (you should have at least 3 inches of clearance), then there are some things you can do to improve those clearance issues. One thing you can do is to use a lift kit, especially an over-under lift kit like the Dexter...

  • Upgrading from 5.30-12 Tires on Trailer To 13" Tires
In order top upgrade tire sizes on a trailer you'll need to be sure you have space to do so, we recommend at least 3" on top of the tire and 1" inside. The next size up from a 5.30-12 is a 175/80-13, the Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" White Wheel part # AM3S140 is what I recommend if you have the needed space. • Should I Use Bias Or Radial Tires On My Utility Trailer?
Hey Daniel, I can help point you in the right direction. If I were you I would stick with the radial tires. Bias ply tires use a crisscross pattern for the layers of cord. This make for a more firm sidewall and this is more of an "old school" design opposed to the radial tires. Radial tires will give a smoother ride, better traction, better fuel consumption and will run cooler than bias tires. This allows them to generally last longer than bias tires.
