Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

I ordered these tires for my boat trailer as I have a family fishing trip to go on. And to my surprise they sent me two different size tires. Now I am in a bad situation because I have to take the time that I don’t have to call and explain to these people ( if I can get ahold of a person and not a computer) how they messed up my order. Then send the wrong one back and wait for the right one. In the meantime spend more money at a local tire shop for a cheap tire to get me through my trip. Then when the right tire comes in spend even more money having it installed.

  • Replacement Tires For an Old Trailer With B or D 78-13 Tires
It is most likely a 78-13 as that was an old tire size that was discontinued. The closest replacement is a 175/80-13. The B or D is in reference to the weight capacity of the tire. A Kenda ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire # AM1ST74 has a load rating B which is 1,100lbs per tire for this size. The Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10210 has a load rating of D which is 1,650lbs per tire. To determine which will work better for your trailer you can determine what your GVWR is...

  • Will The ST175/80-13 Trailer Tire Size Replace the B78-13 Tire Size
Yes, the Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire, # AM1ST74, is the replacement size for the B78-13 tire size. You will want to make sure the load capacity of 1,100 lbs. at 35 psi will be sufficient for your trailer. I also have the Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire-Load Range C, # AM10199, which is a radial tire in that size and has a load capacity of 1,360 lbs. at 50 psi. You will also want to make sure and inflate the tire to the maximum psi that is listed on the tire. Trailer...

  • What is the Correct Tire Pressure for the Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire part # AM3S158
I have a perfect solution for you but the Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" Aluminum Wheel part # AM3S158 aren't exactly what you want on your camper. You always want to run a trailer tire at it's appropriate pressure. Running one low on pressure can really add a lot of unnecessary heat build up and will drastically reduce it's weight rating. Instead use the Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire - Load Range B # AM1ST74 this tire offers an 1100 lb. weight rating at 35 psi...

You will want to remove the P165/80D13 tires from your camper because they are only a passenger car tire. A trailer tire will be labeled ST before the tire size to designate a special trailer tire. This will mean the tire is designed with stronger sidewalls to handle the extra loads that a trailer/camper will put on the tire. • Which Trailer Tire Size Replaces B78-13B Tires
B78-13 is an old tire size designation that isn't used much anymore. The modern trailer tire equivalent size is ST175/80-13. All of the tires on the trailer should be the same size, load range, and construction type (radial or bias ply). Having one that is a different size can cause uneven tire wear, tracking problems (how the trailer follows the tow vehicle), potential suspension issues, and unspecified weight carrying capacity. The 175/70-13 isn't a trailer tire size. If the tires on...

  • Can You Upgrade ST175/80D13 Tires On Utility Trailer
In order to determine if you can upgrade tire sizes you'll need to measure for clearance. We recommend 3" on top and 1" inside the existing tire. If you have more than this then you can move up a size, the next largest would be a 185/80-13 such as the Castle Rock ST185/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire part # LHCK105 (24.6" Diameter x 7.2" Wide). If not it's best to stick with the same size you have such as the Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire part # AM1ST74 (24" Diameter x 6.6" Wide).

  • What Does Trailer GVWR Mean for Maximum Cargo Weight Capacity and Can it Be Increased
When a manufacturer indicates a trailer's GVWR, which is the most it can ever weigh under any circumstances, this consists of the weight of the empty trailer itself plus the maximum cargo weight you can put in it. Under no circumstances do you want the loaded trailer to weigh more than the manufacturer's rated GVWR. Sometimes trailer makers may install axles whose combined rating is not exactly the same as the specified GVWR. The total axle capacity could be more than or slightly less...
