Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Just got this Spare tire and spare tire cover today, so far, very pleased with both the tire, which I ordered as a Spare for my utility trailer, and the spare tire cover, right after I installed them on my trailer, and took these pictures, it started to thunderstorm, so glad I got these pictures before it started to thunderstorm. Very happy with my purchase, hopefully I will never have to use the spare tire, but I'm glad I have it if I do need it. Also, customer service, was awesome, Kimberly was very Helpful, she helped me pick out my spare tire and my spare tire cover. Very happy with my purchase

Finally found a good tire package for my car hauler. Most sites had low value and not the proper size I had been looking for. This package met all my expectations and I did not realize how fast the service was. It is now on my front door! Delivery was beyond my expectations to have two tire and wheels delivered so quickly. Thank You for a great delivery time and what looks to be a great package for my hauler.

Using for a spare tire and wheel but haven’t put on the ground yet. Still holding air pressure

by:

Absolutely satisfied with my purchase from eTrailer! The tire/wheel came within a couple days, and mounted very easily to my camper trailer bumper! Also used the Ultra-Fab Folding Spare Tire Carrier for Trailers and RVs - Bumper Mount - UF15-954730 to mount the tire/wheel.

by:

Hard to find 5/5 trailer rim/tire locally as most utility trailers use 5/4.5- But not an issue for etrailer! In stock, good price and fast shipping!

by:

Absolutely horrible!!!! Sent me wrong size alternate tire and wheel. Then told me it was my fault and wouldn’t exchange. Never do business with this shit company again!!

by:

I purchased this tire for a spare for my new utility trailer. This is a Karrier / Load Star tire. I have had theses before on my boat trailer and have had good service from them. The trailer dealer wanted $150 plus tax for a spare with a name I’ve never heard of. I saved over $50! Excellent price, super-fast free shipping and no sales tax! What a deal! Etrailer is a great seller to purchase from.

by:

The tire fit and looks great, just what I wanted thanks to Kelsey.

by:

Awesome product. I have been running this tire/wheel combination on my trailer for more than 10 years. Very durable and dependable tires. The cost was $10 more that It would cost to order same product from nearest trailer supplier; 50 Miles away. So, less than cost of fuel to pick-up, after waiting a week to come in.
This assembly arrived at my door in 4 days. Perfect.

  • Replacing Trailer Tires With a Smaller Size
If you are referring to installing the ST185/80R13 tire on a 15 inch wheel, then it will not fit, unfortunately. That being said, if you are swapping both the tire and wheel, then yes it will work as long as the wheel has the same bolt pattern. You will want to measure said bolt pattern to double check. This should be done measuring from center to center of bolt holes right next to each other. If you get 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2" If you get 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern...

  • Trailer Wheel and Tire to Replace Size 205/75-14 with 5 on 5 Bolt Pattern
The closes tire and wheel combo we carry to your 205/75-14 tire size and wheel that has a 5 on 5 bolt pattern is a 205/75-15 like part # AM3S638. Going up in size the overall diameter is an inch larger and it's the same width. You need to make sure you have clearance between the tire tread and the underside of your fenders. You want about 4 inches if possible. With that bolt pattern I'm guessing this is an off-road trailer so the tire I recommended is a bias ply. They're better for off...

  • What does the D15 Mean in Tire Size ST205/75-D15
I think you are confusing the tire size numbers with load range. This size tire is available as a ST205/75-D15 or as a ST205/75-R15. The D indicates that the tire is a diagonal bias ply construction and the R indicates that the tire is a radial tire construction. Beyond the size and type, there are load ranges for tires. Most trailer tires are load range B, C or D. This number indicates how much weight the tire can bear at a certain inflation pressure. The tire and wheel combo you were...

  • ST Rated Trailer Tire Recommendation for Boat Trailer to Replace P235/75R15
The ST225/75 D15 size trailer tire would work great as a replacement for the passenger vehicle tire P235/75R15 that you currently have on your trailer. The tire will be a tiny bit narrower and shorter but it shouldn't be noticeable. The stiffer sidewall of the bias ply trailer tire will most likely sit taller when loaded anyway. It's very important to only use ST (specialty trailer) rated tires on a trailer. For a tire in the size you need the part # TTWSF22515D would work well. I attached...

  • Recommended 15 Inch Replacement for 205/75-14 Tire on Travel Trailer
A 205/75-15 tire is what I'd recommend. The tire would be 1 inch taller in diameter which would raise the ride height by 1/2 inch, and the tire would be about the same width as your existing tire, which is 8 inches. . If a Load Range D tire with a 2150 lb per tire/4300 lb per axle capacity would work for you, I'd recommend the Taskmaster Provider tire, part # TR20515D. • What Size Wheel and Tire Fits Trailer With 7k Axles and 8 on 6-1/2 Bolt Pattern
The size depends on the amount of clearance you have available on your trailer. It is recommended to have three inches of clearance on the top and two inches on the inside of the tire. Most trailers like yours with an 8 on 6-1/2 bolt pattern use 16" wheels and tires. An ST235/80R16 like the Provider # TA53MR has an outer diameter of 30.79" and section width of 9.25". A slightly larger ST235/85R16 like the # AM32743B has an outer diameter of 31.625" and section width of 9.37". I would...

  • Can a Load Range E Trailer Tire be Used in Place of a Load Range D Trailer Tire
Different size and bolt pattern wheels that take the same tire size will have different psi ratings. If your existing wheels are rated for 65 psi then it is less likely that they would also be rated for 80 psi which is what an ST225/75-15 load range E tire requires. Trailer tires should always be inflated to the maximum psi as indicated on the tire. The person you spoke with must not have known about the difference between trailer tires and passenger vehicle tires. Trailer tires are made...

  • Can Trailer Tire Size 225/75-15 Fit 6 or 7 inch Wide Trailer Wheel
The diameter of the tire would not change if you went to a narrower wheel by 1 inch. The wheel being narrower does not push the top of the tire up higher. A tire like the # AM10303 would work great. It fits tire widths of 6 inch to 7 inch in width too which means it would work well for you in that regard as well. I attached a link to a page that has all of the tire and wheels we offer in this size too. You'd need to select the bolt pattnern of your wheels from the filters to pick out a wheel.

It also appears that most have white spoke wheels. We definitely have these sized tire/wheel assemblies in stock and you will just want to confirm the bolt pattern of your trailer's wheels to assure you select the correct spare.
