Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Fast shipping, good tires, but the rims look like trash. See photos. Customer service says this is the way the should look, but it does not look like the picture they show on the site. Doubt I will ever use this site for future purchases.

Great wheel and quality tires

by:

The Kenda tire and wheel package made a great improvement on the "peace of mind" level of using my trailer to transport my dirtbikes. I "flipped" the axle to under the springs style and installed these 13' Wheels and tires making a better trailer all around!

by:

I mistakenly ordered a wrong rim the first time. I called Customer Service and they immediately facilitated a return, then helped me order the correct tire and rim. It showed up on my porch a few days later. Excellent service. Grateful.

by:

So far so good! I had a slightly bent rim on my old one. Luckily I was able to find the exact match here

by:

Tires shipped and arrived as expected. Happy with the tires for the price.

by:

Emily, the sales person, was very nice and also very professional. I'm very happy with the free shipping and extremely happy with the products. The tires are very nice especially considering the price. The wheels they're mounted on will enhance the overall look of my boat and trailer. I couldn't be happier.
Thanks
Wayne

I purchased two of these tires to replace my Carlisle Class B boat trailer tires. I just installed them on my trailer so I can't comment on how they perform. They are nice tires with the galvanized rims. I also purchased the Fulton Hi-Mount tire mount to use for my spare tire. Worked with Corey at eTrailer. Received my tires promptly. Appreciate the personalized customer service Corey provided.

I lived in Wentzville, MO while severing with the Marines in St. Louis. The town was full of good honest people and I think etrailer must follows in their footsteps. Me and my customers both order wheels and tries from etrailer. We think they are great.

by:

Super fast delivery. Tires and rims were just as described on the website. I used these on my Bayliner 18’ ski boat trailer. Perfect match for the old ones. The lug nuts on the trailer were frozen so I sprayed them with Liquid Wrench and inserted a 5’ long metal pole I happened to have over the socket wrench (see photo), and with the added leverage of the pole, was able to get all the lug nuts loosened.

GREAT service!!!!

Shipped fast, perfect fit, good experie nce

Good price great service. Ordered on Thursday and received on Sat. I’ve done business with etrailer before. Always been very happy with them.

by:

I love the tire & galvanized wheel and was delivered on time; great service & would highly recommend.

by:

These tires and wheels not only met my expectations but exceeded them. Couldn’t be anymore satisfied, these tires and wheels look great. Shipping arrived a day early and they were delivered in excellent condition. Anytime I need something from this company I will not hesitate to purchase. Rarely am I impressed with a product or a company as I am with e-trailer. Thanks

by:

Spare tire and Fulton mount arrived in perfect condition and on schedule. Nice addition to the boat, and way cheaper than my local marine dealer. Road trip approved.

by:

Just what I needed, perfect match for the other tires/wheels on our boat.

by:

Arrived quick and was exactly what I needed. Website was well organized and easy to search for the exact wheel and tire I was after.

by:

Arrived yesterday. Found a good spot to mount the tire. and had it all set in less than 30 minutes. And the wheel matches the ones on my trailer!

by:

I was looking for a matching wheel for my boat trailer and found what I was looking for at etrailer.com. it was competitively priced and delivery was quick.

by:

So far so good, not enough miles to give any useful feedback

by:

Great, fast service!

by:

The tires apear to be of a good quality. They look sharp installed. To make a better end result I took some black paint and painted the hub, springs, under side of fender, and the lug nuts. I use anti seize on the threads just for future ease. I would recommend this product to anyone looking for a good quality rim and tire. This has been another awesome experience with Etrailer, last project was redoing my boat trailer which was a breeze with the quality products. That project consisted of new springs, rims and tires, new U bolts, and toped it off with a set of LED submersible lights. I will definitely use this company again, not only due to the quality but the price is not bad.

Great tires have held air pressure and the trailer tows nicely behind the tow vehicle

I ordered two of these tires and got only one. UPS says it was delivered as if it were complete. I've got video from my Ring video doorbell of the UPS guy getting out of his truck with one tire and a box of TireSavers, setting it by my front door, pushing the doorbell, then getting back into his truck and driving away. I was out the door within the next minute but I couldn't catch him before he left.

I wish etrailer had included a UPS tracking number (beginning with 1Z) instead of that internal tracking number you used.

Then about an hour later, I got an email from UPS saying the order had been delivered. Well, kind of.

I called etrailer and they said the order was split up and I would receive the other tire later today but that didn't happen. Nor do I have any email proof that there were two separate shipments. It looks like I may be screwed.

I finally got a live human being at UPS to look into this and they claim I will hear from them tomorrow, as long as I stay by my phone until they do.

This has not been a pleasant experience. I gave two points for the rest of the order, which I was very happy with. But you lost three points for putting me through this today. I changed the one tire on my boat trailer already but I would have liked to have finished the whole job today so I could be done with it.

There! Aren't you glad you asked me to review my shopping experience today?

  • Recommended Spare Tire For A Karavan Boat Trailer With 13" Wheels And 5 Bolt Pattern
Though the 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern is the most common one used, it is always a good idea to double check. This is pretty quick and easy as all you need to do is measure from the center of one bolt to the center of one right next to it. If you get 2-5/8", you are good to go. If you don't let me know and I can see what I can do. With that out of the way, the Kenda Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" Galvanized Wheel # AM3S160 is a wheel commonly used as a spare for boat trailers....

  • Trailer Tire and Wheel Recommendation for a 13 Inch Tire for Small Trailer Carrying a Sailboat
A lot of times what happens with trailer tires is that the trailer is not used often so the tires sit and can get dry rot. Then, when they are used, they might blow out or wear quickly and people might think it is the construction of the tire or the brand that is no good when in reality the tires were not properly maintained. Another issue is that sometimes people use vehicle tires not rated for the capacities typically handled by trailers instead of trailer tires. This can cause the...

  • Speed Rating and Tire Pressure Recommendation On a ST175/80-13 Tire
The speed rating on all special trailer tires (ST) is 65 miles per hour. It is not recommended to run a trailer tire at a higher speed than 65 miles per hour due to the heat buildup that will occur inside the tire and cause the tire to break down and cause the tire to fail. Special trailer (ST) tires should be inflated to the maximum air pressure that is stamped on the sidewall of the tire. It will be stamped with a designation of maximum load at a maximum psi. On your 1989 Bass Tracker trailer you will need to check the side of your tire and see what load range is on your current tire. It will be either a load range C (6 ply rated) which has a maximum load of 1,360 lbs. at 50 psi. or a load range D (8 ply rated) with a maximum load of 1,610 at 65 psi. I have both of the load ranges available in the ST175/80R13 radial tire size with a 5 on 4-1/2 galvanized wheel. The Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire with 13 Inch Galvanized Wheel - 5 on...

  • Best Trailer Tire Recommendation for Size ST175/80-13
Radial tires are generally preferred over bias ply tires. A radial tire flexes more than a bias tire, giving it better ground contact, traction, stability, and tread wear. A radial tire will normally run cooler than a bias ply tire, especially when the tire is under a load. A tire that runs cooler will last longer. Best recommendation I can make would be the Lionshead tire part # LHWL101. This radial tire has a weight capacity of 1,360-lb max load at 50 psi, has a speed rating of 71...

My research indicates that Karavan used 205/65-10 tires on their 2 place snowmobile trailers, mounted on a wheel with a 5 lug on a 4-1/2 inch bolt circle. You can certainly go with a taller tire, but you'll want to retain a bare minimum of 3 inches from the top of the tire to the inside of the fender or wheel well when the trailer is loaded so the tires don't rub. For a narrower radial tire mounted on a galvanized rim with a 5 lug on 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern, I'd recommend the # AM31202...

No, the center bore measurements on all small utility trailers will not be the same. There are a number of factors that can play a role. I recommend going with the Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire part # AM3S160 or Loadstar ST185/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire part # AM3S334. I am not quite sure why the manual list 185/80-13 for the wheel and 175/80-13 for the tire to be honest but so long as you go with the size currently on the trailer there will be no issues.
