Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Absolutely perfect...dependable and have several hundred miles on them now ...and still look new

Great products and very good prices on quality tire. Quick shipment and boxed very nicely. Fit on trailer hub perfectly. Videos really helped me measure hub lugs and explain ply difference and load range differences. I have a better product which will haul more.
I will be buying a hitch and wiring for another car and the videos show me how easy it is to install. Companies around here want up to $400.00 to install. Thanks for the service will be back

The tires are perfect on my trailer. Hardly ever lose air and so trilled to have good rubber when I go across town. Really easy process on buying tires with a rim. No waiting at store installer and helped me learn to change my own tire. I tell people even lately about this business and how wonderful the experience has been. I used to have a raggedy $150.00 yard trailer someone built and neighbors would borrow until last neighbor called and told me he arrived with only the hitch clasp. Bought me a good trailer later and updated the wheels and tires and don’t worry about accidents so much when pulling a load. Thanks for helping me improve my responsibilities towards others on the road

by:

I bought these for my 2001 Starcraft pop up, that fully loaded was pushing the max load limit of the load range C tires, and I didn't have clearance for larger wheels and tires. These load range D tires are just what I needed since they have a 250 lb higher limit on each tire. I ordered these on a Saturday afternoon and they were delivered three days later.

where are these tires Kendra manufactured ?

Patrick B.

9/13/2013

They are typically either manufactured in China or Taiwan.

by:

Ride is far superior to the bias ply tires I had before.

by:

Tires were perfect for the trailer, replaced boths sides and now the trailer rolls so smooth along the drive that I hardly think I am towing a boat behind me. Gave me an extra spare tire as well.

Tommy X.

Product works as promised. Still rolling after a year with no hiccups.probably can get through two more seasons without changing the tires.

by:

I ordered these tires for my boat trailer. Have not been anywhere yet but I do a lot of fishing all over Tx.I have had several flats and I believe these tires will elimiinate some. Better load range

no flats or low tires. so far so good

I purchased this tire/wheel combo to replace my older bias-ply tires and wheels on my camper. I upgraded to these radials because I do tow my camper on the highway. So far, so good. I’ve only taken these tires out camping a few times - but the trailer is pulling great and the tires seem to be wearing fine. I’d also like to note, that I asked multiple questions to the etrailer folks before buying these. As always, etrailer responded quickly and were very helpful in my decision making. This wheel/tire combo was fairly priced, and I got them within a few days of ordering them.

by:

I purchased Loadstar 5.30 12 Bias Trailer Tire 5 on 4 1/2 Load Range C . I failed to notice that it was a Bias Ply which only has a Load Range C at 65 mph. I got back with etrailer for a refund and replace them with a 175 13 Radial that has a Load Range D at 81 mph . It was a hassle free Exchange. Of course they deducted shipping on my refund. Make sure that's the item you want it will save you on shipping cost on your return. Overall I'm very happy with the Tires and rims and they fit perfectly. Very good customer service. I received them in three days. I would recommend this company. 5

5500 miles on an extended camping trip through 7 national parks and three monuments from Missouri to California. Put a new set (4) of Kenda tires and wheels on my restored 1991 Sunlight trailer and had no problems whatsoever. Would not hesitate to recommend.

by:

Order received in a timely manner and in excellent condition. Thank you for the follow up regarding my order. I wish more companies contacted the customer after having received the products.

by:

The tires and rims package we selected,Karrier ST175/80R 13 radial tire with White spoke wheels, came in three days among other holiday gifts thanks for the prompt shipping. We found the quality amazing for the price .These rims and tires are replacing six year old rusted out and dry rotted ones.Perfect fit on our snowmobile trailer. Thanks again.

by:

These arrived quickly and look good. I ordered them mid August, 2022, and the date codes on the tires were 1422, and 3621. So one was about a year out from the manufacture date while the other was quite new.

by:

Several hundred miles after one year and the tires and rims are holding up great on rough roads and loading just below the maximum weight rating.

Ryan

10/1/2022

Another year and two cross-country trips later, tires and rims are still doing great. I keep the trailer loaded near maximum allowable weight.

by:

My order for new tires and rims and other accessories came days earlier than it was supposed to, which made me happy. I did find a damaged item,I contacted them and they were getting a replacement in the mail ASAP. I think their customer service is tops.

by:

The tires went right on without any problem, the taillights are from etrailer also.
One of the taillights was broken during shipping and they sent another one right away at no additional charge.
I will be purchasing more from them as i keep this oldie rolling.

by:

Put these radials on my 21 ft boat trailer for better ride and tire life. They arrived at my house within a few days of placing order and have improved ride. Look great too. Nice to do business with a company that delivers superior service!

by:

Tires look great. Nice to see the rims were made in the USA. Will be making our first trip with the new tires soon

by:

Put the tires/wheels on pop up camper. About 1000 miles so far, no issues, still looks good and rides smoothly. Good tires.

by:

Fast delivery, tire and package arrived without damage and correct.

by:

Just as described and we'll packaged. They came quickly and make the travel trailer tow much better. Thank you etrailer.com

Megan G. in customer service assisted me in getting the tires/wheels I needed for my fishing boat trailer. Now, in the scheme of all things important, I think we all know how critical preparedness is when speaking of fishing gear.

Imagine me with my trailer on jack stands and seeing all the other boats out on the lake hauling in their limits of salmon and lake trout. This cannot stand.

Megan followed up with phone calls and email to ensure all my transportation needs were met and did so with grace, friendly and capable service. I have purchased from etrailer before and will continue doing so. BTW, the wheels and tires are perfectly fine and were shipped in a smart cardboard overwrap and arrived right on time, if not earlier than expected. Thank you Megan and to your support team. They are on my trailer and I am rolling today.

Goin F.

They have been a disappointment. They have rusted, and I would not buy them again. I would surely buy from etrailer, but not that brand of wheels.

  • Are the ST175/80D 13 and ST175/80R 13 Tires Interchangable?
Yes, they are! The Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire with 13" White Wheel item # AM31985 will be the same size as a ST175/80D 13 tire. They are just manufactured differently. The D stands for diagonal bias construction. The R stands for radial construction.

Since speed isn't the big concern for you, I recommend the Kenda Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire with 13" White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range D # AM31985. It will have a higher ply rating which means a stronger sidewall. It has a load capacity of 1610 lbs at 65 psi. This will be a great tire combination for you that will allow you a slightly higher load capacity. Another...
