Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Ordering was easy, shipping was lightning fast and superbly packaged, and the quality appears excellent. I was taken aback by the folded-flat condition of the tires out of the box but the helpful person at the other end of the customer service line understood my concern and emailed me a description of the shipping process for bias ply tires that includes the space-saving tire “flattening.” Appreciate the responsiveness.

by:

I was pleased with shipping speed and customer service. I am going to order another tire!

Tires are still like new. Im very happy with them.

by:

The last time I purchased this tire it was to be used as a spare. Recently had a tire go bad and decided to buy a new tire to match the spare I had and put both on the trailer. Both of the tires on the trailer are now the Kenda ST175/80D13 tire. Lets see how they hold up. Good looking tire. We will see if I can give a 5 star rating after some time on the ground.

Its been a year, and they look the same as when I installed them. No visible wear, and probably 2000 miles on them. I will bump my rating up to 5 stars.

by:

Good tires run nice but horribly out of balance. Had to actually send one back as I could not pile enough wheel weights on it to get it balanced even after breaking back down and turning on rim numerous times. etrailer replaced it no problems no hassels so very happy thankyou

by:

Tires came sidewalls flattened against each other, this made it extremely difficult to install and get the beads seated on the wheels.
Other than that it's a tire, does its job.

by:

Used these to replace the worn tires on a dual axel boat trailer. Look good and tow well. Used them all last boating season with no issues.

by:

I travel 40 miles each way to get to the launch ramp and my Kenda tires have performed flawlessly. During the summer months I make this trip at least 2 to 3 times per month.

by:

4 out of 5 stars because this tire was bought as a spare. Still not mounted on the trailer but is at the ready if needed. Seams to be a quality product at a reasonable price.

by:

Quality tires arrived a day early

by:

The service that I received from etrailer was exceptional. I ordered two trailer tires on monday and they arrived on thursday.I would highly recommend this company.
Thanks etrailer

by:

I purchased wheels and Kenda tires for my ATV trailer. The tires do not have a lot of miles on them but seem to be preforming well. This was one of the easiest online purchases I have made. E Trailer has an excellent web site, ordering is easy and the delivery was made at a time that was told. Additionally, the products I ordered were actually the ones delivered. Great price, great product, great service, great overall experience.

by:

Good product for a fair price shipped in a timely manner, easy to mount. I'll be recommending etrailer and buying from them again!

by:

Awesome product, would buy it again

by:

can't really say anything about the product yet. I'm having a hard time getting my trailer tires off. the nuts are lock up on the bolts at this time. However, the tires arrived pretty much on time. really happy with the service and phone notice. Thank you again for the great service.

by:

5000 miles on a trip through Arizona and Utah with a 4,000 lb trailer. So far happy with performance.

by:

Tire came crushed

by:

Since i can not review product yet, all i can say is service and delivery was excellent. I still need to put some miles on the tires to answer to quality. I can say i am happy that the date codes on the tires was very recent as i have gotten tires that were already years old from other sources. Scott.

by:

Your customer service is superb!! I ordered my trailer tires and two days later they were in my driveway! I commend etrailer for providing quality products at a competative price with super fast delivery. Job well done!! Thank you for your continued excellent performance. This is the second time I have ordered tires from you and it won't be the last. You have exceeded my original expectations.

by:

So far, so good. One year of a dozen really short trips of 5 miles, and two 2500 miles trips. Tires still look and perform great.

by:

I was able to find the proper size tire for my small trailer and very pleased with price and shipping.

by:

Good bias ply trailer tire. Emailed a question after receipt and received very prompt explanatory response

by:

Products i ordered were what i expected. Very fast service, received in just a couple of days. The only thing was the way the wheels were packaged. They were both shipped loosely in a box and with not enough packing and 1 of the wheels has a scratch on it. It doesn't bother me much and will use etrailer again. thanks

by:

Good looking tire.....now to get the mounted & see how they ride. These are for my RTV Trailer so does not get used often. I'm sure these tires will last a long time

by:

Best replacement tires for the boat. Great tire. Reasonably priced.

by:

The tires arrived fast and we're just as expected. Thanks.

  • Availability Of ST185/80D13 Trailer Tire With 5 Lug White Wheel
I have a few options for you, but at this time we do not offer the Kenda ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire - Load Range C # AM1ST51 as a wheel and tire combination. Instead you could use the # AM1ST51 with the Dexstar Steel Mini Mod Trailer Wheel - 13" x 4-1/2" Rim - 5 on 4-1/2 - White Powder Coat # AM20253 and have a local tire shop mount them for you. We also offer the Loadstar ST185/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range D # AM3S331 which has a similar Kenda...

  • What Do the "D" and "C" Mean for Trailer Tires ST175/80D13C?
For your ST175/80D13C tires, the D means that they are diagonal internal construction more commonly referred to as bias ply tires. The cords run at a 32 degree angle versus radial tires which run at 90 degrees. The C in that location used to signify the standard bead seat, but if there is a space between the size and that C then it most likely refers to the load range rating on your tires. If you are looking to replace those tires, I recommend using radial tires for highway driving...

  • Difference Between Kenda AM1ST51 & Loadstar AM1ST76 ST175/80D13 Trailer Tires
You were right that there is very little difference between the two ST175/80D13 trailer tires you mentioned, which are the following: - Kenda ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire # AM1ST51 - Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire # AM1ST76 The only difference really is the tread, and I have added a photo for you showing the different tread patterns of both tires. The Kenda has straight grooves running along the tire, so it will be slightly better for wetter conditions; so if you live in an...

If you have the space inside your wheel hub we have the same 12x4" Dexstar wheel in a 13x4.5" size item # AM20245. These wheels are compatible with the Americana Baby Moon Center Caps Item # AM90086. • Difference in Width of Radial and Bias Tires Size ST175/80-13
The width of an ST175/80-13 tire will vary slightly from tire to tire. Some bias tires will be wider than some radials and vice versa. Generally speaking, radials will be slightly wider than a bias because of the angle of the cords. Either way the difference in width is going to be very slight. For example: Kenda Bias Tire # AM1ST51 measures 6.81 inches wide Takskmaster Provider Radial # TTWTRTM1758013C measures 6.97 inches wide Kenda Radial # AM31991 measures 7 inches wide So you...

  • Best Modern Replacement For An Old 6.50 x 13 Trailer Tire
The best size replacement we have for the old 6.50 x 13 tires on your trailer is a 175/80-13, the Karrier part # AM10199 for a radial option which is better for highway use or the Kenda part # AM1ST51 for a bias option which is better for off-road use. This new size is going to be about 0.6" larger in diameter and 0.3" larger in width. This will only translate to about .3" taller and .15" wider so you should not have any issues at all with this new size regarding clearance. The above...

I asked our resident tire expert about the # AM1ST51 and # AM1ST76 tires and what may be the difference. We pulled both tires from our warehouse and compared all of the numbers and specs. We found no difference between the two tires other than the tread design. I have attached a photo of each tire tread design you can check out. They are both Load Range C bias-ply ST175/80D13 tires. I recommend going with the less-expensive option, part # AM1ST51.

  • Will There be Issues With Trailer Tires That Have Different Sizes and Load Ranges?
When you have tires that are different sizes and load ranges, a number of issues can occur. They will be inflated to a different psi and the different sizes can cause uneven wear and a load which will not be level, possibly throwing off components of your suspension. I recommend you have tires that are each the same size, be it ST185/80D13 Load Range D or ST175/80D13 Load Range C. If you wanted to go with ST185/80D13 Load Range D, we have the Loadstar # AM1ST79, which has a singe tire...

  • How to Select the Correct Tire Size for Trailer
There are no specific tire sizes for years, makes and models of trailers. The right tire will be one that meets or exceeds your 1992 Coachmen Catalina's GVWR and also fits your wheels and in the space your Catalina has. For example, the Provider # TTWTRTM2257515D are ST225/75R15 tires that fit 15" diameter wheels, measure 28.3" in diameter when inflated and 8.8" wide and also have a load rating of D for a maximum capacity of 2,540 lbs when inflated to their max 65 psi. • Fit and Compatibility of Load Range C Tires on a 2007 Fleetwood Avalon Dual Axle Tent Trailer

These will fit 13 inch wheels with rims that measure 13" x 4-1/2", 13" x 5", and 13" x 5-1/2". Since your tent trailer has two axles, 4 of the Kenda Tires # AM1ST51 will provide 5,440lbs of capacity when inflated to the max 50 psi. This will be 840lbs over your GVWR of 4,600lbs and work great for your 2007 Fleetwood Avalon Tent Trailer. Given the choice I recommend a radial...

  • What Replacement Tires do I Need for My A78-13 Boat Trailer Tires?
The new equivalent of tire size A78-13 is 175/80-13. This is the exact same size, so there should not be any interference at all with your fenders that fit the A78-13. I went ahead and attached a FAQ article and table that shows this translation. As far as using passenger car tires, we strongly do not recommend this for a couple reasons. Firstly trailer tires have stiffer sidewalls and do a better job dealing with vertical loads when hauling. Also, since trailers do not have turning axles,...

  • Recommendation to Replace B78-13ST Tires on Boat Trailer
The B78-13ST tire size you currently have on your trailer is equivalent to an ST175/80-13 so you can make this swap without an issue using your existing wheels. Since you don't actually pull the trailer much at all and any towing you do is on rougher/off-road terrain I recommend going with a bias ply tire. A bias tire has a stiffer sidewall than a radial which just makes it the better option for this type of application. The Kenda # AM1ST51 should work perfectly as it features a maximum...

I can't safely recommend you run this bias-ply tire with radial tire on the other side of the axle though. Instead I would recommend the radial version part # AM10210. The better 175/80-13 trailer tire between a bias tire and radial really just depends on the application.
