Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Tires are excellent and rims are way nicer than I anticipated. etrailer has excellent customer service. They fixed an issue with my order, on 4th of July weekend, and had my tires to me in 5 days.

by:

I ordered 4 sets tires and rims for my enclosed sled trailer. I ordered this brand because of the Galvanized rims(originals were rusty and peeling). Also I liked the idea of ordering the tire and rim as a set. I only gave 4 stars because the galvanize on the rims is not even. You would think 2021 we could get a nice finish !!!!

They are installed on my enclosed snowmobile trailer. I only use it in the winter months. So far so good !!!

@Bernel Glad to hear that! Have fun this winter!

by:

I got the pair of galvanized rim with tires yesterday. Happy with the delivery time, however, it seems the galvanized coating bubbled up in both rims. I spoke to a rep and sent pics and the reply was “cosmetic damage”…. “Damage” is not an encouraging word, especially coming from a company representative describing the condition of a product they sent.

by:

Blew out left bearings and ruined tire sidewall, yikes! Took this opportunity to move leaf springs from underneath axle to on top gaining 3+ inches then up-size tires and wheels from 12 inch to ST175/R13 inch. tires on Galvanized wheels. Lowest strength component is 2,000 lbs. axle but on original trailer configuration much load would sit fenders down onto tires, less than 1 inch clearance. Now you can see in photos there is about 3 inches clearance with ATV loaded on. Have more ground clearance and trailer is almost bubble level after raising hitch point about 2 inches. I expect galvanized wheels to maintain good looks and functionality for many years to come. Now I gotta paint the trailer, black this time.

by:

Was looking for a decent Load Range C tire/wheel combination. This fit the bill and I like the galvanized wheels.

by:

Nice spare tire and locking brackets

by:

So far so good , ordered galvanized because they are on a snowmobile trailer in NYS , I had them spin balanced before installing, put a few hundred miles on them so far and no issues, would buy them again

by:

Great spare tire for our bay boat trailer and Aluma utility trailer. We leave it in our covered truck bed while towing either one just in case we have a flat. Keep your air pressure checked on your spare as well...!

by:

Great service first if all and actually delivered a day early!!????
Product is exactly what I ordered and looks even better!
Performance is yet to bet determined being it’s a tire & rim.

@Glenn That's great, we're happy to hear that!!

by:

Wheel and tire arrived with what looked like rubber shavings or spaghetti like rubber strings that peeled out of the bead area of the tire. The wheel itself looked like it was spray painted and it appears the paint/galvanizing was blobbed or puddled on the back side of the rim as if it was leaning at an angle and filled up in an area that collected the liquid material. Wheel wasn't balanced which I think is necessary for smooth operation.

Trailer tires are not generally balanced with wheel weights like automobile tires and wheels are balanced. Typically the tires and wheels are mounted so that the high spot on the tire is aligned with the low spot on the wheel. As for the galvanization blobbingpuddling, these wheels are dipped and drip dried because of this, it is common for for the wheels to have bubbles.

by:

I am sure the tire and wheel will function fine after these go to a tire shop to be balanced. I was a bit upset to unpack these to find that they had no weights on the rim which tells me they are not balanced. One other thing that I am not happy about is the finish on the wheel. Very sharp jagged edges around bolt holes and cutouts. They did not take pride in the finish of the wheel before the galvanizing process either which is very blotchy and far from a smooth. I am half tempted to return the product for these reasons. Will sleep on it and make decision tomorrow. Shipping was fast, and the tires are nice

I purchased two of these for my boat trailer as I recently had a tire failure on the freeway. I only needed one wheel and two tires, but wanted both wheels and tires to match. It seems the tread pattern on these is about the same across several different brands, but I've had Kenda tires on other trailers and I hope these last the same way. Like others have said, the galvanizing on these wheels are not the best. They are clearly coated well enough, but they need a better quality control. Luckily for me most of the imperfections are on the back side of the wheel and shouldn't bother my OCD too much. There was only a couple small issues on the front of the wheel that I was able to very lightly smooth out with some hand tools (-1 star due to wheel coating). Like most things from etrailer, these are still a fantastic value! I couldn't have purchased two tires at this price locally, let alone two wheels and the mounting/balance charge.

by:

Very pleased! My new wheels & tires arrived within 2 days of me placing my order (2 days earlier then they were supposed to), and they look great and I never had any issues.

by:

Purchased as a spare for a trailer. Perfect for my needs. Fast shipping too.

by:

This is a spare tire so not used yet. Holds air well.

by:

Received as described and sooner than f orecast.

by:

1996 Parker Tilt 4.5 x 9. Had 12” wheels. Put these 13” ones on. Had to gain some lift by changing leaf spring hangers. From 2 3/8 to 3 3/8. Tire went on but very close to fender, and offset a little. We cut orig fender welds, gained 2” lift on each fender side by way of 2” angle iron. See pics. Not bad for two rural Southern boys in the barn with saws, grinders, and wire feed welder. Easier to gain 4 to 5 inches lift by flipping axle and put leaf on top, But, this is a Tilt trailer. The tilted bed would be steep and tilt beam may run out of pivot space. Packaging & delivery was outstanding.

by:

Had a mismatched set of tires AND wheels on my Jet Ski trailer from previous owners, so I had to get matching! Galvanized wheels not quite as pretty as chromed, but these create a really nice look for the trailer! Very decent price, quick shipping as well. Love 'em...

by:

Still rolling

by:

The wheels look nice on my boat trailer. There were some scuffs from shipping as the supports in the box to keep the wheels separated had collapsed, but they're cheap and made to be used so they will work for me.

by:

Great product.
The glazed wheels are
the way to go in the salt states.

by:

It's a great tire and holding up well. We're going to order another one for our trailer as a spare.

by:

Fast shipping and great customer service. This product has warranties...vs others. I would have given a five star review but the galvanized finish is not smooth in some areas. This seems to be a common problem with all brands in this finish.

by:

Overall great quality tire, rims are decent. galvanized finish have some blemishes in the rim but nothing that effects the integrity of the tire and rim.

by:

Your company was well ahead of schedule. Thank you for your professional service. I will let you know how the tires perform after I put them on the trailer.

  • Can I Upgrade The 12 Wheels On My Trailer To 13 Wheels?
Upgrading wheels on a trailer is a pretty common thing to do, but you want to make sure you have the space to do so. You should have at least 3" from the top of the tire to the bottom of the fender/wheel well and then around 1.5" between the tire's sidewall and the side of the fender/wheel well. This measurement is less important than the space at the top of the tire, but is still something to keep an eye on. With that said, as the average 5.30x12 tire will have an outer diameter of 21.9"...

  • Best Option For Low 3,500 lb Axle Suspension
Thanks for the drawing, and I think we may have an option for you here, though there isn't a traditional through-axle that can work for you with those dimensions. The reason for that is for a standard 3,500 lb through-axle, the shortest you will find is 89 inches from hub face to hub face, which is quite a bit further than the 70 inch width you have so the wheels would stick way out. So instead I the Timbren Axle-Less Suspension System, which are simply bolted or welded so you do not have...

Because the size of both tires is so similar, you can certainly use the # AM31952 as a replacement. An ST185/80-13 tire will typically be slightly larger in diameter and width than an ST175/80-13 tire, but only by around 1/4 inch.
