Weight Distributing Hitch

Create a stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight-distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight-Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight-distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight-distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight-distribution system.

This is a great product! My truck almost rides smoother with my trailer hooked up then without the trailer. Installation was a piece of cake. 20 minutes after installing I saw first hand what can happen when you don't have a weight distribution hitch. As I was driving down the road pulling my travel trailer I noticed up ahead of me that there was a truck was pulling a heavy trailer coming towards me down a hill. The trailer began to sway and the truck could not handle it. The truck crossed into my lane and then back across the road going into a ditch and rolling over! Thankfully the people in the truck were okay, but the guy said he had is trailer loaded down too much and he didn't have a weight distribution hitch! As I was standing there calling 911 I looked over at my truck, and the whole setup from my trucks front bumper to the rear bumper of my 31 foot travel trailer was perfectly level. Safety first everyone! This is a great product!!

by:

It’s beautiful!!! Much nicer than expected and even better in person. Not only is it nice but super functional with safety in mind. My favorite part is that the ramp is so close to the ground so there isnt a huge step up into the trailer like most.

by:

Received the weight distribution hitch promptly when they said. Hooked up to the motor-home well & carried our truck & RZR smoothly! We are very happy with the overall service we received. Very professional, attentive to details, good follow-up, and excellent product! Would order something from E-trailer again, because the service was so good! Thank you!

by:

Great price, seems more robust than other brands. Works great, no problems. I use it to tow new travel trailers from Indiana to all over the US. Helps with "porpoising" on some trailers.

by:

Excellent SystemI have been very happy with this weight distribution system. It has performed perfectly and is built heavy duty for hauling. It is much stronger and built better than most of the systems that I looked at. A+

by:

Ok system, had to buy a longer shank for my set-up. Work fine but that's about it. After about 4k miles trying different adjustments decided to replace with a different system.
FYI, I am near the top of the TW with this.

Gotta love "Curt" products! ......great engineering, priced fair (etrailer.com).......

Great Very easy to mount and use

Easy to use and works great

Packaging this to survive the ups trip is a non winning battle. Arrived fine but the shear weight and shape of the items in the box and outer box is no match for the ups torture test

Put this on a 1997 GMC C1500 with original springs, pulling a heavy 18 ft tandem flatbed. It takes all the squat out of the rig when hauling a heavy or slightly nose heavy load. Fairly easy to put on first time and anytime, just had to extend my safety chains.

by:

I've been using WD hitches for almost 20 years. The Curt WD hitch is solid, sturdy, and simple to set up. I prefer the trunnion style and use a sway brake, also. This setup has never failed, regardless of the abuse it's subjected to.

by:

Fast shipping, great hitch, easy to install, remember to be patient when adjusting the first time. I shoulda measured for trunnion bar length before ordering. I needed the 28" not the standard 30". I've ordered from etrailer twice, and am very happy with their service. Will definitely order more in the future.

by:

I have had my equalizing hitch for about a year now, and I have been very satisfied with this product.

My hitch arrived as scheduled and in good condition. it was fairly easy to install (though I admittedly had help from my father-in-law!), and it is simple to hook up to my camper and truck.

Prior to owning this hitch, my camper/truck would sag where they connected, and would cause extra stress on my brakes, causing the discs to overheat. My rig now sits much more evenly, and I have noticed a big difference in the amount of heat that is generated by my brakes.

I am very happy with this purchase!

by:

This stabilizer hitch solved my problems towing a 31ft travel trailer. It is a well built product and etrailer provided excellent service when I purchased it.

by:

The product was received in good order and went together with the instructions. the product was put on a 2009 Yukon Denali and a 2017 24' Sportsman Travel Trailer. There are some questions about the tightening instructions of some bolts which I will call about.

by:

Relatively basic installation with correct LARGE torq wrenches for the ball . It doesn’t take long in a nice flat parking lot. I hooked this up to tow a travel trailer on a cross country move 3500miles or so with a good share of dirt roads, Made the ride smoother and safer

by:

Works great, just need to get it setup right and your good to go. Worked great to equalize the weight so I could pull this trail safely down the road

by:

I don't have anything to compare it to - bought this before we even towed for the first time, but it seems to be doing what it's supposed to do! No problems with installation or usage to report. Very pleased.

by:

Although it took five days for my order to arrive, even though I paid an extra 14.95 for two day shipping, two of the five days were weekend days. My order was intact and in perfect condition. High quality and priced right. Very satisfied with etrailer. I will buy from them again.

  • Can Weight Distribution Be Installed on Trailer with 4" x 8" I-Beam Frame
The clamp brackets that come with the Curt Trunnion Style Weight Distribution System # 17302 will only fit up to 2-3/4" wide trailer frames, and there unfortunately isn't' a system that can be used on an I-Beam trailer frame so even with a short-arm version you wouldn't be able to get it installed. Because of all this, I recommend install suspension enhancement on your tow vehicle and then looking for a sway control alternative. If your tow vehicle is the 2018 Toyota Tundra you have in...

  • Weight Distribution System and Pole-Tongue Adapter Recommendation for 9,500 lb Boat Trailer
For your application I recommend going with the Curt MV Weight Distribution (WD) # C17057 instead of the Curt # 17302 because the part you mentioned is only rated for up to 1,000 lbs tongue weight while the MV I recommended is rated for 1,000 lbs - 1,400 lbs tongue weight. Since you take into account the loaded tongue weight of the trailer with the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of your Chevy Silverado this would be a much more safe option. In my experience boat trailers tend...

  • Shank to Add Rise or Drop to Curt Weight Distribution Hitch 17302
We do have a solution for you, but you should not turn your Curt Trunnion Style Weight Distribution System # 17302 upside down (unless you were referring to the shank, which you can flip). This system comes with a shank that gives a maximum rise of 7-1/2" and maximum drop of 1/2" so what you'll need is simply a new shank that will get you level. What I recommend instead is the Curt Welded Weight Distribution Shank # C17123. For a trunnion bar system like yours, this shank will give you...

  • Which Sway Control Will Work for my Keystone Passport Trailer 5,700 pounds
The sway control that I would recommend for your Keystone Passport Travel Trailer is the Reese Trunnion Bar Strait-Line Hitch with Shank, part # RP66084, to use with your Keystone Passport Travel Trailer. The dual cam system is different than friction sway control because the dual cam system works to stop trailer sway before it starts. Part # RP66084, can also handle more weight than your trailer so it will be good to have in case you decide to buy a different trailer in the future.

  • Weight Distribution and Sway Control for a 2002 Dodge Ram 3500 and 6,800 Pound Trailer
When selecting weight distribution you will want a system that has a tongue weight capacity range that encompasses the trailer tongue weight when it is loaded and ready to tow. You will also want to add the weight of any gear loaded behind the rear axle in the tow vehicle as that will also count as tongue weight. Trailer tongue weight is usually 10 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight when it is loaded and ready to tow. For 6,800 pounds, 10 to 15 percent would be 680 to 1,020 pounds....

That's a lot of drop! But we do have the Curt weight distribution shank part # C17125 which is capable of up to 15-3/4 inches of drop that would work great for you. You'd need to use a trunnion style Curt system like with the part # 17302 so that the drop wouldn't be too much. This system will work great with 900 lb of tongue weight as well.

The Curt Trunnion Style Weight Distribution System, # 17302, will work when pulling your Keystone Outback with your 2007 Nissan Armada. Sway control is not a must have, but I recommend it to increase the reduction in trailer sway. If you plan on using friction sway control, you will need 2 controls when towing between 6,000 and 10,000 pounds. For friction sway control, I recommend 2 of # 17200. Whether there is weight in the trailer or not, you want 5 links of chain for the spring bars to hang from. You may need more or less links to get the spring bars parallel with the trailer frame. If the V-nose of your trailer covers the top of the trailer frame at that location, no worries. You can simply use a bolt on chain hanger, like part # C17005.
