How to Upgrade Weight Rating of Curt Weight Distribution Hitch from 5,000-lbs to 10,000-lbs

Question:

I have a Curt weight distribution hitch rated at 5000/500 lbs. I plan on upgrading my trailer and will need the Curt hitch #17302 for 10,000/1000 lbs. What are the parts needed to upgrade the rating without replacing the whole hitch? Thanks!

In order to select the correct higher-capacity spring bars and the other required components to upgrade your Curt Weight Distribution Hitch from a 5000-lb trailer rating to a 10,000-lb rating I will need to know the model/part number of your existing hitch. I checked with my contact at Curt to confirm that this is necessary.

The part you referenced, part # C17308, consists of a trunnion spring bar and chain.

I see that you have made purchases from etrailer but I did not see any weight distribution hitch in your order history so we'll need you to confirm the part number from your current system.

Please keep in mind that it is critical to proper performance that the system be selected based on your new trailer's fully-loaded ready-to-tow tongue weight, just as it will be when you hit the road. You also need to add to that figure the weight of anything in the rear of the tow vehicle that sits behind the rear axle, such as a loaded cooler or generator. A system rated too low will not provide the correction you're paying for; a system rated too high will results in stiff and erratic handling.

You may also want to consider a system with sway control since you'll be moving to a larger and heavier trailer. The linked article will give you good background for considering your best options.
