Replacing 1,000 lb Trunnion Bars Curt Weight Distribution System with 800 lb Bars

Question:

Recently a Curt system with 1000 lb TW trunion bars was installed by a local dealer. WIth the tow vehicle and the trailer both sitting level the ride seems pretty harsh over the local roads. I estimate the trailer tongue weight is 300 lbs and the estimated behind the axle weight in the TV will be another 300 lbs. Will a set of these bars help me with a smoother ride? The dealer only carries the 1000 lb systems, and I relied on them to install the best system.

If the Tongue Weight of your trailer when it is loaded and ready to go, plus the weight behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle is right around 600 lbs then a Curt Weight Distribution System rated at 1,000 lbs TW, like the Curt Trunnion Style Weight Distribution System # 17302, is definitely overrated. The WD System that I mentioned has a TW range of 800-1,000 lbs.

Since you will be right at the 600 lb mark I recommend going with the Replacement Trunnion Bar Kit # C17308 which is rated for 600-800 lbs TW. My contact at Curt confirmed that these Trunnion Bars will fit the current WD head that you have.
