Weight Distribution and Sway Control for a 2002 Dodge Ram 3500 and 6,800 Pound Trailer

Question:

I just purchased a 84good tt weight 6800 lbs. What size ed would b good and do I need an anti sway bar? My truck is a 2002good ram 3500 dually 4+4.? Any help would b appreciated.

When selecting weight distribution you will want a system that has a tongue weight capacity range that encompasses the trailer tongue weight when it is loaded and ready to tow. You will also want to add the weight of any gear loaded behind the rear axle in the tow vehicle as that will also count as tongue weight.

Trailer tongue weight is usually 10 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight when it is loaded and ready to tow. For 6,800 pounds, 10 to 15 percent would be 680 to 1,020 pounds.

Given this weight, I recommend a system with a tongue weight capacity range of 600 to 1,200 pounds. Sway control would be a good idea. The best sway control systems are dual-cam systems. Dual-cam is a proactive system that stops trailer sway before it starts.

I recommend the Strait-Line Weight Distribution System, # RP66084. It comes with an adjustable shank and dual-cam sway control so all you would need is a properly sized ball like # 19286 (2-5/16 inch diameter).
