Weight Distribution Diagram

Create a more stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight-distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight-Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight-distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight-distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight-distribution system.

Fastway e2 Sway Control

The two points of sway control within the e2 are created by the steel-on-steel friction that occurs when the spring bars slide within the L-brackets that are mounted on the trailer tongue. Most traditional weight-distribution systems have spring bars that are suspended by chains. Although this ensures that the system is not so rigid as to create bounce in the trailer, it also allows a good deal of side-to-side play in the system.

The direct friction that is applied to the spring bars in the e2 system helps to stop sway once it has begun. The concept is similar to the way in which an add-on friction-sway-control device functions. When each spring bar moves forward or backward, or side to side, it rubs along the bracket, creating friction. The resistance created by this action limits the movement of the spring bar, thus preventing further side-to-side movement of the trailer.

Most add-on units feature some sort of friction material similar to that used in automotive brakes. But the e2 uses direct steel-on-steel contact to create resistance. This is the same sort of friction that is used with locomotives that pull loaded railcars weighing tons. No additional materials are needed. The steel will outlast any of those other materials, providing an extremely durable, functional sway-control system.

The solution to dangerous issues. This system resolved many of my towing issues. I tow a food trailer. The hitch sagged and the lowered hitch raised the front end of my SUV. I also experienced sway and buffeting when tractor-trailers passed. Windy, wet nights and big trucks were white-knuckle drives. NO MORE.
Nobody does it better than etrailer! They answer their phone! They are truly knowledgeable about their products and care about their clients. My first call directed me to my precise options. I ordered it on-line and it arrived a day ahead of schedule. I watched their exceptional installation video three times before attempting installation. This is what sets ET apart. They did not have one video - they had two - one for a truck and one for an SUV / VAN. What was not covered in the videos was only a call away. PAY ATTENTION HERE: The rig uses a set of stacked-washers to adjust the "angle" of the hitch ball. The more washers you use - the greater the angle and the higher the tension of the torsion bar. If you begin with too many washers, you may find that after you use the provided torsion bar installer (a variant on a crow-bar) to install your torsion/control-bars. YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO GET THE BARS BACK OFF! That was my case. And if you cannot get the bars off - you cannot remove the tow vehicle. I had no idea how to release all of that pressure without potentially hurting myself. Ugh. ONE CALL - THAT'S ALL! A quick call to ET. The rep understood my problem but he also understood that mine was a dangerous issue and sought additional help internally. He came back with "...this is going to sound odd but trust me. Chock your wheels. Raise your tow vehicle from the center of the tow bar until you raise your rear wheels off of the ground and until you can move the bars manually (a light tap with a hammer is a good indicator as to whether you have relieved enough pressure by raising the tow vehicle). When you can swing the bars manually - swing them out and away from the trailer and if you swing them far enough toward the tow vehicle, they will simply fall out of their socket. (There is also a release tab you can pull out - but I prefer this method.) It WORKED!
Adjusting this type of system can be an arduous task that is well worth the effort and no company does a better job of selling, educating and servicing than ET. My local tow shop wanted to install a "chain" system without sway control and when I asked him what he thought of the "bar" systems - he said, "...hmm, I've never seen those before". Go with the experts and your own mechanical expertise. ET has your back.

A year out and still working perfectly! White knuckle drives are a thing of the past. No more sway or buffeting by passing big rigs!

I purchased a 2018 Coachman Apex Nano 17X with a max of 6,000 lb. trailer weight. I pull the trailer with a 2018 Chevy Silverado 4x4 1/2T crewcab. I did a internet search for a weight distribution with sway control when I ran across etrailer.com. Viewing the information on the Fastway e2 weight distribution w/2 point sway control I found this system to easy to install and use instead of the chain systems. I purchase the 600 lb. system, it was easy to install and its easy to use. This system does a great job distributing weight between my truck and trailer and works nicely with trailer sway. I would recommend this system over a chain system.

by:

TT and tongue weight are pretty light so weight distribution is a little overkill. However, the sway control provided by the hitch is great. Travel from Oklahoma to Colorado through TX and NM is no longer white knuckle.

This product has performed flawlessly. It just does what it was designed to do. The adjustability is very nice to fine tune the vehicle stance. Seems like the capacity of this unit was perfect for our Jeep Unlimited and 3200 lb. pop-up camper. The folks here at etrailer won’t steer ya wrong.

by: 07/23/2021

Things to know. Things noticed on first trip:

1. This unit is heavy. The hitch itself is probably 40 pounds. The swaw bars are probably 10-15 pounds each.

2. Unless you have some large wrenches and sockets, you may be getting this put together by a local shop. The hitch ball most assuredly will need to be put on by a shop or someone with a lot of heavy duty tools.
3. Taking measurements on the hitch and fender heights is easy. Making final adjustments can be a bit challenging. Just understand that adjusting the sway bar L brackets and the number of washers should come before moving the hitch up or down on the shank.
4. All but a few websites misstate what is happening with weight distribution. Weight is NOT being transferred to the front axle of the truck from the camper hitch. Weight is being reduced on the back axle of the truck, and is transferred to the tongue bars and I beams of the camper. This puts more (not all) hitch weight on the camper axle(s) and tires and less on the hitch. This, the truck resumes a level pitch. Imagine your arms are the friction bars. Hold them straight out stiff and press down on a table. Notice your body pushes up (like the hitch), and know the table is pressing harder to the ground. Your arms distribute Newton force on the table, and the Newton’s in your body are reduced. That’s weight distribution.

This is important to understand when adjusting the system. And it plays into lowering or raising the L brackets, and adding or subtracting washers. Those washers may seem small, but they make a big difference near the friction point on the L brackets. There is a Goldilocks point of perfection with the system, and you will be making adjustments to perfect. Just be patient, and watch the latest trailer video on installation. And, review Newton’s Third Law, seriously, to understand how forces (Newtons) interchange.

With regard to use, hitching is hitching. Snapping the sway bars into the locks is easy, just make sure they click in their receivers and are secure. I have to use the pry bar to raise them onto the L brackets. You’ll need some strength there, and keep your hands clear of pinch points. Taking the bars off is actually harder. I use a rubber mallet to get them off.

Drove it on hills, over narrow bridges, around dunes and curvy roads, in a stiff wind, and in heavy traffic. Best ride ever. Camper stays true in direction. Truck and camper now ride flat, only 1/4” difference on front (well within instruction guidelines), and 1/2” down on back (again, within specs). Easy to back up, in fact made backing easier because, again, the camper direction stays true. Not noisy, but it hasn’t been wet yet.

One important point: Since more weight is on the camper axle(s)!and tires, I would suggest a top of the line tire with full fiber reinforced walls, not just rubber walls. I installed GoodYear Endurance tires after a miserable blowout from a cheap Made in China tire that came with the camper. With the added weight, make sure you think the whole thing through.

After a year, perfect operation. Put 5,000 miles on the system. Florida to the UP of Michigan and return, and Florida to Big Bend National Park and return. No problems with the system whatsoever.

Easy install, toes trailer perfectly. Couldn't be happier with the product and the installation videos are spot on!

by:

So grateful to receive these pieces quickly. Was all we needed since the box came damaged and the original parts must have fallen out. etrailer handled everything quickly & pleasantly, thanks everyone!

by:

Does an excellent job at both levelling the truck, and controlling sway. Easy to install, easy to use, wouldn't tow without it!

by:

Opened up box and discovered it was missing one of the round bars. Called and was told it was out of stock and would be awhile to get one shipped. Needed for our camping trip this weekend but won't have it. Thanks.

I ordered the WDH after trying towing with just a sway bar for our Honda Pilot - Airstream Sport22. Once setup the rig now tows level and is quite a bit more stable.
The hitch is very well constructed and the directions were fairly easy to follow, I decided to flip the link plate even though the coupler was top mounted it was located at the bottom of the A -frame. Per the directions you will need to retorque the fasteners, I did this after a couple of short trips 10-25 miles. After an 825 mile trip only the angle set bolt needed a little more tightening.
One thing to note, the hitch does include a bushing for a 1" ball shaft.

The WDH is working out nicely, we have gone on 6 trips. I would recommend using it.

by:

I just received my hitch, this product as shipped was very heavy and packaging held up very well. The unit looks well made, I expect it will do the job, 3000 mile trip during the next couple months I will give it a good trial.

All set up, ready to roll. etrailer got me everything I needed hitch to brake control. Thank you your customer service was great!

by:

An excellent weight distribution hitch for our 22' 5,500 lb travel trailer. Coupled to our GMC 1500 truck, the distribution hitch prevents sway and keeps our headlamps aimed on the road at night rather than spotting owls in the trees;)

Though there is a pry tool to assist in lifting the sway bars onto their receivers, I find the process of installation and removal is greatly improved if one keeps the ball hitch latched and raising the travel trailer (using its jack) several inches to unload the sway bars. Once the bars are engaged/disengaged, the trailer can be lowered and you're on your way.

Lastly, for the good folks at etrailer, packaging of the product could be better as this arrived at my door, box torn open and bars protruding. Fortunately, all the parts of this comprehensive kit were still there!

by:

Set up this morning. 6000 lb E2. Great workmanship, no pinch when maneuvering into tight spot. Heavy built. Towing 3515 lb Starcraft 182RB, 23 ft. Gonna be around 4000 lbs loaded.

by:

Simple to assemble off line but instructions for set up on truck will tell the story

by:

I have about 3000 towing miles on the Fastway and have to say it has made all of the difference. Before I used and regular hitch with an anti-sway bar. This hitch is so much better than that setup. You can backup with it and, with the right tools make slight changes at the campsite. Never a hint of sway in wind, rain and some of the worst traveling conditions I have been in. 70mph fully loaded, no problem. I will say this hitch is very noisy. Pull into a campground late at night and you will wake people up, but its ability to pull easily outweighs that minor issue.

Eugenio

Just completed another 3500 miles of towing with the Fastway. Still works like a charm.

by:

I was given this as a recommendation from an etrailer specialist. Worked as intended, although it was a little bit of a tough install. In particular I didn’t have all the tools to know that I had properly tighten the fittings to the recommended tension. I’ll probably need to take the completed setup to a local shop to confirm and make any adjustments.

Overall the weight distribution has greatly changed the sag on the back of the vehicle. I’ll need to take on a trip before I can know if it will work with the surge brakes on my trailer.

by:

Item was suggest to me but, the etrailer salesperson never bothered to explain the I needed a thin wall 1-7/8" socket to install the hitch ball. This socket costs an extra $50 from etrailer and more from others. I had to modify my socket (which was expensive but not $50+) in order to install the ball. I feel I should have been informed of this issue before.

Hitch has been a great help with sway and bounce. Its made towing a lot more comfortable. I only wish I was told about the tight fit for the hitch ball nut access

by:

Never had a Weight Distribution/Sway bar before, so this is our first experience. We have a 20ft Winnie Drop (Winnebago) that starts to sway around 55mph. Instructions were easy to follow and everything was done in a little over an hour. The tool provided to insert the sway bars is needed and it takes someone strong to lift them into place. That was the hardest part of the installation. Our first test run around town required some adjustment, but second test run was great. We feel pleased with the product and confident that our future camping adventures are going to be safe ones.

1 year and still working amazingly! No problems towing and a smooth ride.

by:

About one year ago I ordered a Fastway e-2 sway reducing hitch. It was promptly shipped but when it arrive by UPS, the box containing the hitch was badly damaged. Apparently one on the hardware packs, and a package containing the outer links, that had been were inside the box fell out and were missing. But looking at etrailer's web site I was able to determine what parts I was missing. I contacted etrailer and told them what happened and they immediately shipped the hardware replacement kit which contained all the missing parts. I was very pleased because although it was not their fault that the parts were missing they replaced the parts at no cost to me.

The sway reducing hitch works very well. I have a pop up camper and when pulling it near the posted speed limit, when a large semi was passing, or on windy days there was quite a bit of sway. The hitch took care of almost all the sway, making the dive much easier.

by:

Great product!! Easy to use - makes towing much safer, and the redistribution of weight makes it feel like there's only a trailer half the size. Initial setup takes a little work but instructions are clear and easy to follow and are backed up by great customer support from etrailer! Thanks!

It is working great. No problems at all.

by:

Great sway control for 3500# travel trailer towed behind full-size pickup truck. Easy to install if you have the right tools. Does not come with a hitch ball, you can purchase the right size for a reasonable price that fits your trailer. The bars do creak when you are parking but I suppose I could grease them (where they attach to the trailer) but that could get messy during disassembly. I have had to tighten the bolts a few times, but that is expected after a bunch of miles of towing.

by:

I installed the Fastwaye 2600 lb. on a Chev. Colorado for a R-Pod trailer that weighs 2900 lbs unloaded. I only used one washer for minimum weight distribution. I hauled the trailer 1,500 miles back home without weight distribution and just took it on a 400 + mile trip with the new Fastway. There is a nice noticeable improvement in less trailer sway especially in cross winds and when traveling 65 mph on the freeway. The installation was straight forward and we're very please with the quality of the hitch.

by:

Great product - keeps everything evenly distributed and provides outstanding sway control. Installation took a while to get it right, but once it was adjusted properly, it is easy to hook up. Very satisfied with this product!

by:

Installation was easy provided you have access to the right tools. The hitch itself required sockets/wrenchs that are larger than most have in their tool boxes but was able to get tools and assemble fairly easy. Vehicle handles so much better with this system. Must for anyone pulling heavy trailers.

  • Difference Between Fastway Weight Distribution Systems # FA92-00-0600 and # FA94-00-0600
The difference between the two system is the spring bar design. The part # FA92-00-0600 has a square bar "trunnion" spring bar and the part # FA94-00-0600 uses round bars. Trunnions are preferred as they offer better ground clearance and are generally considered more heavy duty. Aside from that they have the same capacities.

Yes. With your trailer loaded, if the weight is 50% or more than your vehicle's weight (GVWR) then you would benefit from utilizing a weight distribution system. • 1998 25 foot Komfort Travel Weight Distribution System Recommendation
I did some research on a 1998 25 foot Komfort Travel and I believe the dry weight will be either 4,300 lbs or 4,500 lbs. Without knowing the year of your truck and the engine size I really can't give you a specific towing capacity that it might have or a hitch for it. If you are looking for a weight distribution system though we can help with that since the tongue weight of the trailer is the info needed for picking that out. For that the Fastway E2 kit part # FA94-00-0600 would be a...

  • Using Weight Distribution System on Vehicle with TSC (Trailer Sway Control)
We don't currently carry Andersen weight distribution systems so I'm not overly familiar with them, but I'm not sure why either the TSC on your Jeep or the AL-KO system on the caravan would negatively affect the system's performance. Both integrated anti-sway systems simply send power to the brakes on the Jeep or trailer when it senses sway to help quickly reduce the side-to-side movement. This shouldn't have any effect on the friction/tension that a weight distribution system uses to fight...

  • What Would Cause a Bumper Pull Trailer to Move Forward and Back On Hitch Ball
You really shouldn't be experiencing back and forth movement in the coupler of your trailer. You should make sure you have the correct size hitch ball. Or the coupler latch may need some adjustment. You can pretty easily test to see if your ball is too small or the coupler isn't latching properly by first latching the coupler onto the ball like you normally would and then use the jack to raise the tongue of the trailer. If the coupler comes right off the ball then either scenario I mentioned...

  • Fastway Weight Distribution System Recommendation for Trailer with 3,500 GVWR
The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded and ready to tow. This figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I attached a help article on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well. You will want the loaded tongue weight of your setup to fall right in the middle of the tongue weight range of the system you use. So your dry tongue weight is 356...

  • Fastway e2 Weight Distribution System Compatibility with Empty R-pod with 250 lb Tongue Weight
The Fastway e2 Weight Distribution w/ 2-Point Sway Control # FA94-00-0600 is rated for a minimum total tongue weight of 400 lbs. If your unloaded trailer only has 250 lbs, then unless you have 150 lbs behind the rear axle of your towing vehicle, it could cause too much of a rigid ride and thus possibly even create bounce. If the ride when empty is too rigid, then I recommend taking the spring bars off when empty. If it is not too rough, then I recommend utilizing the system for the sway...

  • Fastway e2 Compatibility with 2015 Nissan Xterra
The Fastway e2 Weight Distribution w/ 2-Point Sway Control # FA94-00-0600 will fit your 2015 Nissan Xterra as long as your hitch is rated for weight distribution. The 2 inch shank will fit the 2 inch receiver on any vehicle. The weight distribution systems need to be determined by your trailer's loaded tongue weight along with any cargo weight behind the rear axle of your Nissan. I've attached and article to further assist. This system does allow backing up with the system installed,...

  • Can Hardware that Holds Head of Fastway Weight Distribution System to Shank be Reused
The hardware of the Fastway e2 weight distribution systems like part # FA94-00-0600 that holds the head to the shank can be reused. You'd be totally fine to lower or raise the head on the shank and reuse the current hardware you have.
