How Does Hanger Distance From Trailer Coupler Affect Ride Quality

Question:

I have a RP6153 hitch which comes ith 800lb spring bars. I just ordered the Reese 1200 lbs spring bars because my tongue weight is about 800lbs . I notice that when setting up the hitch with the 800lb bars the hanger position from the center of the ball coupler is 20-27, mine are at 26.5. I believe the hanger position for the 1200lb bars is 27-30. I would have no interference on the frame so I could install the hangers anywhere between 27-30. I am curious what the difference would be in the quality of the ride and and or weight distribution if I set the hangers at say 27inch vs 30. Thanks

You have to consider the length of the spring bar hangers in relation to the spring bars in terms of leverage. The longer the bar setting you use the less leverage the springs bars have for weight distribution. Also, the longer the bars the more the bars can flex which means the ride would be smoother.

So the longer setting you can use would give you the smoothest ride.
