Expert Reply:

All special trailer tires regardless of size should always be inflated to the maximum psi pressure rating that is noted on the tire sidewall. It is never appropriate to under- or over-inflate a trailer tire since only when inflated to their rated pressure can tires deliver their specified weight capacity.

It sounds like your trailer may have had a different size, type or weight rating tire originally specified by the manufacturer and this could be why the trailer itself lists a recommended pressure rating of 80-psi. You want to inflate the tires to the cold psi pressure noted on their sidewalls. If you change to different tires in the future then inflate them to their specified pressure.
