At What Age Should Trailer Tires be Replaced
Question:
I have had my camper for 14 years with the original tires. There is still a lot of tread. However there are surface cracks in the side walls. How do you prevent the cracks and does that mean the tires are now bad? I use tire treatment foam on them every year. What else can I do to make them last longer and not crack?

Expert Reply:
Trailer tires really shouldn't be used after 6 years of age. The materials of the tire just breaks down to the point they become compromised and will eventually fail. In nearly every situation the treads will still be seemingly good and it's age that wears them out before the tread is gone. Tire covers to protect them from the sun like what you can see at the attached link is a great way to help keep them in good shape.
