Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

The tire is a replacement for the original manufacturer's tire on a Hallmark Trailer.
Size was as expected, worked "out of the box" if you will, used the pair as soon as they were both installed.

etrailer was helpful in recovering from an incorrect order on my part and a subsequent partial incorrect shipment on theirs. After a lot of email back-and-forth and 1 phone call with support, I was sent a second 5 x 4 1/2 that was correct for the trailer. etrailer paid for the incorrect tire returns.

Fast Shipping and processing. A full set of O.E tires on rims within a week.

Mount and go!

by:

I purchased 4 mounted tires on rims. They arrived quickly, were exactly as advertised, and worked fine. These were to replace the 4 old original tires/rims that came with my trailer. I only use the trailer a few times per year, but I tow a Kubota tractor on the highway and wanted a good quality tire. Very satisfied with every purchase from etrailer.com

by:

The tires and rims arrived in a timely fashion, no problems with installation. Really impressed with the way the tires were shipped. Hope to enjoy many miles of use with these tires!

by:

Great looking wheels and tires. etrailer delivered on time along with UPS. I will order again for my trailer needs.

by:

Product came quicker than expected. Showed up, the right tire and rim size as well! Just like it should be

by:

They arrived much sooner than expected. This makes 10 tires and rims we have purchased from you and service has been great. I liked the price on the last four better but because of inflation I understand the increase. Maybe in four more years when I need more tires the price will be back to normal.

The dump trailer is used very little but the rims still look new as well as the tires. They hold air well.

by:

Hope you don’t have to return anything to this company because their return shipping is outrageous!

by:

You guys are the best ever. My grooming trailer is lookin fresh now!

by:

Great tires, and wheels for the money. They hold air pressure great, and ware evenly.

by:

bought as spare for motorcycle trailer. fortunately haven't had to use it.

by:

Just came off the UPS TRUCK! OUT the box fully pumped up. Currently waiting on tire mount (from Amazon) to come in.

by:

This is an excellent company. I got exactly the tire and wheel I needed for a great price. The order was packed and shipped on the Saturday afternoon I placed my order. Wow!* They met or exceeded all of my expectations.

by:

Ordered on Thursday, shipped same day arrived Saturday equals great service. Have not used tire and wheel as it’s main purpose is as a spare but it looks great and of good quality

by:

Product was promised by a certain date and arrived by that date. The link to track my order was very helpful. Will definitely recommend to others.

I am from Columbus, Ohio and was happy to deal with "etrailer" for out 20ft flatbed. The trailer has been great and the purchase went very smoothly.
Will for sure consider "etrailer" in the future for another when needed.

by:

The tire with wheel appears to be of excellent quality and is exactly as advertised. I am always impressed with etrailer's explanation of their products and their exceptional customer service. I will keep coming back.

The tirewheel combo went on my homemade tear camper. They carried the camper on a 6000 miles trek across the country and back without any issues. They provided a smooth ride on-road and performed flawlessly in off-road situations. I am very pleased.

by:

Great tires and wheels! Great site to order from and fast free shipping!

by:

Arrived earlier than expected & was packaged very well.

by:

It was better than I expected! It matches my other wheels exactly and the tire is excellent. Great job, Etrailer.com!

by:

Shipping was fast, tires are perfect, and the tread is wonderful! 100% satisfied with this purchase

by:

These were the same brand of tires and wheels that were original to my utility trailer. With its 1820 lb load rating, it's a very good option for utility trailers.

The hubs are even pre-greased. The hubs are sold individually. For a compatible wheel/tire combo, use # TA53VR. The Loadstar ST205/75D15 Bias Trailer Tire that comes on the # AM3S640DX has a 5 year warranty against defects. The warranty provided on tires is going to vary from manufacturer to manufacture but belt separation would likely be covered in most cases within that time period.

  • What Does the 75D Mean in a Trailer Tire Size ST205/75D15
In a tire size the second number is the aspect ratio. The aspect ratio is the percentage of the sidewall height relative to the width of the tire. The width is the first number; in this case for # AM3S640DX the width is 205 mm. The sidewall is 75 percent of 205 mm. The D is indicating the tire is a bias ply tire as opposed to a radial tire. The difference is in the orientation of the plies or belts in the tires' construction. On a radial they run straight across the tire whereas in a...

This has a load range of C (1,820 lbs at 50 psi), has a max speed rating of 81 mph, and comes with a 5-year tire/1-year wheel limited warranty. • How to Determine 5 Lug Bolt Pattern of Trailer Wheel
To measure a 5-bolt lug pattern you measure from the center of a bolt hole straight across the center of the wheel to right between two lugs on other side. OR the way I prefer is to measure from the center of a bolt hole to the outside edge of either of the bolt holes furthest from it. This will get you the same measurement. I attached two pictures that show this as well. Since you mentione 4-1/2 inch you most likely have the very popular bolt pattern of 5 on 4-1/2 inch since this is...

  • What Does 5 on 5 And 5 on 4-1/2 Mean For Trailer Wheels
The 5 on 5 or 5 on 4-1/2 you're seeing on wheels is the bolt pattern. The first number is the amount of bolt holes and the second number indicates the spacing. When you have an even number of holes you can just measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the bolt hole across from it. When you have an odd number of bolt holes you'll have two holes across from the hole you choose as your starting point. You'll measure from the center of that starting hole to the outside edge...

Yes. The # AM3S640DX would be a good choice to replace the 7.75 x 15 tires on your 1976 Prowler trailer. This tire/wheel combo has an 1860-lbs per tire capacity, so you'll be well over the 4000-lbs GVWR of the trailer and for the 7.75 x15 tire size you mentioned, the ST205/75D15 tire is the closest modern tire size.
