7" Trailer Hitch Extender

by:

I needed my bike to clear my bumper on a front hitch and this did the trick.

This extender is hollow so I was able to use anti rattle/ lock before adding bike rack.

Perfect solution and I use it spring through fall for my bike rack.

by:

Allows me to use my back rack and small boat trailer without having to remove the spare tire on my Jeep Wrangler. Works well.

by:

Great product. Just the right size for my Jeep. I have a stock '11 Rubicon and the tire was in the way for my new Yakima Swing Daddy bike rack. This item put it just far enough out to clear the tire but not far enough to be in the way. Etrailer had quick shipping and offered pics with measurements so getting the right extension was easy.

by:

The Brophy hitch extender was well built and delivered the tongue weight I needed to carry my e-bikes. It did accept the Hollywood RV Rider bike rack. It did not however fit appropriately with my Drawtite hitch to allow the use of an anti-rattle bracket. This allowed too much movement of the bike rack.

by:

Another good experience with Etrailer. Easy site navigation and prompt delivery.
I needed this extender so my 'basket' will clear the spare tire on the back of my Wrangler.. and it does just that. The 7" gives you plenty of room. A 3" would probably be all that's necessary.
Also lets me flip up my Thule platform bike rack into the stow position.
Two thumbs up!

Two thumbs up!" />

etrailer tried their best to provide dimension on this extender, except one... the depth of the receiver end between the pin hole and where to where a hitch would stop inside the receiver. The depth is 1/4 too short for my hitch. I called and asked if there is another product that would work. But this measurement is apparently not a standard measurement, so it is unknown whether an alternative extender would work. Very disappointing.

by:

After being rear ended by an uninsured driver, I decided to beef up my OEM bumper. My factory hitch was recessed too far to put a drop hitch for my camper. etrailer .com was the only place to find a 7" extender. Best of all Made in USA. Great job of providing difficult to find products.

by:

Both hitch extenders work perfectly. Very well made. The dual hitch will help me cary a bike rack and cargo carrier on our next expedition.

etrailer.com repeat customer!! Good deals on quality products. They ship fast with great communication every time. Thank you!

by:

This is exactly the right length to be used to attach my new Let’s Go Aero - Big Black Box Pro on my new Leisure Travel Van. Seems heavy duty and exactly what I was searching for. I was sunward surprised that it did not come with a pin, but that’s not enough of an issue in my opinion to not give the quality the 5 star rating. Thanks etrailer!

by:

Was loking for an extension for my bike rack that didn't wobble....TIGHT FIT!
No play what so ever!
Thanks for the great product!

Great! No issues with my bike rack wandering back and forth!

by:

It installed and worked perfectly to get my bike rack beyond the spare at the rear of my trailer
It appears to be of excellent quality. Arrived sooner than expected. Always quality goods and service from Etrailer.

by:

Works great, especially now that I coupled it with a hitch stabilizer, as suggested by the great folks at etrailer.com. Best part of this piece is their customer service!

Its fine, and zero maintenance, so Ive forgotten all about it, which is the best part.

by:

The part is exactly what I ordered. This review is more about etrailer.com. This company has been fantastic to work with. Every order made comes with a personal email making sure everything is right and asking if I’m satisfied. They genuinely care about what they do and want the best experience possible. I highly recommend them!

by:

I needed this to attach our bike rack to the trailer hitch on my wife's SUV, which was too deep underneath for the mail part of the rack to reach without pressing against the rear bumper with potential damage. The extender works perfectly and seems well made. The Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock that I purchased also works just fine.

What is the model of the suv

Mike N.

5/13/2014

It is attached to a 2012 Lexus RX 350. The hitch on the Lexus is recessed too far under the body and the bike rack hitch did not extend far enough.

by:

I was foolish and probably lazy when I ordered a hitch extender from [another company] --- it was junk and did not fit an OEM Jeep hitch. I the one from etrailer and it fit perfectly and has held up nicely. I use it all the time and it makes attaching my cargo rack so much easier.

Peter F.

3/23/2022

I still use it all the time, not only with my rack but also with my landscape trailer. It makes connecting them so much easier. The extender started to rust so I painted it, but other than that I happy with my purchase.

by:

Perfect extension for my 2014 Jeep. Extended the right amount to be even with the outside of the spare tire. Needed this to fit my Kuat bike rack on the back without touching the spare tire.

Still use weekly, not problems.

Received product but have not installed it yet.

I use multiple tow vehicles and multiple drawbar and other hook ups. With my 3/4 ton, 4-wheel drive Chevy Suburban I have no need for this extender, regardless of whether I am towing my cargo trailer or simply hauling my bicycles with a drawbar style carrier. Although when hauling my cargo trailer and then also putting my bike rack on the back of the trailer (a typical undermount hitch specially installed) I prefer the extender to give me a little more clearance for my bikes.

The issue I have is when I put my bike rack on the back of my 2015 Acadia. The hitch on the Acadia is mounted so far underneath the the vehicle (to allow a decorative plate to be used to enhance the looks of the vehicle when not towing), the the extender is needed. I will not use the extender when towing my cargo trailer because I don't really need it and don't want halve my towing capacity.

I will also use an anti-rattle bracket to reduce sway with the hitch extender I that regard I would like to comment on the reviewers who have commented on how this extender may be slightly undersized and loose in the hitch. I cannot comment on those reviewers applications and situations but I can say I want an extender or drawbar to be a little loose. The looseness can be dealt with by installing anti-rattle brackets. What is much more difficult to deal with is finding out your snug fitting drawbar was run through water, mud, or salt on winter roads and then left to set for several months. Trying to remove a rusted in snug drawbar is not my idea of fun!

Finally, the product seems to be of high quality and is very solid. Price seemed reasonable for the quality of the product. If I had already installed and used this product, I would fully expect the rating to have been 5 stars.

by:

This item made it possible for me to use the Thule Apex bicycle rack on my 2015 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon with original equipment spare tire on tailgate.

It works with any hitch pin however I recommend item 63232 - Anti-Rattle Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock for 2" Hitches - to secure a nice tight fit without sway or rattle while driving and also for the security of preventing your bike rack (or any trailer product) from being stolen while you're out on the trail.

by:

I bought this extension for my bike carrier on my Jeep Rubicon. I had the bike carrier for a while and it cost a good chunk of money, but when I put it on the Jeep I would have to take the spare off so the carrier would fit. This extension was perfect. In addition, because my carrier has a lock on it, the Hitch Receiver lock also makes transporting the bikes and leaving them on the car a less theft prone endeavor. The service from etrailer.com was awesome.

by:

I needed a hitch extender to accommodate a bike rack on my wife's '09 Range Rover. I found a review from "Sturdy and well-made 04/12/2015" on this website. The reviewer had the same problem as me and recommended the Brophy Hitch #HE06 and the Anti-Rattle Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock #63232. I ordered both and I am glad I did. Great products!

by:

Works perfectly. I had it welded into a receiver I put on the front of my truck to carry a bike rack. By welding it into the receiver it eliminated any unnecessary rattling. I needed the extender to provide the necessary clearance for my bike rack to fold up when not in use.

by:

I needed a short extension for my front hitch so that the ball mount would clear the front bumper. This 7" extension with the ball mount I purchased is a perfect fit for my needs -- the ball doesn't extend too far in front of the grill and bumper. This enables me to leave it in place on my truck when traveling to fish (Added protection for the front of my truck when other anglers are backing trailers at the boat ramp parking area).

by:

Just attached to receiving hitch, looks like will work just fine, providing the clearance needed beyond the rear mounted spare tire

Frankie S.

5/16/2014

Working out just fine, providing plenty of clearance of the mounted rear tire

by:

Well made and sturdy. No moving parts to fail, so there also isn't much to review. We used this device to extend the hitch on our Infiniti FX35 far enough to accommodate a Kuat bike carrier without risking scratched paint from the hitch mounted carrier or the bikes. A two inch extension was really all we needed or wanted, but no one seems to make one smaller than this 7-inch device. Even so, it works exactly as it is supposed to. NOTE: It does NOT come with a hitch pin or anti-rattle device, so you will need an additional one to use this with your hitch. I recommend etrailer's #63232 LetsGoAERO Silent locking hitch pins; to remove any sway and eliminate rattle completely.

by:

I needed a 7" hitch extension for my Jeep Wrangler so that I could mount a bike rack and clear the back spare tire. I wanted one that could handle at least 200 pounds of hitch weight. This product is the right size and very rugged. It did the job. etrailer was fast and professional, and provided me with an email invoice and tracking data.

  • Trailer Hitch Extender for Spare Tire Clearance on Jeep
The shortest hitch extender we have is the Hitch Extender For 2" Trailer Hitch Receiver # HE06 which will measure 7-3/8 inches from hitch pin hole to hitch pin hole. This will also reduce the tongue weight capacity of your hitch by 50% so your cargo load will be limited. This is a common option for spare tire clearance on Jeeps and other makes with the rear mounted spare. We may have different trailer hitch options available that have more clearance depending on your Jeep's year/model....

  • Availability of Hitch Extender with 800 lb Tongue Weight Capacity
The problem with using a hitch extender is that because it moves the tongue load further rearward from the receiver opening, using an extender will LOWER the tongue weight capacity of your hitch by 50 percent. If the hitch on your truck has a 500, 600 or even a 1000 lb tongue weight capacity (check sticker on hitch), cutting that in half by using the extender will leave you with insufficient capacity to tow your travel trailer. Even if your hitch had a high enough tongue weight capacity,...

  • Do Weight Distribution Systems Regain the Lost Capacity of Using a Hitch Extender
When using a hitch extender there isn't a way to regain the lost tongue weight capacity regardless of what is used. Not even with a weight distribution system. However, there should be a higher tongue weight capacity for your vehicle when using a weight distribution system. You might check to make sure you are dividing the capacity in half and not just the non-weight distribution capacity. We do not carry any EAZ weight distribution systems, but you might look into finding a longer shank...

  • Shortest Trailer Hitch Extender for 2" Trailer Hitch
The shortest trailer hitch extender we offer for a 2" trailer hitch is the Hitch Extender For 2" Trailer Hitch Receiver part # HE06 which measures 7-3/8" long. We do not offer any trailer hitch extenders for a 2" trailer hitch that are 4" or 5" long. Please note that using a hitch extender of any length will reduce your hitch's overall capacity by 50%. If you can tell me what you are wanting to use the hitch extender for I would be glad to see if we have any other options for you.

  • How Does the Hitch Extender HE06 Affect Towing Capacities
The hitch extender part # HE06 will cut the capacity of the hitch it is used on by 50 percent. To determine the overall weight of your trailer you could take it to a weight station. To determine the tongue weight you can check out the help article I attached that covers how to do this.

  • Unable to Lower Tailgate on PIckup When Trailer with Crank Up Jack is Connected
My suggestion would be for you to try and relocate the jack on your trailer. This would be the safest, most economical, option to solve the issue of your lowered tailgate hitting the crank on the trailer jack. Using a weight distribution system puts a significant amount of force on a hitch. I would not recommend using any type of extension in your hitch. Extenders, like # HE06, create more torque on the vehicle frame, hitch, drawbar, extender and hitch ball. This added torque reduces that...

Hitch extensions like the part # HE06 will give you 6 additional inches of clearance but the downside is that they cut the capacity of the hitch they are installed in by 50 percent. 6 additional inches should give you enough clearance, but let me know if you need more.

  • Hitch Extender Recommendation for 2014 Jeep Wrangler Transporting Saris Thelma Platform Bike Rack
In order to mount the Saris Thelma 3 bike rack on your 2014 Jeep Wrangler, you need to use a hitch extender. To limit the amount of added stress on the hitch, I recommend going with the 7 Inch Hitch Extender, # HE06, because it is the shortest extender available for a 2 inch hitch but still gives you the room needed to clear the spare tire and use the folding option on the rack. Please keep in mind that using a hitch extender will reduce the tongue weight capacity of your hitch by 50 percent...

  • Will Brophy Trailer Hitch Extender, # HE06 Accept a Threaded Hitch Pin for a Bike Rack
Hitch Extender, # HE06, is hollow so it will accept the threaded hitch pin. The use of hitch extension will reduce the tongue weight capacity of your trailer hitch by 50 percent. So for example, if you have a Class III trailer hitch capable of 500 pounds tongue weight capacity, using an extension will reduce that capacity down to 250 pounds. You would need to be certain that the weight of the bike rack plus the weight of the bikes does not exceed the tongue weight capacity for your trailer...
