Unable to Lower Tailgate on PIckup When Trailer with Crank Up Jack is Connected

Question:

Im using a weight distribution shank with a weight distribution system to pull my trailer but I cant the tailgate without hitting the crank up jack on the trailer. I need 6-12inch to clear it. Can I use a hitch extension? With the weight distribution hitch will it compensate for any loss in towing/tongue weight reduction with an extension? Thanks for your help.

My suggestion would be for you to try and relocate the jack on your trailer. This would be the safest, most economical, option to solve the issue of your lowered tailgate hitting the crank on the trailer jack.

Using a weight distribution system puts a significant amount of force on a hitch. I would not recommend using any type of extension in your hitch. Extenders, like # HE06, create more torque on the vehicle frame, hitch, drawbar, extender and hitch ball. This added torque reduces that weight capacity of all of the components in the system by 50 percent. The added force on the hitch from using a weight distribution system and the reduced capacity from using an extender are not a good combination.
