Video Transcript for Curt Trailer Hitch Ball Mount Review

What's up, everybody It's AJ with etrailer.com. Today we're gonna be checking out this CURT ball mount. So it's gonna have a longer shank on it to help you with clearance, whether you have a spare tire or just the front coupler in the front of your trailer, too close to the vehicle. You can get it out there a little bit. Let's check it out. Now, when you get your ball mount, you're gonna just get the ball mount, so the ball's gonna be sold separately, and so is the pin and clip.

So make sure you pick those up on the website, as well. So you're gonna put this in your hitch. It fits two inch by two inch hitches. Then the ball is gonna go here. Now, when you're picking out your ball, make sure you look at your trailer coupler, and see which size ball it needs.

So this is gonna be a two-inch ball today. We'll put this through the hole. It's gonna be about one inch, so we know it's gonna fit in there. We'll put our lock washer and nut on the bottom. Now when you get it, you're gonna want to torque this down.

You can't tow a trailer with it loose there. But for demonstration purposes, I'm just doing a hand thread so I can show you. This is gonna be the drop position. This is a two-inch drop. You can also use it in the rise position, so that means you'll flip the ball mount over.

Now, that's not gonna work in our application today because of the spare tire. It doesn't quite clear that. There are longer ball mounts out there, too, you can look at if that's an issue you have. But as you see, you drop it in this way with the lock nut, and that on the bottom, and this would be the rise position, but not able to use it with the spare tire. In the rise position, it's gonna have three-quarter inch of a rise. So at least there's some kind of option with a ball mount if that's what you need. The ball mounts gonna be made out of a black powder coat steel, so if you're leaving it on the back of your vehicle at all times, the weather's not gonna bother it. It's not gonna rust or corrode on you. Now, it also has a trailer weight rating of 7,500 pounds. It's gonna have a tongue weight rating of 750 pounds. Now make sure you look at the other components in your setup, like the ball or the hitch. If those have lower weight ratings, go by those because you don't want to stress out your setup. That was a quick look at the CURT ball mount with the long shank on it, helping out with the clearance on the spare tire, or just keeping the trailer a little bit further away from the vehicle, as well. Well, I think that does it. Thanks for hanging out. I hope this helped.

Ball Mount 3/4" Rise or 2" Drop - 12-5/8" Long - D-26

Allows me to open the tailgate on the truck with a trailer hitched up.

by:

The one foot ball mount works great on a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado work truck(no lift kit). We use it for a one axle, lawn care/utility trailer. It is used at least half the work week and has held up for a year. It may not be a good choice for a heavier trailer, but at that point we would also purchase a 2500 truck too. The mount helps clear the jack when the tailgate is opened with about 2 inches to spare.

by:

Great product for getting out past the tire carrier on a small SUV. Customer service was wonderful with great follow through and any assistance I needed I will definitely use etrailer agin

by:

e trailer is my “go to” place for everything i need for towing my trailers
great products - excellent selection - quick delivery and excellent customer service .

by:

Ball mount is the perfect length and well made.

by:

Got the trailer back far enough to open my tailgate and working great!

by:

The extra length of this ball mount makes backing my boat into the water so much easier than a shorter ball mount. Also makes opening tailgates possible. Perfect product.

by:

Excellent quality.By being extra long,it's able to clear the bumper on my land rover which for unknown reasons has the reciever mount way too far under vehicle.

by:

Recently bought a Kubota RTV x900. The receiver is located under the bed. With the extra long ball hitch drawbar I can easily get to the drawbar and use a clevis to hitch my 5ft. wide mower or attach a ball and use the trailer. The pictures will illustrate the length of the drawbar which makes access very easy. The product is heavy duty and well made. Ordered this product on Thursday morning and it was delivered the next day, Friday afternoon. Customer service was helpful, will use etrailer again. Thanks

by:

Arrived on time and worked well

by:

The D-26 is just the right length for my 2008 Jeep Wrangler. The 32in spare tire doesn't get in the way of the hitch even with 3/4" rise. yay

by:

Great service from etrailer, fast shipping great prices, used the ball mount on my motorhome to extend it past the inset receiver so the tongue of my trailer was farther away from the bumper

by:

Exactly what I was looking for. Always high quality items and high quality service from etrailer!

by:

Good welds and high quality paint. Looks great!

by:

Good quality product that gets hitch ball/trailer coupler a few inches further away from rear bumper of new NISSAN ROGUE.

by:

The extra long ball mount was exactly what I needed for my Jeep. The added length clears my spare tire and gives me the extra turning radius I need for backing my camper into tight spots!

by:

Perfect! Gave me about 4" extra length so my trailer Jack was away from my trailer.

by:

This is exactly what we needed for our tow dolly . Going to pull our car behind or RV

by:

The ball mount does what it is designed to do. It extends out enough to clear my oversized spare tire creating room to connect my pop up trailer to my Jeep with ample distance between the coupler and my spare tire. The 3/4" rise lifts up, and levels out my trailer, which until now, lacked sufficient ground clearance, and makes it safer to tow. This inexpensive purchase saved me a few hundred dollars by not having to purchase a new bumper and tire mount to relocate my spare tire. It's a quality product, and I would recommend it to anyone experiencing similar issues.

Its still performing great!

by:

I bought this Curt Trailer Hitch Ball Mount because of its longer length. This would position my boat far enough away from the back hatch of my car, that I can open the hatch without fear of hitting my boat. It has worked exactly as I hoped, and would highly recommend this item, and etrailier. I have bought other items from etrailer and have never been disappointed in the items or customer service.

It is still working as advertised and what I had hoped for. No problems. Would recommend to anyone needing a little extra room between the back of the tow vehicle and the boattrailer.

by:

Great product and great price.

by:

We needed the extra length to open the trunk of our car when the trailer is attached. This was just enough to do the job and has been super sturdy.

by:

here are pics of ball mount I purchased installed on son's Jeep

by:

Great exactly what I ordered. Fast delivery!!
Now I can open my tailgate without hitting the jack.

Bruce L.The Curt ball mounts have worked like a charm. The extra long mounts allows my wife to turn sharp corners without jack knifing the trailer.

  • Does Going With a Longer Ball Mount Cause Trailer to Handle Differently
Going from an 8 inch long ball mount shank to a 12 inch long one like the part # D-26 won't make any noticeable changes in handling. It might be somewhat easier to back the trailer up as you basically have increased the length between the trailer axle and your vehicle axle, but it would be hardly noticeable. There will be a slight increase in leverage of the tongue weight to the hitch of your vehicle, but it wouldn't be enough to reduce the capacity of your trailer hitch.

  • Possible Solution to Help Prevent Trailer Jackknifing
It's hard to totally visualize your issue but typically a long ball mount can help to give extra clearance like the # D-26. This ball mount has a length of 12-5/8 inches.

  • Does Length of Curt Ball Mount # D-26 Reduce Capacity Of It
As long as you stay under the weight capacity of the Curt ball mount part # D-26 it's capacity would not be diminished at all. It was rated for 7,500 lbs trailer weight and 750 lbs tongue weight. The extra length does make it seem like it would be less strong but it was tested and 7,500 lbs trailer weight is perfectly safe.

  • Availability of Straight Ball Mount with Long Shank to Clear Spare Tire on Jeep Wrangler
For your Jeep Wrangler the Curt Ball Mount # D-26 should work perfectly. It features a distance of 12-5/8 inches from the center of the pin hole to the center of the ball hole and has just a 3/4 inch rise. We do not have any straight ball mounts (without a rise or drop) that feature the longer shank you're needing but the minimal rise this particular unit does provide should be offset by the slight rear sag you'll get on the Jeep when hooking up a trailer. This ball mount has a 7,500...

  • How To Choose Correct Extended Length Ball Mount for 2" Hitch
I do have plenty of fixed ball mount options with an extended length that fit a 2" trailer hitch receiver. In order to choose the correct one, you'll need to know your rise/drop requirements which can be found by measuring from the top inside edge of the trailer hitch to the ground and then subtracting the distance from the ground to the bottom of the coupler. The list below then displays all of the options with an extended length shank like the Ball Mount 3/4" Rise or 2" Drop, Extra Long...

  • Do Extended Length Ball Mounts Reduce Tongue Weight Capacity
A longer ball mount such as # D-26 will not lower your tongue weight capacity, because it's a single piece. Adding an extender introduces an additional component between the hitch and the load, which allows extra bounce and movement. Those forces, when combined with the additional distance are what can potentially damage the hitch, and explains why using extenders reduce the hitch tongue weight capacity by half. The # D-26 still retains a 7500 lb capacity. I hope that helps!

You can see in the video I've attached that the hitch does sit below the bumper and can be mounted back from the bumper if desired to give you more clearance. • Recommended Weight Distribution and Ball Mount to Tow a Travel Trailer with 2018 Wrangler Unlimited
I'll start off with the ball mount, and as someone who also has a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, a ball mount with a longer shank like the # D-26 will do the job-and honestly, in most cases unless the trailer has jack mounted close to the front of the frame a standard ball mount will work just fine. The # D-26 uses a hitch ball with a 1" diameter, so you'll want to choose a hitch ball that matches the coupler size on the trailer- if you've got a 2-5/16" coupler the # 63847 would be a good hitch...

  • Does Longer Ball Mount Shank Come with 2" Hitch Ball Already Installed
All of the longer ball mounts, like the 12-5/8" Curt # D-26 you're looking at, don't come with a hitch ball installed so you'll need to acquire it separately and install them on your own. I recommend picking up the Tow Ready 2" Hitch Ball # 63845 which comes with the mounting hardware as well. You'll need to torque the hitch ball to 250 ft-lbs for a proper install. If you don't have the means to do this you should be able to take it to a shop and they can easily torque it to those specs for you.
