Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

A good alternative to 20.5 x 8-10 tires

Very nice tires for a great price. I installed them on our little StarCraft Tent trailer, upgrading from the stock 8inch tire/wheel combination. Absolutely zero modification on this particular trailer, both on the hubs and the rear spare tire mount. Raised the stance a bit and trails better than ever. I have approx 1000 miles on them and so far no wear to speak of. A most beneficial upgrade!

by:

After looking around for a while in all local store for the right tires size for my trailer without any luck a friend send me the link to etrailer and after browsing their website for 2 minutes I found the tires I needed, I ordered them and received them within a week. Tires look exactly as shown on their website and the shipping was free ( purchase over XXX.00 I think. I highly recommend etrailer.

Just finished a harbor freight 4 x 8 trailer and turning it into a kayak trailer. Class B tires came with the trailer and I am immediately replacing them with the Kenda Class C 4.80 x 12" from etrailer.com. This gives me a higher speed tire and at least I can "feeL" safer at 65 mph or so if I have to speed a little to go around a car or on the Interstate. Very impressed with these tires and fast shipping received. Here is picture of trailer.

My Kenya tires still going strong 1 year later. I have about 3000 miles on the tires with most trips at 60-70 mph. I have repacked my wheel bearings at 1500 miles just because I like to err on the safe side. No flats, no problems - Highly recommend.

by:

I have more confidence and feel safer with the new tires (4.80-12) than the factory tires (4.80-8) installed on my 12 foot boat trailer. I feel that the trailer can be pulled at a higher speed without fear of a blow out which is necessary under certain driving conditions. Delivery of the new tires was super fast from etrailer. Thumbs up.

by:

Etrailer.com once again came through with good quality tires and rims for a better price than I could find locally. Also local stores only sell Load range B while these are Load Range C. And Free Shipping! Also Etrailer.com has a terrific website, loaded with information to help choose the correct tire/rim/accessories that will fit, no hassle. I bought these 12" tires to replace the 8" ones on a boat trailer. They look great and give me more clearance. All of my trailers use tires and rims from Etrailer. Thanks.

by:

Not much to say other than its a trailer tire and the quality is good after a year. Tire shows no visual sign of wear so far, so I am pleased with the performance so far.

by:

The products were just as described. I installed them on a small utility trailer to gain ground clearance when 4 wheeling. I ordered them last Friday and they were shipped free within hours. I received them today (Wednesday), put them on and I couldn't be happier. Perfect fit. Would highly recommend.

by:

Had these tires before and always work great. I’m a traveling veteran and camp all over the US. Have to make sure I spend my grandchildren inheritance (even if it’s small)

by:

The tire was exactly as advertised and met my needs. I have never had a negative experience dealing with eTrailer.

by:

I have only used the trailer a couple of times, but the wheel/tire assembly works great and still looks like new after a year out in the weather.

by:

I bought these tires as a major upgrade from 8" to 12" tires on my 22 year old popup and have traveled cross country and back with a very smooth ride. It required adding another 3" of clearance for the larger tires, which also gave me more ground clearance. I buy all my trailer accessories from etrailer!

by:

Outstanding! Excellent price, Same Brand wheel/Tire combo that I could by Locally, But with etrailer I got 3 for what 2 would cost me locally and I got load C instead of B. Shipping was fast, and free. I added a pic of these wheels mounted on my "work in progress" trailer. Also email updates were a nice personal touch!

by:

I just want to say that it’s just as cheap or cheaper to order these from etrailer as it is to order tires and have them mounted. And these are Kenda!

by:

Fast service, arrived a day early, good packaging, fantastic and attentive personal communication, quality product with great weight ratings. Thanks Guys!

by:

Great wheel and tire. I ordered 3 each, one for a spare.
1 box with one tire came yesterday, the other 2 came today.
I wish they would have came all at once since the tracking number was for the 1 wheel and I was not provided with the other tracking number I did not know if I was getting the whole shipment.
I used them on an old pop up trailer that I converted to haul my dirt bike

by:

Fit perfectly, and shipped really fast! Very well satisfied.

by:

I ordered two tires for a trailer, and they were here in 2 days. High quality tires with rims at an affordable price. This is why I keep coming to eTrailer for all our trailer needs.

by:

Great upgrade from my little 8" wheels on my pop up camper. Ordered on Wednesday and it was delivered on Friday.

by:

5 stars, product just as described and appears to be a good quality. Received the item guickly. Excellent price. Highly recommend .

by:

Very nice wheel and tire package. No vibration at speed and they look very nice on the trailer

by:

Rim and tire arrived within one week of ordering. Product was exactly as shown on web site and as ordered. It is installed on an older 4'X 8' open trailer of 2,000 lb capacity I use for hauling fire wood and kayaks. I have not used the trailer since installing the new wheel so cannot comment on the tire performance, but from my inspection it appears ideal for the intended use.

by:

correct merchandise with prompt deliver y.

by:

They are holding up well.
A week after
getting them I drove from Pennsylvania to Las Vegas and back with my little trailer behind me. I was glad to have gotten good new tires.

by:

Great upgrade from the old 8" wheel and tire.

by:

Very impressed with the wear thus far of this tire. Driven 1300 miles already and it still looks great. Handled up to 65 mph. No problems.

  • Does Speed Affect Tire Wear on a Trailer Tire
The speed will not have much if any effect on tire wear provided that you stay within the 65 mph the tire is rated for. The big things that effect tire wear are going to be load, alignment, and air pressure. Always make sure that trailer tires are inflated to the max psi rating as indicated on the tire for longest life and best performance. I have included a link to our tire FAQ article for you.

  • Weight and Capacity of Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire w/12 White Mod Wheel AM30620
The Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" White Wheel # AM30620 weighs approximately 18 pounds total. As far as capacity you will need to go by the lower rating which in this case is the tire rated for 990 pounds at 90 psi.

  • Using Hub Centric Rings on Trailer Wheels
A spacer or hub-centric ring is sometimes used on passenger vehicles, but our resident wheel and tire guru tells me that they aren't needed for use on trailers, due to the weight load a trailer wheel will be under. If you feel you need them, you can do a Google search on 'Hub Centric Rings' and you'll find plenty of them. If you decide to use them, I'd avoid the plastic rings and use the aluminum ones.

  • Can 4.80-12 Trailer Tires be Used in Place of 4.80-8 Trailer Tires
Basically you are correct. If the wheel attaches to the hub using lug nuts then the pilot hole of the wheel can be larger but not smaller than the hub where the wheel sits. If the wheel attaches to the hub using bolts then the pilot hole has to be exact. A 12 inch tire is going to have less revolutions so it would not take as much wear as an 8 inch tire. But 200 or so miles would not necessitate going to a larger size. So in other words you would be fine sticking with the 8 inch tires....

  • Does Pilot Diameter of Trailer Wheel Have to Be Same As Previous Trailer Wheel When Replacing Wheel
The pilot diameter of a wheel really only has to be an exact match if the wheel attaches to the hub with wheel bolts and not lug nuts. Wheel bolts indicate the wheel is hub centric so that the pilot diameter would have to be an exact match. Lug nuts indicate the wheel centers on the lug nuts so as long as the pilot diameter is large enough to fit over the hub it's totally fine. The part # AM30620 has a pilot diameter of 2.84 inches.

  • Is it Okay to Underinflate 4.8-12 Load B Tires
When tires are under-inflated, although you are not carrying a capacity load, you will still have excessive heat build up which can cause excessive wear that will in turn make your tires fail sooner than they should. Contrary to automobile tires, trailer tires should be kept inflated to the recommended psi level to receive the minimum wear out of the tires. Another downside to under-inflating the trailer tires is even though you typically carry way below the capacity rating, if you happen...

  • Do the Kenda Wheel and Tire Combos for Trailers Come Balanced
The tire and wheel combos we carry like the part # AM30620 you referenced are not machined balanced. You can have the tire and wheel combos balanced at a local tire shop if you wanted to. What our tire manufacturers will do is line up the light spot on the tire with the heavy spot on the wheel. This is a type of balancing but not like how car tires are balanced (with weights on a balancing machine).

  • What is the Recommended PSI for a Vintage Tire Size 5.60-12
A 5.60-12 tire is a vintage automotive tire size that we do not have much information about. According to my research, it looks like a load range C, or 6-ply, tire would have a recommended maximum psi of 36. I also found that the load range B (4-ply) tires were more common in that size and they had a maximum psi of 30.

  • Does Replacement Trailer Wheel Need to Have Matching Pilot Hole Diameter
It sounds like you have lug-centric wheels which is the most common setup on trailers. With this type of wheel you don't need to worry about matching the pilot hole diameter when replacing it, as the wheel is secured and centered by the lug nuts. With this in mind you can indeed use new wheels that feature a 2.80 inch pilot hole diameter. If you can tell me what size wheels you have I will be happy to make a specific recommendation. If that's what you have then you'd want the # AM30620 which matches both the tire size and wheel bolt pattern. I'd recommend verifying this by checking the tire size that's printed on the sidewall of the tire and then also determining the bolt pattern. • Compatibility of Larger Hub-Centric Wheels on 17-Foot Boat Trailer
With a hub-centric wheel the trailer load is intended to be carried by the wheel based on its pilot hole matching the hub size. If the pilot hole is larger than the hub then the trailer weight load will not be held by the wheel itself but by the coned wheel bolts which is NOT recommended. The bolts are designed to hold the wheel to the hub but not to bear the actual weight load from the trailer. In this circumstance you may find that your wheel bolts are shearing off when under load. • Will Wheels with 4 on 4 Bolt Pattern Fit 4 on 4-1/4 or 4 on 4-1/2 Hubs
If your hubs truly have a 4 on 4-1/4 or 4-1/2 bolt pattern then 4 on 4 wheels won't fit. The bolt pattern has to match. First of all make sure you're measuring correctly. Measure from the center of one hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. That gives you the measurement you need. If you have a 4 on 4 then the wheel and tire combo you were looking at, part # AM30620, works great for your trailer. If it's another measurement then we don't have any wheels that fit.

  • Does Trailer Tire Capacity Include Tongue Weight Supported by Vehicle and Not Tires
That's a really good question, but the way tires for a trailer are rated is based on the overall weight of the trailer including the weight that is pin or tongue weight. Reason being that on inclines more of the trailer's weight gets transferred to the tires so the tires need to be rated for that.

  • Correct Tire Pressure for 4.8-10-12 Load Range C Trailer Tire
The 4.8-10-12 tire should be kept fully inflated to maintain its load range capacity. If the tire sidewall states that the tires should be kept inflated to 90 psi, that's what I'd recommend. Most of the tire companies only load test at full inflation, so running anything less than that will compromise the load bearing capability of the tire to an unknown degree. • Do Trailer Wheel/Tire Setups Need to be Balanced
You should be fine as most people do not have trailer wheels and tires balanced, but if you are having a shop mount the tires, and you want to have them balanced, it probably would not cost much more to have the setup balanced as well. One reason people do not balance trailer tires is that the balance weights have a tendency to bounce off when the trailer is unloaded and being towed. The light load of the trailer can sometimes cause the trailer to bounce as it travels down the road which...
