Does Replacement Trailer Wheel Need to Have Matching Pilot Hole Diameter

Question:

Hi I have a older three place motorcycle trailer and would like to replace the wheels and tires, the old rims are very rusty. The wheels are 4 bolt with 4inch center and the pilot is just a tad smaller then 2.5 . The wheel is attached with lug nuts and studs like an automobile. I cannot locate similar replacement rims, can I use wheel with 2.80 pilot hole as these seem readily available. thanks

It sounds like you have lug-centric wheels which is the most common setup on trailers. With this type of wheel you don't need to worry about matching the pilot hole diameter when replacing it, as the wheel is secured and centered by the lug nuts. With this in mind you can indeed use new wheels that feature a 2.80 inch pilot hole diameter.

If you can tell me what size wheels you have I will be happy to make a specific recommendation. I have also attached a link that will take you to our complete selection of trailer wheels that you can look through.
