Is it Okay to Underinflate 4.8-12 Load B Tires
Question:
I have a 4foot x 8foot utility trail with 4.8-12 load B tires. I never have more than 500 pounds loaded in the trail. Is it OK to run the tires with only 35 to 40 PSI in them?

Expert Reply:
When tires are under-inflated, although you are not carrying a capacity load, you will still have excessive heat build up which can cause excessive wear that will in turn make your tires fail sooner than they should.
Contrary to automobile tires, trailer tires should be kept inflated to the recommended psi level to receive the minimum wear out of the tires. Another downside to under-inflating the trailer tires is even though you typically carry way below the capacity rating, if you happen to carry at capacity and your tires are under-inflated, you could cause damage to your trailer as well as your tires.
I have attached a FAQ article that covers tire pressure.
