Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Good deal on good tires. Old tires on my boat trailer were dry rotted. These are correct size and load rating.

by:

I got this tire for my utility trailer because my old ones dry rotted out and finally started leaking after 28 years. I first replaced the spare and then the two on the trailer.
These Kenda tires came in holding good tire and bead shape, not twisted or mangled. I was pleased with that. The went on the rims really easy. I do it by hand using motorcycle tire irons. I also replaced the valve stems. I recommend these Kenda tires.

Everything is fine tire are great no problems

Tires were ordered, shipped fast !, i have never received anything as fast as these from anyone online !. i can not say how good they are yet ?, i just mounted them on the rims by hand on 6/22/2020. not sure how some buyers complained the tires they got from etrailer were too hard to mount ?, couple 2 inch ratchet straps wrapped around them after sitting in the sun for about 15 mins, they were pretty easy. little hint when mounting tires on rims by hand: grease the lip of the rim and inside of tire, NOT ALOT !. tire will go on easy, least they do for me. i can not say how good these tires are ?, or how long they will last ?, i just installed them, and have not pulled my boat trailer anywhere yet. i can say the price was a tad high ?, but they ARE 6-ply tires !!. well worth the price if they hold up ?. mounted these on my haul right boat trailer, old tires that were installed on the trailer that came on it have been sitting a lot sense 2010, they were dry rotted, was time to buy new tires,I choose etrailer from reading reviews on fast shipping, great prices ?, so far..most are correct !. again, can not say how long these tires last ?, but if i get a couple seasons out of them ?, I'LL BE A HAPPY BOATER !..LOL. i am including some pic's of them mounted on my 14ft boat trailer. my only concern is putting 90 psi into them ?, this just seems WAY too much air pressure for a small tire ?, so i decided on just putting 80 psi in them, after all, they are 4.80x12 tires, and they wont be hauling nothing heavy other than my aluminum boat and motor, and some light gear ?, no need in putting 90 psi in them for my short road trips.

We do recommend to inflate trailer tires to their max PSI to prevent heat build up which is the leading cause of blow outs. The only brand that is designed to be used with a lower PSI per load weight is the Goodyear Brand.

by:

These tires were exactly what I needed for my trailer. They shipped in a short time and at a really good price. I would definitely recommend trailer to everyone!

by:

Bought these tires for an old 4x8 utility trailer I'm rebuilding. Shipped quick and were packaged very well. Mounted these tires by hand. Because they are bias ply and quite narrow (made for a 4" wide wheel) they were a bit tricky to seat the bead. No fault of the tire. My wheels are are a bit wider, around 4.5"-5" wide. These tires ride well even without being balanced. They were an inexpensive option for my trailer that only sees light duty and short distance use. Cheaper and better quality than I could find locally.

by:

We purchased these tires as replacements for our Harbor Freight trailer. Much better than what we had. Very happy we found these.

by:

Very narrow (where the rubber meets the road). Narrower than my previous purchases/use of 'Loadstar' and 'Carlisle' tires. More appropriate for a motorcycle

by:

Tires came smashed together ganna be difficult to put on rim now.

by:

Great tires, these are superb trailer t ires.

by:

I received my 480-12 tire with quick response after I got the tire I tried to install the tire on the rim and the tire was so out of whack irregular squinched up that I couldn't install it on the rim the girl told me from me trailer that's the way they are shipped they are folded in half I asked her if they can send me another tire that hasn't been folded in half and she says probably not if each trailer is going to provide tires like this they will no longer get my business in the future they told me to ship the tire back UPS and it's 40 Mi round trip for me to do that they provided no help at all and also they never returned my calls to help me

It really sounds like it was tough time to install the tire. When these bias ply tires are shipped they are bundled together which can cause them to seem like the are misshapped. No worries if it happens as often tire shops can mount them with no problems.

by:

Ordered three tires. Super fast shipping and the best price anywhere. Buy with confidence. Going to put my new tires on the new wheels tomorrow!

by:

I have gotten these before and they are a very good tire work well on my little trailer

by:

Excellent service and quick delivery!

by:

Great price on a good tire!

Blew one with less than 600 miles on it on a trip in the Maine woods.Piece of stone cut into it like a knife..unable to repair... Maine is tough on tires!!

by:

Seem to be fine on my light trailer. Don't vibrate and don't leak. I would buy again.

by:

Great service and exactly what i needed. Etrailer is the best to buy from.
For the tires, I have not mounted them yet so don't know the durability but by looks better quality than i had that lasted many years. They will be used on a modified Harbor Freight 4X8 trailer.

by:

Noah was very helpful with my return. He made the process very easy and was handled promptly. I placed another order a couple days later due largely in part to this transaction.

by:

Good quality produce, received in time and well packed. Ordering was easy too.

by:

So far they are holding up well. They have no dry rot cracks in them

by:

Great price. Load range c and hidden co st

by:

Happy with the tires. They are less than 6 months old so nice and fresh.

  • Can psi of 4.80-12 C Load Range Tire be Under what is on the Sidewall for Lighter Loads
You always want to have your trailer tires inflated to the max psi rating on their sidewall. If the max rating on the sidewall of your 4.80-12 is a C being 992 lbs at 88 psi, similar to the 990 lbs at 90 psi of the Kenda # AM10062, then you want to keep it filled to 88 psi. If you were to over or under inflate your tire then the load rating would become unknown and you could possibly overload it or it wouldn't do as good of a job at managing the heat from driving. Even though the tire...

  • What Does Trailer Tire Ply Rating Mean
When a tire is given a 'ply rating', it doesn't necessarily indicate the number of layers of material the tire is constructed of. As the need for greater fuel economy and the cost of materials rises, the tire manufacturers have gone to using lighter but stronger materials like Kevlar that provide the same strength that would have took several layers of materials years ago. Fewer layers also means less heat build-up, which is essential for longer tire life. All that really matters is the...

  • Recommended Replacement Tires For Utility Trailer
If the 4.80-12 tires came with your trailer, I would recommend staying with the same size. I recommend the Kenda K353 Bias Trailer Tire, part # AM10062. This is a Load Range C tire with a maximum load capacity of 990-lbs at 90 psi.

  • Availability of a Size 4.80-12 Tire with a Speed Rating Higher than 65 MPH
Typically special trailer tires are usually rated to operate at a maximum speed of 65 mph and if you exceed 65 mph, heat could build up in the tire and cause it to break down and fail. The tire I recommend for your 4.80-12 size is the Kenda # AM10062 because it was designed for excellent handling at high speeds even though the speed rating is 65 mph. The load rating is 990 pounds at 90 psi. I included a couple informative articles for you too.

  • Does a 4.80-12 Trailer Tire use a 12 Inch Wheel
Yes, a 4.80-12 trailer tire uses a 12 inch diameter wheel that is 4 inches wide. The 4.80 spec is the width of the tire. I have attached a link to all of our 12 inch x 4 inch trailer wheels for you to check out. They come with either a 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern or a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. Make sure you choose a wheel with the same bolt pattern as your trailer hub or as your previous wheels. I have also attached a help article on how to determine your bolt pattern for you to check out.

  • Recommended Pressure to Inflate Trailer Tires for Trip
Special trailer tires, like the existing Carlisle tires on your trailer, should always be inflated to their maximum air pressure. The maximum psi of 90 that you mentioned should always be maintained, regardless of the load on your trailer or the distance that you will be traveling. This will ensure that the tires can hold its listed load capacity while performing at their best. If a trailer tire is inflated to a lower air pressure than the maximum, the amount of weight the tire can carry...

  • What is the Air Pressure Rating for a 4.80-12 Load Range C Trailer Tire
Trailer tires should always be inflated to the maximum psi indicated on the tire. For a 4.80-12 load range C such as # AM10062, it should be inflated to 90 psi. The reason you inflate trailer tires to the maximum psi is because trailer tires are constructed with a thicker sidewall to handle more vertical load compared to passenger vehicle tires. If under inflated the thicker sidewall will lead to excessive heat build up and tire failure. I have included a link to our help article on trailer...

  • New 4.80-12 Spare Trailer Tire is 1/2 Inch Taller than Other 4.80-12 Tires
Any given 2 tires of the same size are going to be slightly different in width in diameter. The 1/2 inch difference is not going to be an issue if used as a spare. It would only be over the long term that you might run into issues. So yes, as a spare, you are good to go.

  • Does # AM10062 Kenda Trailer Tire Fit 4 Inch Wide Wheel
Yes, Kenda special trailer tire part # AM10062, which you referenced, fits 12" x 4" rims. The tire size is 4.80 x 12 with a section width of 4.9 inches. This tire is designed for excellent handling at high speeds. The tire has a load range of C with a 6-ply rating. I have included a demonstration video of this special trailer tire for you to check out.

  • What PSI Should Kenda Tire AM10062 be Inflated to
I checked your order notes and it looks like you bought the tire part # AM10062 which has a 90 psi capacity. With trailer tires you always have to run them at their max pressure so that you ensure you get the full capacity which also prevents the tire from flexing too much and causing excess heat build up.

  • Should Jet Ski Trailer Tires be Inflated to Max Tire Pressure
Trailer tires need to be inflated to their max psi rating listed on the sidewall when cold to ensure you get the full weight capacity of the tire as well as prevent heat build up due to excessive side wall flex. So in your situation inflate the tires to 60 psi when cold and also be sure to stay under the speed rating of the tire as well. Don't worry about the psi increasing as they heat up as that's normal and accounted for when determining the capacity.

  • Is it Possible Same Size Trailer Tire Replacement is Larger than Old Tire

  • Trailer Tire Wear on the Outsides of the Tire Tread
Wear on the outside of a trailer tire is an indication that the weight on the trailer is not significant enough to straighten out the axle when under load. Most trailer axles have a bow in them that points up in the middle. When enough weight is placed on the axle it will straighten out. Otherwise the tires will tilt in at the bottoms. This is likely what is going on. The other possibility is that there is something wrong or worn out with the suspension. Check the suspension for worn out...

  • Will Adding Higher Capacity Trailer Tires Allow Me to Carry More Weight on a Trailer
You have to go by the capacity of the axle even if the wheels and tires are rated for more weight. The opposite is also true, if the wheels are rated lower than the axle you have to go by their capacity. You always have to go by the lowest rated component in the system. To be able to carry more weight you would have to replace the axle and use wheels and tires rated the same as the new axle. The highest capacity 4.80-12 tire we carry is a load range C that has a max capacity of 990 pounds,...

  • Recommended Tires For Malone Microsport With Two Fishing Kayaks
Trailer tires should always be inflated to their max capacity. This helps with load carrying capability but also for heat dissipation and wear. With your tires at 60 lbs, you will have your tires getting too hot and wear too fast as well as decreased traction even with more road contact. My recommendation is to go back to your 4.8-12 tires because you don't need the additional width. The load range isn't the issue, but you won't have any issue with that either for this application....

  • Do Bias Ply Trailer Wheel/Tires Need to be Balanced more than Radials
Actually trailer tires don't normally get balanced so typically it's not an issue but in general radial tires are better overall so if you were considering a radial I would recommend that highly. Trailer tires and wheels are marked where the heavy and light points are so what the people who mount them will do is line those up properly and you get a balanced enough setup. In general people who go ahead and balance trailer tires don't notice a difference. The main difference between a radial...

Trailer tires rarely last much longer than about 6 years and that is the oldest we recommend a tire be before it is replaced. If you got 18 years of service from a set of car tires (!!!) you got lucky, but it surely is time for new ones, and they need to be special trailer tires. The number of plies in a tire does not matter like it used to. The 5.30-12 is designed for 4-1/4 inch wheels, whereas the 4.80-12 is intended for 4 inch wide wheels. So as far as your wheel goes a 5.30-12 would be better for you.
