Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Beveled Stud Holes

Beveled Stud Holes Front and Back

The stud holes on this steel wheel are beveled to ensure that the wheel stays tight against your trailer hub. This also eliminates the need to constantly retorque the lug nuts.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

After purchasing, and installation of the 2 Kenda 5.30-12 Tire W/12 White Wheels, 2 perfect fits, for my 1998 Tracker Trail Star boat trailer.I purchased these tires for my boat trailer because the tires on the trailer had small cracks due to the sun exposure. The boat is 16’2’’, and has a combined weight of about 1,380 lbs. The tires were very easy to mount, the ride while traveling on the interstate to the lake was smooth, and the handling on the boat trailer felt well secure at a high speed of 70mph. Overall I am very pleased with these tires. I also purchased two tire cover to put over the new tires, to preserve them from this Hot Atlanta, GA. sun.

Tire and wheel are doing fine after a year.

Kenda Loadstar 5.30-12 Bias tire,LR C, with White Rim: Tires arrived in excellent boxes, on time. I was excited to see the tires were in good shape upon arrival. I cleaned them up, applied 303 on the whole rim and tire. An excellent choice of tire for my fishing trlr. These tire are a high speed tire, wider than the 4.80 tire and will wear very good in the desert heat. I ordered 3 tires, I won't have to worry about a flat for years to come. This is my second time I purchased tires from e-trailer, they have a vast line of products with good prices ,thanks e-trailer, I will return again.

by:

These arrived earlier than I expected and it was great. They arrived in a box in great condition. I am using them on my Harbor Freight utility trailer and they are a good match for the old ones.

by:

These tires work as expected and are a great fit for my 2000# GVWR utility trailer.

Huh, that quality does not look good at all. Let me get you over to our customer service department for them to look into a replacement for you.

by:

Needed both new tires and wheels. These came already mounted, and slightly pressurized. Was told that balancing was not needed. Easily put on trailer and drove nice. No problems noted.
Ordering was easy. Questions were quickly answered by customer service. Shipping was quick. Good company!

Have had tires and wheels on for one year. Holding pressure and rolling fine. No problems.

by:

I trailer my boat on gravel roads in northern Minnesota to my favorite fishing lakes. After one year of usage these tires are still holding up to the difficult terrain. In the past with other tire brands, I would typically have to start plugging holes in the tires or replace them by mid-summer but I haven’t had any issues with these yet.

So, after one year, I’m very pleased with these after previously trying trailer tires from at least three other tire manufacturers.

by:

Product seems to be good. trailer had the same tires from 2007 on it when I got it and were still holding air but in bad shape due to age. Rims are nice and the old ones are still in good shape.

by:

I have had use of one of the two tires I purchased at the same time since then and it is working perfectly. The rim is a little rusty but solid otherwise. It was worth the price as I shopped around for several days for them and the best price with shipping. Thank you!

Excellent. Has been in use over a year. Bought with rim. Durable for my 5x8 trailer and loads over 1,599 lbs at times.

by:

The Kenda Loadstar 5.30-12 wheel & tires were an upgrade (from 4.80-12, load range B) for my Zieman 3-motorcycle trailer. They came ready to be installed and bolted right up! Also, etrailer.com was easy to order from and provided delivery tracking.

by:

Delivery was fast and the tire rim was exactley what I needed. After a year the tires and rims have held up as expected

by:

I must say, etrailer has the Best website and service I have ever had online. Even though I had chosen 1 incorrect tire of 2 different types, they helped me to get the wrong tire returned and quickly arranged for the right one to come. I am amazed by this kind of good service in a day when it's very rare. Much Thanks to Shery T. and George J. and the whole etrailer team. We Islanders would say in our local Hawaiian pidgin language---"etrailer.com is-- Da Best!" Aloha and Mahalo from your #1 customer here in Honolulu Hawaii.

by:

Fast Free 3 day shipping! Tires were packaged well, clean, scratch free, and the tire pressure was perfect. They look great on my jet boat trailer. I am very happy with my purchase and highly recommend buying your tires from e-trailer.

by:

I needed new tires for my 13 yr old 5'x8' utility trailer. ETrailer had the right product (for some reason 5.30-12s are not that common in my area) and a good price which created the highest value from the various sources I found on the web and locally.

I was very pleasantly surprised how well everything came packed.

Very good experience.

  • When Should Air Pressure Be Checked On The Kenda Loadstar 5.30-12 Trailer Tire with 12" White Wheel?
The air pressure should be taken with the tires on the ground and the load of the trailer on the tire. This is similar to how you check the tire pressure in your car when the tires are cold before driving. For the Kenda Loadstar 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" White Wheel # AM30820 they should be filled to 80psi cold. The 1/2" wheel studs for this wheel should be torqued to 90-120ft-lbs.

As long as the 45 MPH speed rating on your 5' x 8' utility trailer is due to the tires I recommend replacing your current 5.3-12 tires with the Taskmaster 5.30R12 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range C # TT53012C which have a load rating of 1050lbs per tire so they will have plenty of load rating for your 1750lb load. The # TT53012C also has a speed rating of 81 MPH so you will be fine towing at 65-70 MPH. I included a video of the # TT53012C for you to take a look at.

  • Will 5.30-12 Trailer Tires Fit In Place of 155/80-12 Trailer Tires on a Tent Trailer
A 155/80-12 is definitely not a common trailer tire sized, though it may have been at one time. It sounds more like a car tire size which should not be used on a trailer. The trailer tongue or frame should have a sticker or plate that indicates the size it requires. If it does say 155/80-12 you will need to go with the closest match since that since is no longer available. The 5.30-12 tires are going to be very, very close. They will be only 1/2 inch more narrower and 0.2 inches taller...

In the 10 inch wheel size the 20.5x8.0-10 that you have is the tallest size overall at 20.5 inch. If you wanted to bump up to a 21.9 inch overall diameter tire you could go to a 5.30-12 tire with something like the # AM30790 if you have a 4 bolt pattern or # AM30820 if you have a 5 bolt. This would be a narrower tire as well so there wouldn't be any risk of clearance issues with the trailer frame.

There are two different types of trailer hubs that will determine if the pilot hole on a wheel matters or not. First there are hubs that use wheel bolts to secure the wheel to the hub. These are called lug-centric. The pilot hole can be larger but obviously not smaller because it wouldn't...
