Determining Your Load Capacity

A common ratio for determining your winch load capacity is 2:1. For example, a 2,000-lb boat would require a 1,100-lb winch. There are extenuating factors, however, that will determine the appropriate winch size for your purposes.

The ratio can be stretched to 3:1 in instances when the trailer in use has high-quality rollers and is most commonly used on ramps where boats float most of the way onto the trailer.

In contrast, using a boat trailer that has wooden bunks, lacks self-alignment capabilities, and is most commonly used on ramps where the boat must be winched most of the way onto the trailer reduces the ratio to 1:1.

Note that pontoon trailers and other special designs require special consideration when determining winch capacity.

Determining Your Rolling Load Capacity

drawing

To calculate your winch's rolling load capacity - the amount of weight it can pull up an incline - you must multiply the winch capacity by a factor determined by the degree of the incline.

The multiplication factor shown includes a 10 percent rolling friction factor. Note: A 5 percent - or 3 degree - incline is a 1/2' rise in 10'. Follow the chart to determine your winch's rolling load capacity.

Shopped around a lot before I bought this. My boat is heavy (7500 lb) and the wench I had struggled. I took a chance on this as it was rated for the weight. I used the Anderson style connectors and installed a breaker near the battery. Pulled new wire rated for the amp draw. I couldnt be happier! This thing is a beast! Has no prob pulling my boat and cant see that it struggles at all. Highly reccomend. Photo is during installation. I put a cover over it due to my anchor comes close when launching and didnt want it to hit.

by:

They were exceptionally helpful in deciding which winch to buy. I got this for my pontoon boat on a slide bumper trailer. I wanted to make sure it would have enough power to pull my 24 ft pontoon. This winch is honestly one of the best purchases I have made for this boat. It easily pulls my boat up onto the trailer. Total time to load about 2 mins. I have had many envious looks at my electric winch. Thank you again. For the help in deciding which one to get.

by:

works perfectly.....great product and r eputation!

by:

The winch works as advertised. My boat with gear and fuel weighs in around 6500 lbs. My trailer has rollers so that does make it easier. It hauls it up ok until maybe the last 6 inches where it slows down a bit. One improvement I would make would be to have a better emergencey handle. It is quite small and if I ever had to use it I would imagine it would take forever and not sure I could generate enough leverage to pull the boat all the way onto the trailer.

by:

Yes I finished the winch installation, I have not tried at the boat ramp,
however I ran the winch and am very pleased. I am also pleased at the way your company does business. Thank you. George you asked for pictures, please find enclosed pictures.

Works great

by:

The winch appears to be good and everything it was advertised to be. However there are two problems with the wiring harness.

1. The bracket with the attached fuses is not designed to connect to a side terminal type battery. Actually I’m not sure how it would connect to an upper post battery unless there were secondary posts with wing nuts like found on a marine battery.
2. The positive side of the wiring harness is 25’ but the negative side is only 5’. If you ground the harness to your truck frame you may not be able to reach to the winch especially since the 9000 winch is for a larger boat which means the trailer yoke and support post might be further back.

I had this problem. I purchase some of the quick release adapters and made a five foot pigtail.

Very good handles my 22 foot fiberglass boat without any problem

Very good still working well

by:

I have mounted the winch on my trailer. It was fairly easy. I had drill out 3/8 in. holes to 1/2 in., but alignment was already ok. I'm concerned about the 8 ft. ground cable. I'm thinking about putting a bolt through my truck bumper, putting a bolt through and clipping the ground to it.

by:

Works great. I use it on a 19 foot Lund Impact and a roller trailer without a problem. I recommend this product.

Great on a boat trailer. Makes loading a breeze. A wireless remote would make this winch even better. Currently in use with a 19 foot Lund boat on a Shorelander roller trailer.

by:

Winch was delivered 3 days after being ordered. I have used Etrailer over the past 6 years and had no issues with ordering, shiping, and their products. My source for all my boating/trailering needs.

by:

Etrailer had all the parts I was looking for in stock. The sales help was very good and the shipping was very quick. I shop here as often as I can

by:

It pulls my boat onto the trailer with ease and it always worked. The big thing for me is how long will it last. If it works as well in 5 or 10 years I'll give it five stars.

by:

I will write a review when I use it

by:

I RECEIVED ORDER YESTSERDAY. PLAN TO INSTALL WINCH AND BEARINGS TOMORROW . PRODUCTS LOOKS GOOD. TIME WILL TELL. THANKS FOR PROMPT SSERVICE.

by:

Very quick service, fair price and just as described.

So far so good used @ 10 times and no problems pulling my 8000 lb. fish boat. The provided wire harness had to be lengthened to function but who cares the winch works great and a strap winch is the ONLY way to go with a boat of this weight.

The freewheel option allows the cable to be removed by hand. You will have to make sure that it is in the correct position to use the free wheel. If you have tried to manually adjust it and it is still not functioning properly, this item has a 2-year warranty.

by:

decent price, in stock, great communications & quick shipping.

by:

Very good product. Pulled my jet ski up on the lift like it was nothing.

by:

they are great to deal with and will buy again

Exactly what I needed

it's a good product

Looks very well built, haven't had a chance to mount it yet! Will update review after use!

  • Recommended Electric Winch for 7,000 Pound Boat Trailer
In general if your trailer is equipped with rollers and you don't have too long of a winching distance, a winch rated for 1/3 of the boat weight can be used (3:1 ratio) without issue. With this in mind I recommend looking at the Dutton-Lainson StrongArm Electric Winch # DL25215 for your boat that will weigh around 7,000 pounds fully loaded. This is an excellent electric winch that can handle up to a 9,000 pound boat when used with the rollers on your trailer. It has a Load/Unload power...

  • Can DL Powered Winch # DL25215 be Used for 24 Foot Long Pontoon Boat
Electric winches like the Powered Winch # DL25215 take all of the work out of winching in a boat at a boat ramp. Basically you just have to connect the strap and press a button and you're good. This would have more than enough capacity for a 24 foot long pontoon as well. Since this winch will pull up to 70 amps you'll need to install a deep cell battery on your trailer as your trailer wiring connector power source will not be strong enough.

  • Need A Winch For Pulling A Vehicle Onto A Car Trailer
The Dutton-Lainson StrongArm Electric Winch - 9,000 lbs # DL25215 is an electric winch that is designed for loading and unloading of boats, personal watercraft, and vehicles. This winch has a 3,000 lb. load capacity. The boat size-to-winch capacity ratio is 3 to 1, which is used to determine what size boat that the winch can pull. This means that it is designed for boats up to 9,000 lbs. It can be used for car trailers. When you are pulling a load on wheels, like a car onto a trailer,...

  • Can Portable Power Source Be Used to Power Dutton-Lainson StrongArm Electric Winch DL25215
A winch can be powered with any suitable 12V source so long as that source can deliver steady voltage and the current required by the particular winch for the particular load it is pulling. Current demand from a winch will vary depending on the winch itself and the load. The Dutton-Lainson StrongArm Electric Winch # DL25215 has plenty of capacity for your 4700-lb boat and it will draw at full load about 70-amps. The included 8-gauge wiring harness is 25-feet long and can support the winch's...

  • Determining Boat Capacity of Dutton-Lainson StrongArm Electric Winch # DL25215
The 4,800 pound break strength strap that was included with your Dutton-Lainson StrongArm Electric Winch # DL25215 actually should not need to be replaced. The included strap, like the winch itself, features a working load capacity of 3,000 pounds but can handle a boat of up to 9,000 pounds. If your trailer is equipped with high-quality rollers and is typically used on ramps where the boat will essentially float most of the way onto the trailer, a 3:1 ratio can be used for winches. • Electric Boat Winch to Use with 5,000 lb Boat
The Dutton Lainson Strongarm winch part # DL25215 would be a great option to be used with your boat that weighs 5,000 lbs. In general when picking out a winch for a boat trailer you need to go with a winch with at least half the weight capacity of the boat so a 3,000 lb winch with a 5,000 lb boat would work really well and have more than enough capacity. This has a strap like you are wanting as well.

  • Can Dutton-Lainson Electric Trailer Winch be Used with a 6,500 Pound Boat
As long as the winch is rated high enough to for your application it is safe to use. With that being said, if it's over rated that can improve the performance and longevity of the winch itself. For example, if you're always running it at its maximum capacity it won't last as long as a higher rated winch being used at 75 percent of its max capacity. The Dutton-Lainson # DL25215 is rated to pull a 9,000 pound boat onto a trailer

  • Is There a Ratchet Handle Winch for Sea Ray 27 Boat
In order to choose the correct winch for your trailer you'll need to know the weight of the boat. We typically recommend a 2:1 ratio meaning the winch needs to be rated for at least half the weight of the boat. I do have some options for you but I don't think we have a winch in the size you need with a ratchet handle attachment. I looked up some Sea Ray 27's online and they appear to be in the 5,500-6,000 lb mark therefore we'd need around a 2,750-3,000 lb winch capacity. I recommend Dutton-Lainson...

The Dutton-Lanison StrongArm Electric Winch # DL25215 is a great replacement for your current PowerWinch 912 as they have similar ratings, the StrongArm 9,000 is rated to pull up to a 9,000 pound boat, while the PowerWinch 912 is rated for up to a 9,500 pound boat. Additionally, the StrongArm 9000, with a full load will pull 6.3 feet per minute, making it take about 3 minutes to reel the entire reel.

  • Winch Recommendation for Trailer that Weighs 11,000 lbs
Generally when picking out a winch for a boat trailer the ratio is 2 to 1 meaning you would need a winch with roughly half the capacity as the weight of the boat. With good rollers and a short winching distance the ratio increases to 3 to 1, but with long winching distances and wooden bunks like what you currently have the ratio is 1 to 1. With the Dutton-Lainson StrongArm Electric Winch # DL25215 it has a load capacity of 3,000lbs. If you are pulling the pontoon onto your trailer with the bunk boards the capacity is 6,000lbs. If your trailer had rollers or as in your situation the bunk boards are submerged under water it increases capacity to 9,000lbs.
