Understanding Weight Capacity For Dutton-Lainson StrongArm Electric Winch With 4,500LB Pontoon

Question:

I am looking for a winch for a 24ft pontoon that weights approximately 4500lbs loaded. This boat loads on a bunker trailer that is only half submerged in water. It is backed all the way in to get the bunkers wet then pulled out so the boat self levels in the bunkers. I want to make sure I get enough power to winch it in. I have been researching and I found the 9000lb winch by Dutton. I am finding it hard to wrap my head around the numbers for ratios. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

Helpful Expert Reply:

With the Dutton-Lainson StrongArm Electric Winch # DL25215 it has a load capacity of 3,000lbs. If you are pulling the pontoon onto your trailer with the bunk boards the capacity is 6,000lbs. If your trailer had rollers or as in your situation the bunk boards are submerged under water it increases capacity to 9,000lbs. The reason you see these increases is the entire weight of the boat is not being drug across the bunk boards or they will not require the full force due to the smoother rollers or sliding on the smoother bunk boards.
