I bought this winch to mount in an enclosed trailer for vehicle recovery. I didnt want an electric winch because I knew it would not be used frequently and didnt want to deal with a battery. I was skeptical about the pullung power it would provide. In use however, I was able to drag with ease, a 2500 pound vehicle into the trailer with one of the vehicles wheels locked up. In low gear the winch is slow, but dang it will pull.

So that the winch could be removed easily, I mounted it to a skid that is anchored to the front two tie downs in my trailer. This way when not needed it can be stored in the front of the trailer, or removed entirely. The best part, no batteries. Also, nothing to go bad from sitting idle for a while.

I tried to write a review on your link below, but no luck tonight. We have completed our ATV/Tractor log arch (pictures attached) of which included the Dutton-Laison Hand Winch (DL14881) and the 7/32" x 50' Fulton Galvanized Winch Cable(FWC7500100). I purchased both items from etrailer, and together they work to easily drag and then load up 14" to 22" white pine logs into the log arch. While most logs are 8' long, the winch will easily handle a 16' log. The winches hand brake works very well in tandem with the down mode of the winch handle, when lowering a heavy log back onto the ground. Both of these items met and exceeded my expectations for both quality and price point, plus another bonus is the winch is made in the USA. I am very happy to say that you and etrailer have made our log arch project a big success!

Works Great
Cranks my 25’ boat right
up onto the trailer.

I use this winch on a 20' inboard/outboard crestliner, cutty cabin boat. The loaded boat weighs approximately 5500 lbs. I use a roller
Trailer. The winch works perfect! I'm 81 years old & I can crank the boat in with one hand! It's the best winch I have ever used. Truely
a fine piece of equipment!

by:

I have not used the winch yet, but bought it to replace a Fulton 3700. The new winch is built much better than the Fulton winch. The gear switch is a plunger style that goes up and down when you crank the handle. Seems to be more sturdy, than the flip handle that the Fulton has. This product is made in America and it shows. The Fulton is not made in America and you can tell. I am very impressed with the owners manual that covers every aspect of installing and using the winch safely. I suggest viewing the video on this site and you will see what an impressive winch they make.

All is good, thank you!

by:

Excellent winch. I use it with a flexible cable for my dock on the river. It's very strong and I'm very pleased with it.

by:

So far the winch worked as advertised - didn't use it very heavily but seems to be a solid peace of equipment - My trailer is parked outside, so I covered the winch for not getting rained on.

by:

The winch is heavy and feels of good quality. The ratchet has a very solid and crisp sound to it so I am anxious to spool the wire rope on it and use it soon. I am devising a 40" handle extension so I can crank it while standing at the side of the trailer.

by:

Great winch, using on car hauler trailer for items and pulling cars onto bed. Very heavy duty with nice attachment points.

by:

This product is great. I use it to load a #5800 boat.I recommend buying the cable that goes with it. You can order replacement parts of needed.

by:

Everything always comes through on time, and the people who work there are always knowledgeable and understand my needs thank you

  • Cable Recommendation for Dutton Lainson Winch DL14881 that is Thicker in Diameter than 1/4 inch
You could use the 3/16 inch diameter cable part # FWC3250100 with the Winch part # DL14881 as this cable is a 3/16 inch cable with a capacity of 4,200 lbs.

  • How Do I Select a Hand Winch for My 8,000 pound Boat Trailer
Finding the right capacity winch for your boat trailer is fairly simple but you have factors that must be taken into consideration. Boat-size-to-winch capacity is generally 2 to 1. With good rollers and short winching distances, you could increase the ratio to 3 to 1. With wooden bunks and long winching distances, reduce the ratio to 1 to 1. Special consideration should be given to pontoon boats and other boats with special hull designs. By my calculations the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch...

  • How to Select Hand Winch for Boat Trailer
The Dutton-Lainson 2 Speed Direct Drive Hand Winch # DL14881 is designed only for use with a wire rope like 1/4-inch x 50-foot # DL24104 or a flat strap, according to my contact. Dutton-Lainson does NOT recommend using synthetic rope with this winch because those tend to stretch and contract so much that they can reduce the winch capacity. You may want to have a look at the linked article on winches and how to determine the capacity you need. Incline angle, winching distance and the nature...

The Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch - TUFFPLATE Finish - 2 Speed - Direct Drive - 3,500 lbs # DL14881 is my recommendation for your boat lift. It has the capacity to lift without issue, has the braking ability to control the release speed, and it is corrosion resistant. It comes with a 5 year manufacturer warranty.

  • Comparing Dutton-Lainson Single Speed and Two Speed with Hand Brake Winches
The main differences between the Dutton-Lainson winches you referenced is that # DL14881 has a hand brake, a drum hub diameter of 1-5/16 inches, and two speeds. The # DL24844 winch is a single speed and has a drum hub diameter of 3-1/8 inches. Because of the lower gear ratios # DL14881 offers, the load would be able to be drawn in quicker than with the gear ratio of # DL24844. The two speed winch would allow you to be able to change the gear ratio for loads of different weights. The handle...

  • Can Synthetic Wire Rope be Used with Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch
I spoke with my contact at Dutton-Lainson regarding the 2-Speed Hand Winch # DL14881 that you referenced. She stated that they do not recommend using synthetic wire rope with any of their winches. This is because of how synthetic rope will get tighter as it stretches, which over time can actually cause damage to the winch drum. For this particular winch, I instead recommend using the cable # DL24104. This galvanized aircraft cable measures 50 feet long and includes a safety hook. I have...

  • Can an Electric Winch be Mounted on a Tree or Stump to Pull a Dock from a River
A tree or stump is not a recommended place to mount a winch. Normally in these situations, people mount the winch on a steel post that is held in the ground with concrete in order to support the weight. You would need to make sure the winch pays out and reels in in a straight line into the winch so it may need to be angled. A hand winch is the most common type used for this application. something like the Dutton-Lainson winch # DL14881 could work for you. It is a 2-speed brake winch rated...

The discontinued Shelby 5407 is a single-speed, 1,700 lb hand winch, and we can get you a replacement with a higher capacity. The best option for that is a winch from Dutton-Lainson: - Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL14881 The # DL14881 is a 3,500 lb capacity, 2-speed winch with a manual hand brake. Going with a 3,500 lb capacity will give you some margin for error because the capacity is reduced as the line builds up, so I strongly recommend the 3,500 lb winch. The other thing you will...

On the Dutton-Lainson winch # DL14881, the maximum drum capacity for a cable is 3/8 inches in diameter and 37 feet long. I spoke with my contact at Dutton-Lainson and he said that you could use a synthetic cable as long as it is rated high enough. The cable you use has to be rated 1-1/2 times higher than the winch capacity. In this case that is 5,250 pounds. If the cable has a hook at the end that hook must be rated 1-1/2 times greater than the cable. So that would be 7,875 pounds. I...

The Duttton-Lainson Brake Winch you referenced, part # DL14881, would be a great choice for raising and lowering a 400 lb radio tower. The winch has plenty of capacity for that weight, and the integral brake will engage as soon as the handle is released, preventing the winch from freewheeling while lowering the tower.
