The performance of an electric winch at a fraction of the cost. (of course you must not forget your cordless drill). Hand crank takes forever. In a pinch you can turn it with 2 fingers to let slack out of the strap.

Will work well on my trailer

Still working great had to load my Dixie Chopper over the summer with it & it worked like a charm. Also loaded my Yamaha Viking around 1500 lbs give are take & it loaded with know issues. It would be nice if it came with a cover I have mine under a shed & keep it cover with a small bucket.

We do have a couple of trailer jack covers that would work for you, but would be a bit big, and may not provide as much of a water resistance as your bucket, but it might be a consideration for you. I have linked them for your reference.

I really like this product. Time saver

by:

The ability to operate the hoist with a drill is essential. The hand crank is good for fine adjustment. The unit arrived quickly. The 17mm head on the single supplied lag screw necessitated changing to a 9/16" socket for the additional ones. The 5/8" socket fits the drive well. Photos will be forwarded in an e-mail.

by:

I used the Dutton worm drive winch to erect a 38ft. high tower with radio antennas mounted to it. It worked great and added a degree of safety to the operation. We were working on the roof of a 10 story building and the winch allowed us to slowly and safely rotate the tower 90deg. from a horizontal position to vertical. If the tower needs to be lowered for maintenance, it will now be a one man job with this winch in place. Great product!

by:

I purchased this winch to replace the electric winch that burned up on my forest river tent trailer that would have cost me $400.00. With just some minor adjustments it bolted in place perfectly. I purchased a ridged 750 ft. pounds drill kit from Home depot for $99.00 and it lifts and lowers great.

by:

well built, works well. you will need a drill driver with a 5/8 socket for quick deploy and retract. doesn't come with mounting hardware.

by:

First off, etrailer.com is an OUTSTANDING online dealer with customer service that will impress - I promise.

As for this worm gear winch, I am very happy with it but I had to receive a replacement for the first one delivered. The material quality is excellent and functionally it is very smooth and sturdy. D&L may benefit from some quality control improvements. The first unit was not assembled (welded) well and the holes that carriage bolt (used to attach the cable) were out of alignment. This made it impossible to insert the bolt through the spool guides. Also, on the 'good' unit, the same holes left minimum clearance for the nut and bolt head which made tightening a challenge. You will need to place the nut between the spool guide and main gear (some video instructions suggest placing it outside the gear). One last observation - once the strap (DL24242) is installed, it rolls up in a cam shape as opposed to a smooth round circumference due to the carriage bolt that secures it to the winch. The mechanical advantage of the worm gear is significant so (even the weakest drill will easily wind it) I don't believe the out-of-round strap 'take-up' imparts any concerns.

All in all, I am happy with the purchase.

by:

I selected the worm gear model because the take up handle did not interfere with my utility trailer jack. A conventional winch would not work. I selected the ratchet drive model for quick take up and release with my Dewalt 1/2 inch cordless drill. Great details for this winch from etrailer and Dutton-Lainson. Excellent American made product.

by:

Everything was as advertised.

by:

Great Winch for my NRS Raft Trailer. I use a cordless impact drill with it so it operates as an electric winch. Fantastic.

by:

The wench I ordered works great. Couldn't ask for better. Had some delay in getting it put I wasn't in a big hurry anyway. I'll share more when the project is complete. You can bet I will use etrailer.com more often. Thanks, Ron

by:

yes my wife name was on it but it was for me looks great and fast shipping also made in usa so its better built I will install it in the next few days its to lift and hold a wood floor door over my storm cellar door I needed this kind to mount to wall so will have something to do in the next few days and storm season is just about here the door is heavy so glad to find someone that sells something that will last thanks for getting it shipped fast and it a strong box

by:

Used this winch on tower system to lift grates and pans for custom 20 ft. grill. Works out perfect. Great product! No lock system needed with the worm gear.

by:

This is just what we needed. A positive forward and reverse, the worm gears keep it under control.

by:

Great service! ordered my worm gear winch four days before Christmas and was delivered in two days to Alaska.

  • Winch Option that Can be Used with Power Drill
We have winches that can have power drills attached to them to make cranking a bit easier. For this, you'd want something like the Dutton Lainson Worm Gear Winch # DL11004 which does have the hex drive option.

  • Hand Winch With Cable That Can be Replaced With Strap
A strap is not able to replace the cable for that jack, so if you wanted a worm gear hand winch and strap, you would need an option from Dutton-Lainson: - Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch - Worm Gear - Hex Drive - 2,000 lbs # DL11004 - Hand Winch Strap with Safety Hook # DL24242

  • Is there a Wire Rope/Cable that is Between 25 and 50 Feet Long for Dutton Lainson Worm Gear Winch
Dutton Lainson winch # DL11004 is designed to accept a strap and the longest strap available is 25 feet. Since that is not going to be long enough I recommend looking at a different worm gear winch such as # DL11001. However, the wire ropes for these winches go from 25 feet up to 50 feet with nothing in between. It is better to have too much line than not enough so if you go with this winch I recommend wire rope # DL24104.

  • Is there an Electric Winch with an 80 Foot Long Cable
I do have a solution for you but because you need such a long cable no electric winches will have the capacity for an 80 foot long cable. What I recommend is to use a worm gear winch with a hex drive, # DL11004. This will allow you to use an electric drill to power the line in and out. If you go with a 7/32" cable it can hold up to 82 feet of that size. However the longest 7/32" cable we have is 50 feet. So I can provide the winch just not a cable that long.

  • Does the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch Come With a Strap
The Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch - Worm Gear - Hex Drive - 2,000 lbs # DL11004 accepts a 2" wide x 20' long winch strap which is sold separately. For a winch strap that fits this hand winch, I recommend the Hand Winch Strap with Safety Hook, 2" Wide x 20' Long - 4,000 lbs. # DL24242. This strap will fit the # DL11004 and has a breaking strength of 4,000 lbs. It is designed to be used with winches with a capacity up to 2,600 lbs, and includes the mounting hardware. I have attached some video...

  • Weight Capacity of Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL11001 Using 1/4 Inch Cable
I do have a solution for you, however the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL11004 referenced in your question is actually designed for use with a polyester strap and not cable. For the Dutton-Lainson 2,000 pound hex gear hand winch that uses cable you will want part # DL11001 instead. This winch can definitely be used with 1/4 inch cable and the drum can handle up to 59 feet of it. I spoke with my contact at Dutton-Lainson and did verify that the drum hub diameter is 1-1/4 inches and on its...

  • Hand Winch Compatible with a Powered Drill For Lifting and Lowering a Gate
The Dutton-Lainson Heavy Duty Brake Winch part # DL10808 has a braking mechanism that locks in place when the handle is released. In order to obtain a ratcheting mechanism with this winch you will want to replace the handle with the Brake Winch Ratcheting Replacement part # DL70346. When used in place of the regular handle, it allows the operator to both raise and lower the load without turning the handle a full revolution. As long as your gate does not exceed 1,200 lbs, this winch will...

  • Recommended Brake Winch For Boat Trailer To Pull 3500lb Boat
You may be able to use the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch - Worm Gear - Hex Drive - 2,000 lbs # DL11004 you were looking at to load your 3500lb boat on your boat trailer, but it will come down to how long the winch distance is, and if your trailer has carpeted bunks or roller bunks. The standard rule of the thumb is 2-to-1 boat to winch ratio which would mean the # DL11004 would work up with up to a 4000lb boat. If you have roller bunks and are winching a short distance then the winch would...

  • Can Dutton-Lainson # DL11004 Worm Gear Hand Winch Be Used With Cable Rope
The Dutton Lainson worm gear winch you referred to, part # DL11004 is indeed compatible with cable. I've confirmed this for you with Dutton Lainson. The cable is available as part # DL24045.

  • Hand Winch for Use with Lightweight Loads
In cases where the weight of the load on the winch is too low to properly engage the winch brake you can use a worm gear winch instead. This type of winch uses a screw mechanism to operate the load. The weight of the load cannot cause the winch to reverse direction so no brake mechanism is needed at all. The linked page displays our range of worm gear winches. You have a choice of poly strap or wire rope models, but for a marine environment I suggest the strap type, either part # DL11004...

  • Floor Mount Winch Needed to Pull Powered Parachute Airplane Into Enclosed Trailer
We have exactly what you are looking for! The Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Hand Winch # DL11004 has a hex drive topwind handle that you can operate by hand while it sits on the floor of your trailer or with a drill and a 5/8" socket. I recommend using the drill since the worm gear operates really slow. It takes 40 turns of the handles for 1 rotation of the drum. This winch is rated for 2,000 lbs so it will easily be able to pull your powered parachute airplane into your enclosed trailer....

  • Winch Recommendation for Lifting 700 lb Sailboat Vertically
The only types of winches we can recommend for hoisting like what you are wanting to do are the worm gear winches like the # DL11011 that you referenced. This winch has more than enough capacity so it would fit and work well. For a similar winch that can use a strap instead of a wire rope you'd want the part # DL11004 with the strap part # DL24242 and you'd be set.

  • Can Dutton-Lainson Hand Brake Winch Be Used with Synthetic Rope
The Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL11004 that you referenced is only designed to handle straps like the 20 foot long # DL24242. It should not be used with synthetic rope like 6mm # BDW20095. There aren't any Dutton-Lainson hand winches that can be used with synthetic rope. This is because synthetic ropes are slippery, can slide over surfaces too easily, and have been known to jam the reel and drive gears together on winches like this.

  • Recommended Electric Winch to Pull One Ton Tree Up 28 Degree Slope
Unfortunately there is no way that a one ton winch like the Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Hand Winch with Hex Drive Handle - 2,000 lbs # DL11004 will work to pull that one tone tree up a 25 foot hill with 28 degree slope. Winches have the ability to pull their listed load on level ground. Your inline will add just over 50% so you'd multiply the capacity by about 1.86 according to the attached article. • Is a Worm Gear Winch a Good Choice for a Flat Bed Trailer
You can use Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Hand Winch with Hex Drive Handle - 2,000 lbs Item # DL11004 for your utility trailer. If you do I strongly recommend using a drill to reel in the line or let it out (worm gear winches do not have a free-spool mode) because otherwise it will move very, very slow using the crank handle. Because it's a worm gear winch, there's no need to worry about the winch spooling out or freewheeling if you lose your grip on the drill, which is a highly important safety feature.
