Well, between getting the old fixture down from 22 feet high and getting this one up, this was quite a project. However, with a little ingenuity and the help of a wench from etrailer.com (model DL10950), we now have an amazing chandelier. We could not be happier with this purchase and the quick shipment. I enclosed a few pictures of assembly and final installation.

by:

Manual hoist was perfect for my intended use. I assembled a lift for my full-sized fiberglass pickup bed cap (abt 300 lbs). Very well built unit...lifted cap with no effort utilizing 30:1 ratio. Price was good considering alternatives. The best part of the etrailer experience was the customer service. Amazon could learn a thing or two. Absolutely outstanding communication and product knowledge. I even asked it there were any discounts and they gave me 5% off. Product was well packaged and arrived within 3 business days. I'll definitely shop etrailer again.

Still works perfect after a year. Just keep a bit of grease on the gears.

by:

Have one on my maple evaporator hood to lift up to clean. These are for hanging pole so we will see as seasons open. They work great!

by:

I haven't used it yet. I plan on reducing the width by 1 inch about like I did with a previous winch from your company. It is working well for a swivel crane on my 4x8 utility trailer. This winch I am going to try to make a drill operated come along.
I may have found a problem with your brochure that came with the winch. It describes how to attach the cable to the winch but the winch I have only has one hole in the side not 3.

Great still does the job. With the narrower winch spool, it cuts down the spool capacity but more than enough for my use.

by:

A rock-solid piece of kit. I called Dutton-Lainson and they helped me understand the set-up process. It is now mounted on Yakima racks on the top of my truck cap and will be used for single-handed stepping and unstepping the mast of a sailboat. It is slow, but very steady. Pleased as punch.

by:

I purchased this winch for a lifting system for my 8’ fiberglass pickup truck canopy. The worm drive winch was easy to install and I used 1/8 inch steel cable to rig the lift system for the canopy. My canopy weighs just over 200 LBS and it is very easy to load and install the canopy on my truck. The winch is designed for cable and the best feature is that when you release the handle of the winch it stays exactly where its at. It’s a great winch and I would recommend it for any items in it’s weight range.

by:

Picked up this winch to use primarily for camper shell storage in the garage. Maybe lift other lighter items as needed. I went for the worm drive for its controlled release and hold ability. The winch fit the bill perfectly. My only minor gripe is that the site doesn't mention that a cable fastener isn't needed (such as DL 24361) and if I remember correctly there aren't instructions in the box on how to affix the cable. There is a handy how to vid on this site but took a few minutes of digging to find.

by:

Even though it is more winch than I reallyneeded, I can highly recommend this unit. In the application I am using them, they needed to be mounted to a wall to raise and lower some heavy lighting units so the worm gear really makes that convenient. As over-built as this is they should last for many years.

I can also highly recommend the people at etrailer.com. The product was shipped the next day (I placed the order late at night) and they have been very helpful in keeping me informed on the arrival of the units that were backordered. Thanks guys!

by:

The application for the winch is one that required the handle on the top of the winch to keep from having interferrence with the cranking handle. The gear ratio is quite different in that it takes more cranks of the handle to make a full revolution of the spool but with a tip from the manufacturer to use a 1/2" drill instead of the handle it makes set up time much faster and easier.

by:

I got the hand winch today and it looks great.
It will do the job perfectly
Thanks again "etrailer"

Works great, built well! A great purcha se.

by:

I haven't actually used this winch, but it looks like it is as advertised. It is much bigger though than I originally thought. It looks like the measurements are correct on the page, but it is much more imposing than I had anticipated. Overall though, it looks like a solid winch.

by:

Perfect winch for replacing the keel winch on our small sailboat. Excellent service from etrailer.

by:

excellent productI bought this worm gear winch to use on a ham radio crank-up tower. It works great using only two fingers. I would reccommend this winch to anyone . It is well built and works great under a load with only two fingers!Well worth the money.

  • Availability of Enclosed Trailer Ramp Spring Like # CB250D96SHD With 300-lb Lift Capacity
The M-3 Enclosed Trailer Ramp Spring that you referenced, part # CB250D96SHD, has a 250-lb capacity and this is the highest-rated of all such available items. If you decide to replace your ailing winch with a new one I suggest a brake winch or a worm gear winch since both of these types will prevent the ramp from free-falling. For a worm gear winch you might use the 1500-lb rated Dutton-Lainson # DL10950 that can be used with winch cable # DL24100. Two links at right will take you to...

  • Lighter Duty Worm Gear Winch Availability
The smallest rated worm gear winch we have is 1,500 lbs like the part # DL10950 that you referenced. While this is a bit overkill for the weight you need it would still work well. For a 25 foot long cable you'd then want the part # DL24100.

  • Recommended Hand Winch for Light Loads
The best option we can offer for light loads is a worm gear winch since there are no minimum load requirements. For this, I recommend the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch part # DL10950 and Hand Winch Cable with Safety Hook part # DL24100. The load will be held in place whenever the handle is released.

  • Does the Dutton Lainson Worm Gear Winch Crank In and Out
The Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Hand Winch # DL10950 that you referenced cranks one way to to reel in the cable and the other way to let it out. To deal with the high angle your cable comes in at you could angle how you mount the # DL10950 so that the handle clears. You might have to come up with a custom mount for the winch so that everything clears.

  • Winch Recommendations for Lifting Canoes and Kayaks to Storage Position
For lifting and storing your canoes and kayaks, you will want to use either a worm gear or a brake winch. Worm gear and Brake winches, see links, prevent runaway loads, and do not have a free spool mode. The pulling winch you selected would not be the best choice for your application, because it could potentially release the load if not operated safely. I would recommend a worm gear winch for ease of operation. The Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Hand Winch, # DL10950, or # DL10954, would be...

If you are wanting to use a drill to ease operation of the winch, the Dutton-Lainson # DL11011 would be a much better choice. This winch is specifically designed so that the handle is easily removable for use with a drill. Using the shaft directly connected to the drill chuck is not recommended, but the input shaft has a hexagonal cross-section, that can be used with a 5/8 inch socket or driver attached to a drill. Keep in mind that the 1500 lb capacity for the jack is based on having...

  • Comparing Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Hand Winches For Lift System
Thanks for reaching out! Both the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winches # DL10950 and # DL10954 are made in the USA and rated for 1,500 lbs so it really boils down to whether you want option with the handle, part # DL10950, or the design that comes with the looped end, part # DL10954. • How Does Worm Gear Winch Brake Work
There are a few ways brake winches operate but the worm gear winches like the part # DL10950 that you referenced have the most effective brake since the handle turns a worm gear which rides on a sprocket that is attached to the drum. Basically if the handle isn't moving there's no way for the drum turn. This is the simplest and most effective brake for a winch.

  • Recommended Hand Winch for Hoisting 110 Lb Chandelier
To raise and lower a chandelier, I would recommend using an automatic brake winch like the Pro Series # PSKR10000301. The winch has a 1000 lb capacity, which would be plenty for a 110 lb chandelier. The drum of the winch can store up to 50 feet of 7/32 inch cable, which is sold separately as part # FWC7500100. A worm gear winch like the Dutton-Lainson # DL10950 would also work, but due to its 30:1 gear ratio, you would be cranking forever.
