Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

As you well know camping in a popup is spuraic at best. They wintered well parked on boards and covered. We traveled approximately 1500 miles with no issues and no lose of pressure. They still look and act new! We will be retiring this camper this season and will sell with great looking tires and wheels. Next camper is a used hybred with 14 tires!

Tire and galvanized rim look great, 4 stars just because I haven't got any wear experience with the tire. E-trailer service is the best, though. Great follow-up to questions, with personal service. Super shipping.Awesome company to do business with.

Wheels and tires came fast and already inflated. Just had to get out the jack and they were on in ten minutes. etrailer is the best.

15 trips and 3000 miles later and the wheels and tires are working out great. Minimal tread wear. I’m ready for another year.

I purchased these tires & wheels to use on a small boat trailer. They are working well and I am happy with my purchase (as always with e-trailer).

I am still happy with the tires and wheels a year later. I cant say they have a lot of milage as I keep the trailer a few 100 yards from the boat ramp. But no problems or complaints.

by:

I purchased the AM30150 galvanized wheels and 5-70 C rating tires for my sailboat trailer.I could not find the C rating tire in local stock of any of the tire retailers in my area. I ordered these online from etrailer.com. I found the purchase price to be the most competitive, the size was in stock and the delivery was quick. After one year of service they have no rust and they have performed well with no visible wear.

by:

Galvanized rim looks really nice. Not just a cheap sprayed on look but thick, smooth and clean. Tire with 6 bias ply and “c” rating should keep trailer sway away. I am very pleased with what I can see. Won’t be using till spring but hoping smaller size tire will improve shallow launches. Current supply chain issues created a long wait but etrailer consistently and appropriately kept me in the loop with expected timeline updates and alternative options. I am glad I had the patience to wait for this wheel set and certainly appreciate the customer service of etrailer

by:

Your website educated me and allowed for the purchase of exactly what we needed to get our boat and trailer back in service. After 10 years of surgeries and rehab, having exactly the tires needed to get the family back on the water is an incalculable joy. Delivery was fast and efficient and the tires were ready for mounting when they arrived. Thanks for all you do and a pat on the back to all those in the warehouse. Will send photos when the project is complete...

tires were shipped quickly and arrived on time in good order exactly as specified. Looking forward to improved ride on my motorcycle cargo trailer.

They hold air OK. They're advertised as Kenda brand but that is not the brand on the tire! I'd tell you what it does say but I'm inside, and there's a sleet storm out right now.

by:

Upgraded from a 4.8-8. Larger diameter = lower tire rpm, increased ground clearance.

  • Can 4.80/4.00-8 Boat Trailer Tire & 5 on 4-1/2 Wheel be Upgraded to Larger Tire
It may be possible, depending on how much clearance you have - with trailer tires, the general rule of thumb is you want at least 3" of clearance from the top of the tire to your fender and at least 1" of clearance between the inside of the tire and your trailer's frame rail. A 4.80/4.00-8 tire measures 16.1" diameter when inflated and 4.7" wide, so if you have the clearance you can go to a 5.70-8 tire which is 18" diameter and 5.8" wide, and there are three different load ranges to choose...

  • Are There Wider Tires for the Malone EcoLight Sport Trailer with Post Style Carrier for 4 Kayaks
The Malone EcoLight Sport Trailer with Post Style Carrier for 4 Kayaks part # MAL63FR comes with 4.80/4.00-8" tires which measure 4.6" wide. There isn't much room for larger tires but you likely could squeeze in there a 5.70-8, the Loadstar 5.70-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" Galvanized Wheel part # AM30150 which measures 5.9" wide. Unfortunately, you won't be able to order the trailer with this size but rather order the trailer with the size it comes with and swap them out after the fact.

The bore size or pilot diameter of the Loadstar 5.70-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" Galvanized Wheel # AM30150 is 2.8". The Kenda Karrier S-Trail ST145/R12 Radial Tire w/ 12" White Spoke Wheel # AM31199DX is going to have a pilot diameter of 3.19 if that is the correct size that you need. This is our smallest size wheel with that large of a hub bore. If you require a smaller wheel and tire we can look into a different hub for your axle. • Does The Wheel Hub Opening Have To Match The Hub Size With The Wheel and Tire # AM30150?
As the Loadstar 5.70-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" Galvanized Wheel # AM30150 is lug centric it is okay to be larger. Most trailer applications will use tapered Lug Nuts # CE11051 with this style wheel mounting surface. The lug nuts will center the wheel on the hub. Trailers with hub centric wheels will want to ensure the hub diameters match and will use Flange Wheel Nuts # LI84FR. This ensures the wheel is centered on the hub and can float on the studs.

  • Can Tubes be Used With Trailer Tire AM10012?
It is not recommended to use tubes in a tubeless tire like the Kenda K353 # AM10012 because it will generate more heat in the tire which can lead to a blowout. If you are looking for a tire with tubes because the wheels on your trailer are designed for tube tires, I recommend replacing the wheel and tire. To do this, you only need to know your wheel's bolt pattern; if you are unsure what it is I have added a link to a help article detailing how to find it. For a 5.70-8 bias tire and wheel...
