Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

The product is outstanding the trailer pulled better after the tire change. The tire design makes for a nicer ride, powder coated rims looked great, and it fit on the trailer hub perfectly. It really looks nice on the trailer. I appreciated the videos on the website that described how to measure the bolt pattern. Thanks etrailer, I have recommended you to several of my friends.

The tires have been great…no issues. I don’t use the trailer a lot, but the times I have, the tires have worked out well.

by:

They look great on the trailer I just bought in which the previous owner forgot to tighten/torque the lug nuts after packing the bearings the previous fall/winter. That buggered up one of the holes one of the wheels so this purchase was to replace the bad one and the other one became a full size spare. And a great value for the price!

by:

I needed a replacement tire in a hurry for the Labor Day weekend to tow a trail load of ATV's to trails in northern Michigan. There were no local tire stores that stocked this tire - all would have to order it in and would take 2-3 days. I had ordered parts from e-trailer in the past, so your website showed a 5 day delivery and at a lower cost with a wheel then just a tire locally. Then, the tire and wheel showed up in 3 days! Thanks for the quick delivery!

Still working great !

Upgrading my tires to help carry the weight of my side by side. Using my snowmobile trailer to hall the 1,600 Lb. machine. I went from 770 max load to the 935 max load. Should work well!

by:

Great looking tire and wheels. The price was right and shipping was super fast. Couldn't be happier.

by:

The shipping was fast and the product was exactly what I needed. I would definitely buy from etrailer again!!

Still going strong, really love that just need to install and go, cost to buy new tire and get installed on original rim cost was same, and to get new rim with new tire was a big plus, now i have a spare also

by:

Product came within two days - fits up perfect!

by:

I bought these tires, with new wheels, from etrailer a year ago. They replaced larger diameter tires & wheels on my utility trailer, which I needed to lower in order to get it into my garage with my UTV on iit. But of course I need an especially good load rating for the small diameter, so the new tires & wheels needed to be wider. The tires are heavy for their size, a good indication that the manufacturer put into them the material really needed for this load rating and for decent tread depth. etrailer's Website was extremely helpful with all data needed, including dimensions needed to make sure the wider tires & wheels would clear my trailer frame and that the wheels would fit my existing lugs. Very happy camper!

Another year down the road Im still very happy with this purchase, for all the reasons I gave initially, and the tires are wearing very well.

by:

It is interesting that you wrote at this time. A few weeks ago I tried mounting the tires on my trailer. After tightening the lug nuts, I gave the tire a spin, and found that it rubbed against the frame of the trailer. I removed the tire, and a visual inspection between the new tire and the old, showed the new tire, with the EXACT same size information, visibly larger than the old tire...totally UNACCEPTIBLE! Long story short, I found tires stocked by a local distributer, by a different manufacturer, that I was able to use; they carried the same size designation found on the tires that you supplied to me. I'm not sure what I would have been able to do if I hadn't lucked into finding the local distributer, who traded the tires supplied by you with ones that fit my trailer.

Thank you for your review. The 7 inch diameter measurement is for the wheel but the bias tire is actually 8.9 inches thick. Bias-ply tires have thicker sidewalls, which can improve sidewall cut resistance, so your original wheel was probably a radial. It is not recommended to mix bias and radial tires on the same application.

fast delivery like product

good looking tire. Matches tire and wheels on snowmobile trailer. Using it as a spare. Old spare rusted out.

I used it on a snowmobile trailer so it has not had much use since last winter. It fit perfect and worked great at the time. Sure it will be good to go again once snow flies.

by:

So far so good. Had these installed on my snowmobile trailer at the beginning of the season. Have put close to 1,000 miles on them so far and everything is looking great. Thanks to e-trailer.com for the very fast shipping and for the safe and secure packaging of the 2 tires along with the trailer hitch. Couldn't have been happier with my purchase.

8/12/20 My 3 sets of Kenda 215/60-8 Trailer tires arrived today!!! Box's were in great shape. I live in SC. The reason for buying these wheels and tires...My wife & I had just bought a 13' Aqua Cycle pedal boat with 15" pontoons. The boat is great but the trailer had Load Star 13" wheels and tires. The boat trailer set way to high when launching or retrieving the boat at the ramps.
Today I installed new Kenda 8" wheels and tires ..it dropped my trailer down a whopping 6" that will keep my 3/4 truck exhaust pipe out of the water!!!! Very happy with the new wheel and tires!!! First time ordering from etrailer.com....very good experience!!!

by:

Tires and rims arrived in good shape, with tire beads seated on rim. I anticipate them working as specified.

by:

The wheels are nicely finished. The tires have a little more sidewall poke compared to the original tires (made in 1994) which had more of a square profile. They are the same stated size, height and tread width measure out the same. This could result in a clearance issue between the suspension and the sidewall of the tire. I had to grind a little welding splatter off the trailer suspension arm to stop it from rubbing the sidewall of the tire.

by:

Even prettier than the picture. Awesome little wheel and tire combination, shipped quickly and ready to use. I've bought the narrow, 12" wheel tire combo from walmart before for $80, and i'm so glad i found the etrailer website and the better wheel tire combo for 25% less money. Great deal.

by:

Good communication; fast shipment; wheels, tires and bushings were like original equipment and fit perfectly. Have worked well for 12 months. Would buy from this vendor again.

  • Availability of Tire Size 215/60-8 on Wheel with 4 on 4 inch Bolt Pattern
We have two options for a Loadstar 215/60-8 Load Range C on a 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern. First is the # AM3H290 which has a white wheel and the part # AM3H300 which is on a galvanized steel wheel.

  • Is There Height Difference Between Trailer Tire Size 5.70-8 and 215/60-8
The diameter of the tire size 5.70-8 that you have now is 18.1 inches and the diameter of a 215/60-8 would be 18.3 inches so you'd not really lose any vertical clearance since the height difference gets divided by two to determine fender clearance difference. If you had a 4 bolt mounting pattern you'd need the # AM3H290 or if you have a 5 bolt pattern part # AM3H310.

  • Upgrading to a Larger Bias Ply Trailer Tire
As long as the bolt pattern matches, there are really only 2 other things you will need to confirm. You will need to make sure you have the needed space available for a larger tire and wheel combination. The minimum distance from the top of the tire to the bottom of the fender will need to be 3 inches when under load. Though less important, you will also want to make sure you have around 1 1/2 inches of clearance from the sidewall of the tire to the side of the fender or frame of the trailer. The...

This 8-ply tire has a load capacity of 1,165 lbs at 70 psi. For a Load Range C tire only I recommend part # AM1HP26. This is a 6-ply tire and has a maximum load rating of 935 lbs at 50 psi. Both of these tires are bias-ply tires and will work on the rims you have for your tires. If you are looking for a wheel/tire combo...

If you want to stay with your current size tires I've linked the page to all your options. • Smallest Radial Tire For A Snowmobile Trailer Application
The smallest radial tire we have is a 12 inch tire. I've done the calculations with the tire on a 12 inch rim and you'd be looking at a little over 21 inches diameter with # AM31199DX. The load rating would right around 1220 at 65 psi with a load rating of D. You would be limited by your axle and not the tire if you are able to fit this large a tire when loaded. The radial tires will run cooler on your long drives.

  • Recommended Trailer Wheels for a 215 60-8 Tire With a 5 on 4 1/2 Bolt Pattern
If by flat you mean the paint type then the answer is no, unfortunately. The closest I was able to find apart from straight up steel is the Kenda 215/60-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel # AM3H310 which has a semi-gloss coat. Your best bet honestly is to use a steel wheel # AM3H320 and have it painted flat. If you're referring to a run flat tire then we definitely don't have those. Your best bet would be to get in touch with a local tire shop and see what they've got.

  • Difference Between Bias Ply And Radial Ply Trailer Tires And What Does Load Range Mean
The main difference between bias ply and radial ply tire is how the tire is constructed. The cords underneath the tire are run in different directions. On a bias tire, the cords run at a 32 degree angle from the direction of travel and on a radial tire, the cords will run at 90 degrees from direction of travel, or across the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. Because of the construction of a radial tire, the tire has more flex and will allow for more ground contact. That will improve traction...

  • Should I Run Lower PSI In My Trailer Tires When Towing An Empty Trailer With My 1993 Jeep YJ
You always want to have the tires on your trailer inflated to the maximum tire pressure as specified on the tire. If you run the trailer tires at a lower PSI, the thicker sidewall of the trailer tires would cause the tires to heat up quicker and would reduce the life of the tires. I have linked an FAQ on trailer tires that you may find as a useful reference.

What you describe is called 'cupping', where the tire looks like something's been taking bites out of it. Usually cupping on a tire is caused by the tire bouncing on the road, which can have many causes. Check the air pressure in your trailer tires. A trailer tire should be kept inflated to the maximum air pressure listed on the tire sidewall. Also make sure the weight rating of your tires is not being exceeded.
