Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Although etrailer did not have a D rated tire till may they hooked me up with a tire that fits my trailer so I can get back on the road in time for spring 4 wheeling! They also gave me faster shipping and offered other solutions to not having the tire I wanted. Great customer service and product!

by:

etrailer does a great job delivering the parts you want quickly and efficiently at prices you would be hard pressed to beat. What else do you want?

by:

Got exactly what I needed to update my trailer. Service and purchasing experience was excellent as usual, and delivery was as advertised. No photos yet because they trailer is out "in service" moving a hottub on non-optimal wheels.
These highway-rated 8" wheels are hard to find. Golf-cart wheels need not apply for an ATV/sled trailer for road use.

by:

Rotated tires on my kayak trailer, etrailer was able to provide an exact tire to match the two original tires. Pleased to have a third to work into the rotation.

by:

The finish on the wheel was very poor. Pitted and very inconsistent. Looked like someone spray painted a corroded wheel. In the process of returning for a refund.

Galvanzied wheels are dipped in a solution and then are drip dried which does result in a rough finish. I will have our Customer Service team about the finish on this rim as it does sound like it was a bad job.

by:

Exactly what I needed. Great replacement tire for tilted snowmobile trailer.

by:

Great Quality

by:

Tires and wheels came FAST and were exactly what I was looking for to use on my 8.5 x 11 aluminum flatbed trailer. Fantastic products and even better service.

by:

Just what I ordered, looks and should work great !

Wheel and tire work perfectly on my snowmobile trailer, will likely be buying another couple before this season, if the price didn't go up again.....

@KevinD The prices can fluctuate, they could possibly go down! We're glad to hear that the wheel/tires are working well for you...

by:

Excellent customer service--Tires were placed on my big cat trailer.

by:

Great price for the tire and wheel, satisfied with the appearance of product. Delivery was prompt and when the original tire I ordered was not immediately available I received a phone call the same day to let me know just that and I was given the option of waiting until that tire was available or accept another tire and wheel with a C rating instead of the D rating wheel. The C rating was actually all I needed for the application. The e-mail communication was also excellent. I was notified continually of the tracking of the order.

by:

Just as described and ordered, fast shipping. Thank you

by:

Super happy with the tire wheel combo set. They are great and price was unreal! I received 2 tires and wheels installed and aired up already. Ready to put on the trailer for what I would have expected to pay for one!
And to top it off Shipping was included--such a Deal!

Tires and wheels are working great!!

by:

Came earlier than expected very happy

by:

On time delivery with text messages as to when it would arrive. Product I. Perfect co diction as well

by:

This is the second time I have ordered from etrailer.com and have been pleased both times. I needed snowmobile trailer tires but the rims looked horrible from our WI winters. I could not find tires with rims locally and the tires alone locally were about the same price as the entire package from etrailer. I also liked the fact that they were galvanized, which I hope will last longer than painted or powder coated rims. The shipping was quick and the overall buying experience very easy. When purchasing a tire/rim combination, I only wish we had the option to include balancing, as I had to get that done locally.

by:

I bought these to upgrade a single axle utility trailer I often tow across very soft wet ground. They've worked well to provide wider contact area, and their 65 MPH rating means I can still tow on local roads, though I'd have to swap back to the narrow OEM wheels for interstate travel.

by:

Great product. Even though they were on back order. They arrived in a very reasonable time.

by:

Product is very good. Mounted wheels today on our Vermeer chipper. Only problem was delivery by UPS. Couldn’t deliver to address. Went through tracking site and did an update / verification of delivery address. And they ended up delivering to my billing address ( across town and unsecured) SAD !

by:

Snowmobile season here is about to begin. I went out back to retrieve my covered trailer and machines to find a flat tire. Upon further examination I discovered both tires were weather cracked and junk. I proceeded to look for the necessary tires and wheels online. I found the absolute best price for what I needed with free shipping at etrailer.com. Tires arrived before the expected date and are on the trailer. I'm ready to go sleddin'.

by:

I received my order very fast from e-trailer.com, and one of the rims was damaged, so I sent an e-mail, and I got a response very fast also, they asked if I could send some pictures, so I did, and they had sent a replacement out immediately. very impressed with my first experience with etrailer.com. sorry I have no pictures of the floe snowmobile trailer right now, but it looks pretty good with the new galvanized rims on it.

by:

Many thanks to Natalie for the help she was in making my purchase of 3 Kenda tires & 1 galvanized wheel painless!! She helped me navigate your website to find the correct size & load range for my application. And she sent follow up emails with order & tracking info as well. My order arrived a day earlier than expected, thank you etrailer

by:

These tires have done extremely well. I have had other people buy these tires and they too have had good luck. Im definitely going to buy some more of these tires when needed in the future.

The tires and wheels have been absoultely amazing. They have held up to some long distance road trips at 75mph. Also the rims still look new.

by:

Good quality Kenda tire on a nice galvanized wheel. Used on a snowmobile trailer. Great service from etrailer.com. I have ordered several times from them and always been pleased. Quality product from a great company. Thanks

by:

I am a repeat customer and very happy with the prices, price match, and quality of their products. The shipping was quick, prices great, website and support are great too.

  • Replacement 8" X 7" Galvanized Trailer Wheels With 5 On 4-1/2" Bolt Pattern and 18.5/8.5-8" Tires
We have the Galvanized Steel Trailer Wheel # AM20028 you will be able to use with your 18.5/8.5-8" trailer tires. These wheels are 8" in diameter and 7" wide with your 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern. While we currently do not have the 18.5/8.5-8" trailer tires you can likely switch to the more common Loadstar K399 Bias Trailer Tire - 215/60-8 # AM1HP26. This tire will be 18.3" in overall diameter and 8.9" wide versus your tire which is 17.8" in diameter and 8.5" wide. If this tire will fit...

  • Tire Recommendation for Replacing Size 215/60-8 on Small Trailer
The highest weight rated trailer tire we have in the size 215/60-8 is the Kenda part # AM3H320 which has capacity of 1,165 lbs at 70 psi. I can't gaurantee that it will work well for mounting curbs on a regular basis but this would be our best option in that size.

When you compare two of the same size tires from the same manufacturer like the # AM3H325 Load range D and # AM3H320 in load range C in 215/60-8, both tires are of great quality, but the Load Range D tire has a higher capacity (1164 lb vs 935 for the Load Range C). The load range D tire isn't 'better', it just is constructed for a higher weight rating. As far as the cost goes, what we price a given product at is dependent on many different parameters, with our cost and the the prevailing...

  • Recommended Tires And Wheels To Replace 18.5/8.5-8 Tires On Triton Trailer
The tire size you can use as a replacement for your triton trailer is a 215/60-8. If you want just the tire, I recommend part # AM1HP28 which is a Load Range D tire. This 8-ply tire has a load capacity of 1,165 lbs at 70 psi. For a Load Range C tire only I recommend part # AM1HP26. This is a 6-ply tire and has a maximum load rating of 935 lbs at 50 psi. Both of these tires are bias-ply tires and will work on the rims you have for your tires. If you are looking for a wheel/tire combo...

For the Kenda 215/60-8 Bias Trailer Tire and 8 Inch Wheel, # AM3H320, it measures 18.3 inches in diameter and it is 8.9 inches wide. This is going to have a smaller diameter than a 5.30x12 tire and wheel but it will be much wider, up to about 4 inches wider, than your existing wheels and tires. You will need to make sure you have enough clearance for the new size, at least 2 inches or more between the inside side wall and the trailer. If you do have enough clearance then you will be able...

The Kenda 215/60-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" Galvanized Wheel part # AM3H320 has a zero offset which means the hub face for the wheel will sit directly in the center of the tire. The section width of this tire is 8.9" so if you take this and then divide by 2 to get 4.45" that will then give you the distance from the center of the hub face to the outside edge of the tire on either side.

  • Recommended Trailer Wheels for a 215 60-8 Tire With a 5 on 4 1/2 Bolt Pattern
If by flat you mean the paint type then the answer is no, unfortunately. The closest I was able to find apart from straight up steel is the Kenda 215/60-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel # AM3H310 which has a semi-gloss coat. Your best bet honestly is to use a steel wheel # AM3H320 and have it painted flat. If you're referring to a run flat tire then we definitely don't have those. Your best bet would be to get in touch with a local tire shop and see what they've got.

  • Will Wider Trailer Tires on a Kayak Trailer Make it Bounce Less
Actually, the wider the tire, the more of the road you are going to feel so it would actually make it worse. Skinnier tires with less road contact would be better but I think the issue has more to do with the weight of the trailer than the tires. Since the trailer is made to carry kayaks it is not going to be very heavy. A light trailer is going to bounce some. Adding more weight to get closer to the trailer's gross trailer weight rating will help.

I can tell you that we receive shipments of these Kenda # AM3H320 quite frequently. So they do not sit in our warehouse for long. Unfortunately we do not have a way to provide the date code for a tire prior to you receiving them. With the current state of the tire supply line, our tires are usually around 9-12 months from the date code when we ship them. Yes, the Kenda 215/60-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8 inch Galvanized Wheel, # AM3H320, will replace a wheel and tire combination with tire size 18.5 x 8.5 - 8, as long as the bolt pattern of your original wheel is 5 on 4-1/2 inches and the weight capacity of your trailer axle is 1,870 pounds or less.
