Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Fast delivery, great price, and the website makes picking the tires easier. I ordered two tires on rims and the box was well designed and made the tires easy to handle, simple but not too many companies have thought it through.

by:

The extra speed rating allowed me to safely run 80 mph on a long rip with our trailer. Good quality wheels and tires (bought a pair).

by:

I looked all over the internet and these are the only replacement tires I have found or my Vermeer 6 inch chipper. These are great highway tires and are HALF THE COST! My tire goes flat my chipper is on the side of the road and no tire shop ,specialty tire shop tractor supply can help me find a tire even close. Vermeer wants me to pay well over $120 a tire for a tire that HAS AN INNERTUBE making repair impossible. These are tubeless tires and can be repaired. Thank you e-trailer for being the one source for my chipper tires. -That1TreeGuy

by:

The tires were delivered quickly and have performed as expected. I’ve had the tires for a year now. They sent me an email asking to give a review . This is the only way to rate the quality of the product. I definitely recommend the tires and etrailer.

by:

I was in the market for a higher load rating tire to haul two utility atvs. Etrailer had exactly what I was looking for at an excellent price, and very fast shipping.

by:

Very pleased with the purchase I made from etrailer.....my order arrived a day earlier then scheduled and the wheels and tires are in excellent condition as is the safety chains and tongue coupler I will definitely order again from this company

by:

etrailer is my go to place for anything trailer related. Fair prices, good products and FAST delivery !

We’re on the snowmobile trailer, but we haven’t had to use it very much because we haven’t had much snow in the last three years But they’re holding air and it’s nice having the galvanized rims you don’t get all that salt damage that you do on the steel painted rims

by:

Packaging, fitment, quality and delivery time were all as expected. Perfect for my 2 place snowmobile trailer!

by:

After looking locally and talking to several businesses, realize they knew less than I did and could not get me a D load rating. Did not really want to go online to order but found e trailer and the video answer all my questions and had the product I was looking for . Ordered and three days later at my door, free shipping and the product I wanted. Hard not to use them again in the future,

by:

Easy website to navigate. Free shipping with my order. I was really surprised how fast it arrived at my house. Would order from here again

by:

Perfect fit .nice looking tire&wheel

by:

A great upgrade to a work trailer. Better ride and greater carrying capacity. They look good and work really well.
The packing and box were outstanding.

by:

These tires are a good value and have given me great service in the past. I especially like being able to buy a load range D tire from etrailer. It seems like the tires used by OEMs have little excess weight carrying capacity. Going to a higher load rating gives me a little "extra margin" of safety and ultimately results in a longer life. The tires/rims sold by etrailer always ship quickly and arrive on time.

Perfect. Still no leaks no wear and no rust. Nothing, just what we all hope for in a trailer tire.

by:

I always try to support our local businesses, but in this case they snoozed and lost while I won. They did not have the product I needed and could order it so I figured if I was going to order and wait, I may as well check on-line. I got a better product for essentially the same money. It did delay me by several days, but it was well worth the wait. No mounting fees, no valve stem fee, upgrade from a load range "C" to "D" and I did not even have to spend the fuel to go to town and wait for the service center to take care of my tire problem. My comfort factor is now very high with taking the trailer out and about for use.

Super fast shipping and wouldn’t buy trailer parts and such from anywhere else , be testing the new tires on the trailer on a trip to Northern NH from MA on my ATV’s , already replaced bearings from etrailer, great people !

by:

The perfect tire for an experimental boat dolly to launch and retrieve our boat from the boathouse on the lake.

by:

Extremely fast service and delivery

by:

Quick service and love the follow up

I needed new tires for my Vermeer BC600XL Chipper. It’s an odd size, and not all that common. But etrailer.com had them And the price for the tire and wheel combo at etrailer.com, being less than what I could find, just for tires from other companies…. And a far better tire!!! And delivery was quick and on time. Thank you etrailer.

by:

I needed a set of heavy load tires for my 7x12 atv trailer. I found these and could not believe the price which included the rims. Very happy with my purchase.

by:

Ordering was quick and easy. There were several choices for payment. Within a couple of minutes I received a conformation of the order. The next day I received all the tracking information, when to expect my package and everything happened as expected. These people are excellent. I have been dealing with them for several years and they keep getting better.

  • I Want a Larger Tire for my Coleman Pop Up Camper That has Tire Size 4.80/4.00-8
We have what you're looking for. Depending on the amount of room that you have is going to determine the size you can go up to. The original tire that you have like the Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire part # AM30060 is about 16.1" Tall and 4.6" wide. The first notable step up would be a Kenda 215/60-8 Bias Trailer Tire part # AM3H325 which is about 18.3" Tall and 8.9" Wide. This one is significantly wider than you current tire but just slightly taller. For a good increase in height...

  • Can I Upgrade to a Load Range D Tire Size 165/65-8
I may have a potential solution for you, but the tire size 165/65-8 is only available in load range C. To step up in load range, you will have to switch to tire size 215/60-8 Tire and Wheel # AM3H325 or 5.70-8 # AM30155 which are both slightly larger in diameter by about 1-1/2 inch and the 215/60-8 tire # AM3H325 is about 2 inches wider while the 5.70-8 tire # AM30155 is about 1/2 inch narrower. With the size difference, you will just need to make sure you have the clearance available...

The closest item to your original request for Kenda LoadStar tires is the Kenda # AM3H325 tire on a galvanized wheel. This tire is sized 215/60-8. this tire has an 1165 pound individual tire and wheel maximum capacity. It has a speed rating of "M" with an 8 ply bias tire and a 5 year warranty on the tire. If you want to go up to a 10" wheel then I can recommend the Kenda # AM3H440 tire on galvanized wheel. This tire is sized 205/65-10 and has a tire and wheel capacity of 1320 pounds....

You will want to stay within the limits of the posted speed limit for sure but if you are using our tires they are rated for 65 miles per hour maximum unless otherwise stated on the tire itself. So, on the highway you can go as fast as you are comfortable traveling up to 65 miles per hour. I have included a link to our trailer tire FAQ article for you to view. Other things to consider are the increased weight and momentum associated with towing. If the trailer has electric brakes I recommend...

I could not find any specs for the wheels/tires on your 1978 Shoreline 3-rail motorcycle trailer. Sometimes the stock tire size will be noted on the VIN sticker. In any case we can help. First, we need to confirm the hub/wheel bolt pattern as there are several different 5-bolt patterns. The linked article will tell you how to confirm which you have. Next we'll need to know the axle weight rating so that we can help you select tires of the appropriate Load Range that can handle the trailer's...

  • Trailer Tire/Wheel Combo for a Karavan Snowmobile Trailer with 8 Inch Wheels and Hydraulic Brakes
There are currently no brake assemblies that are going to fit an 8 inch wheel because of the exact problem you have encountered: the hubs are too large to fit. The smallest we can go is for 10 inch wheels. You might be able to go to a 205/65-10 tire which would be about 2 inches taller than the 215/60-8 tire and wheel # AM3H325 that you have referenced. You would need at least 1 inch of clearance above the existing tire for the larger size. If you have the space on the trailer for the...

When you switch to a smaller tire size you end up losing quite a bit of weight capacity and you'll also end up lowering the trailer's height. This could cause the trailer to drag if the clearance was currently close. I'd recommend sticking to the current tire sizes each trailer has since that's what the trailer was designed for and seemingly the size is working well for the trailer currently. For just a tire in the size of 205/75-14 we have the Westlake part # 274-000012 which is priced...

As long as your trailer axles do not have brakes on them the Kenda 215/60-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" Galvanized Wheel # AM3H325 that you referenced will fit on your hubs since it has the same 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. The pilot diameter of this wheel is a bit smaller though at 2.8 inches so you might measure to make sure this diameter would fit over the center portion of your trailer hub.

  • Are Bias-Ply Tires for Off-Road Use Only
We do sell wheel/tire combos, that is a tire that is mounted on a wheel, but they're sold individually, not in pairs. For instance, the # AM3H325 you'd looked at is a 215/60-8 wheel tire combo. It features a 215/60-8 bias ply load range D tire moutned on a 8 x 7 galvanized wheel with a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. The tire is pre-mounted on the wheel. For 2 wheels/tires, you'd need to order 2 of that part number. Bias ply tires have a stiffer sidewall, which makes them better for off...

  • Can Trailer Tire Size go From 165×6.50×8 to 18.5×8.50×8
You'd have to upgrade the wheel as well. The current size you have of 165x6.50-8 fits a smaller width rim at 5-3/8 inch whereas the 18.5×8.50×8 fits a 7 inch wide wheel. So you'd want the part # AM3H325 for if you have a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern or part # AM3H300. The tire is going to be 50 mm wider and right at 2 inches taller.

  • Does Tire Pressure Affect Trailer Tire Weight Capacity
To get the full capacity of your trailer tires they have to be inflated to the max psi rating that's on the sidewall of the tire. Otherwise the tire capacity is diminished and excess heat can build up. If your tires are rated at 1,165 lbs that means that with two of them you have a total of 2,330 lbs in tire capacity. You have to also figure in the weight of your trailer as well as the ATVs. The speed rating for the tire will be listed on the sidewall as well.

Your 10 inch wheels will be the smallest wheels that will fit on your hubs. To get into your garage you be able to remove air from your tires and then re-inflate once inside. I recommend being careful if you go that route simply because the sidewall of your tire can be damaged if there is not proper inflation under...

The current 175/80-13 size tires on your boat trailer have an overall diameter/height of 24.1 inches and a width of 6.9 inches. The smaller 215/60-8 tires that you mentioned will certainly be smaller in height with a diameter of 18.3 inches, but will actually have a larger width of 8.5 inches.
