Video Transcript for Review of etrailer Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension - Spring Mounting Hardware - APT8

Hello, everybody. This is Jeff at trailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a look at the tandem axle trailer hanger kit for double-eye springs. Now, this hanger kit will allow you to attach four leaf springs to your trailer frame. Now, the leaf springs we do sell separately on our website. This kit will basically include everything laid out here on the table.

It includes all the hangers you need, the equalizers, the shackle straps, the shackle bolts, and the shackle nuts all included. Now, this is designed for use on trailers that have tandem 2,000-pound to 7,000-pound axles. And it does not include the components for mounting the axle to the springs. Now, we're gonna go through all these just to show you the size of 'em. We'll start with, let me just zoom in a little bit here and we're gonna measure 'em.

We'll start with the front and rear hangers, that'll be the smaller. There's four of those. And basically, these are 2 1/2 inches tall, and when you measure the hanger, a hanger is always measured from the top to the center of this bolt hole down here. So if we put a ruler on it from the center to the very top, it's gonna be right at 2 1/2 inches tall. And again, that's for the two front and the two rear hangers.

Now, the two taller ones, those are the center hangers that the equalizers will connect to. Those, the same way you measure from the center of this hole to the top. So if we put a ruler on it, you're gonna be right at 4 1/4 inches tall for the two center hangers. Now, the equalizers, there's two of those right here. These are curved equalizers.

And again, the length of 'em will be measured center of this hole to the center of this hole. So if we put a ruler on it, there's your 7 3/4 inches length for the curved equalizers. The shackle straps, there's eight of those. Those again, center to center on the bolt holes. So if we measure it, it's right at 2 5/8 inches long on the shackle straps. The shackle bolt comes with 14 of those. Those are gonna be three inches long and they're measured from the bottom of the head to the end of the bolt. So there's your three-inch measurement. The diameter on these bolts are 9/16 of an inch, and then it comes with the 14 9/16-size diameter lock nuts. But that should do it for the review on the tandem axle trailer hanger kit for the double-eye springs..

Order received was missing significant pieces as per my notification to customer service. Looks like all parts, nuts bolts flanges were all packed loose in the box, UPS destroyed the package and reboxed, resulting in missing items. Attached picture is what I received.

Oh, goodness! I am sorry to hear it arrived missing pieces. I have already sent your information to our customer service team and they will be reaching out to you.

Glad I chose etrailer for my purchase will definitely buy from them again, I had a old boat trailer that was given to me from a friend will convert the boat trailer into a BBQ concession trailer later with heavier axles and springs now using the axles and springs from that trailer to the new one for my UDS smokers, I have 5 of them to mount to the new one making them dedicated to that trailer.

by:

This kit made it easy to redo the spring location on a used trailer I bought. Also good quality kit

by:

Great tandem axle kit.

by:

Everything was what I expected. They look heavier built than the others I looked at. Everything was packaged well and shipped fast.

by:

Great fit for my build , I shifted the axles back on my utility trailer and these hangers worked out fine with my original leaf springs.

by:

Received what I ordered and matched up as expected. I don’t think anything more needs to be said.

by:

I ordered the parts on a Sunday and they were on my doorstep Tuesday afternoon, I got exactly what I ordered and I am pleased with the product.

by:

I ordered this on a sunday and needed it before the next weekend so I paid for expedited shipping. By Wednesday it had still not shipped so I called the customer service line. After waiting on hold for almost 30 min. I was told it would ship out that day and I would have it by Friday or Saturday at the latest with the expedited shipping. I didn't receive the package until the following Tuesday. The parts themselves are what I expected but the customer service sucks. If you are needing something soon just buy it local, don't waste your money trying to get it quicker by paying for faster shipping from etrailer.

I would love to help make sure that this is the kit for you. Are you replacing worn out suspension parts or building a new trailer? If you are replacing the parts you would want to measure the existing ones to match them.

by:

They work but the hanger brackets were thinner than my existing ones on my trailer so these are inferior to the OE I had to replace when I added an axle

by:

Customer service and tech support were great to work with. Fast shipping!

by:

Worked for my application!

by:

Excellent customer service!! Great product that fit perfect

by:

Perfect replacements for rebuilding the suspension on by boat trailer! Excellent quality parts very well made with exact fit!

This is my first time using etrailer but it certainly will not be the last!!

by:

Showed up on time. Everything fit good. Had good customer service with good information.

All working good. No problems.

by:

Purchased a trailer that looked real good, after a couple months when I was getting ready to install brakes and paint the frame, I noticed the suspension really needed rebuilt. Ordered hangers, equalizers, and new leaf springs. Everything came fairly quickly, unfortunately in transit 2 of the 4 leaf springs got lost, but were immediately shipped/replaced by the company. Great customer service, great help with anything you may have questions with. Appears to be great quality material so far. I will maintain to use etrailer for any of my trailer needs.

by:

light weight junk !! says my boat trailer Mechanic.
i ended up throwing the parts away and buying heavy duty parts so that my 62 year old self ain't strainded on the interstate with a busted trailer again on a Sunday where nobody is open for you to get any service to a boat trailer. a real bummer.

This kit is designed for use on trailers with tandem, 2000lb to 7000lb axles. I understand if you would like something that holds a higher capacity.

by:

Hi quality parts !!

by:

The parts work like the original.

by:

I bought this kit to replace the equalizers and shackles on my tandem axle trailer. Buying the kit from etrailer was cheaper than buying the parts locally including shipping.

by:

I am very pleased with the Loaded backing plates, drums, bearings and tandem axle hanger kit. All appear to be better quality than what came on the trailer originally

by:

  • Hanger Placement on the Tandem HAnger Kit part # APT8
There is no definitive guide to the installation of the Tandem-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit for Double-Eye Springs part # APT8. It is designed as a universal tandem axle trailer hanger kit. It can be used in many different situations. Basics are the hangers get welded to the trailer where you will require them for you application and everything attaches to them. It depends on the leaf springs you are using. Basically you will need to mock it all up before permanently installing anything on...

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Shackles that Reverse on a Trailer Over Bumps
The equalizer on your trailer suspension needs to be able to move, you might have leaf springs that are too short or your spring hangers are too far apart. Typically when people have this problem the solution is to have the spring hangers brought in closer together.

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Equalizer that Tilts to One Side
Normally if the equalizer is tilted like what you have typically it's because the trailer is not sitting level. The side tilted up is typically pointed down towards the ground. It's hard to see in your picuture but it almost could be the case based on the angle of the frame and the ground in the background. Otherwise it indicates that either a leaf spring is too long or the center hanger is not properly located. I'd try measuring the distance between all of the hangers on one side of the...

  • Can a Cattle Trailer With 7,000Lb Torsion Axles Be Converted To Leaf Sprung Axles?
The Tandem-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit for Double-Eye Springs # APT8 can be used on your cattle trailer if you are changing from torsion springs to leaf spring axles. I can help you find the correct axles, hubs, brakes, leaf springs and any additional components you will need if you can provide me the frame measurements, axle hub face spread, wheel spacing front to rear. I have linked a help article below that will help cover all the parts that will be needed.

  • What is Needed to Add Second Axle
To add a second axle to your trailer, apart from the axle you'll need another set of hangers that need to be welded on, another leaf spring, four more U-bolts, an equalizer, four more shackle straps, and eight more shackle bolts. You'll have to measure your hangers for matching ones and reposition your current axle as well so I can't give you any specifics on what is needed. I will link below a number of help articles and our entire selection of suspension parts.

  • Solution for Slowing Corrosion Development on Trailer Suspension Comonents
This may seem silly but if you spray a lubricant like WD40 on the metal surfaces after cleaning them the oil will inhibit the ability of the water to contact the metal. Similar to how keeping a bike chain lubricated allows it to prevent rust development. But if you are dipping the trailer in salt water rust is basically inevitable.

  • How Tight to Get Shackle Bolts on Trailer Suspension
Yes when tightening the lock nuts of the shackles of the trailer suspension kits you want to tighten them down to the point that the bolt goes all the way through and the head is flush like you said. The nut only needs to be that tight as the suspension needs to be able to move without tension.

  • Can Longer Suspension Hangers Be Safely Used at Front of Suspension Instead of Middle
Yes, if you had the longer hangers from the kit # APT8 installed towards the front of your suspension instead of the middle then it will cause your trailer to ride weird and components will wear out prematurely. You'll need to place those longer hangers in the middle for the correct setup.

  • What Are The Two Upper Holes In Short Hangers In Tandem-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit APT8 For?
I am happy to help! Starting with the two holes in the shorter hangers included in the Tandem-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit for Double-Eye Springs - 2-1/2" Front/Rear, 4-1/2" Center # APT8 you were looking at. Those holes are not for bolting but instead are for plug welding the hanger to the frame if you choose. You could also just have the hanger welded all the way around. Moving on to the equalizers. The length of the equalizer are from center of one horizontal hole to the center of the other...

  • How to Determine Hanger Spacing on a Tandem Axle Trailer
It depends on the leaf springs you are using. Basically you will need to mock it all up before permanently installing anything on the trailer. Generally speaking the distance between hangers would likely be 24-3/4 inches on center to 29-1/2 inches on center but again it depends on the springs being used. These are just rough guide lines and really the only way to get the right spacing for a given trailer is to mock everything up and adjust as needed. Also, even though you asked about hanger...

  • Tandem Axle Boat Trailer Hanger Kit For Use With Salt Water
The hangers that come with the Tandem-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit # APT8 are going to be bare steel since they will need to be welded to the frame. This is how all hangers are going to come as they will need to be welded to the frame. Once you have them welded on I recommend having the hangers, straps and equalizers coated in a marine specific paint. This will help to resist the corrosive properties of the salt water.

There is no specific measurement for how tall your hangers should be. If you are replacing existing hangers then it is best to match the size of what you have now. If not then the # APT8 would work well. Another good option would be the # APT5 which is our most popular hanger kit. We also have a table showing distances between hangers based on different leaf springs for this particular kit to make things easier. • How to Find the Correct Replacement Equalizer
The Tandem-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit for Double Eye Springs # APT5 may have the correct equalizer but you will need to measure the current equalizer to find out. The length from the center of the left-most eye to the center of the right-most eye of your equalizer needs to be the same as the 7-3/4 inch measurement in this kit. Since you said the shackles are hitting the frame I recommend using a kit with a center hanger that is longer than the 3-3/4 inch hanger that comes with Kit # APT5....

  • Why is Center Hanger Longer for Tandem Axle Trailer Hanger Kit
The center hangers in the Tandem-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit # APT8 that you recently purchased are indeed longer. This is actually pretty common for tandem axle trailers. The reason for the extra length on the middle hanger is related to the shackle straps of the equalizer. You want this hanger to be a bit longer to compensate for how the shackle straps move the spring higher up. I have attached an image to better clarify this. It is possible for the shackle to flip like you described, but...

The Hanger Kit # APT3HD is going to be the closest we have to your current hangers. This kit does have the same 2-1/2" front and rear hangers as the Kit # APT8 you found but it has the taller 5-7/16" center hangers which is very close to your current 5-1/2" hangers. This slight difference in hanger size will result in a slightly higher trailer height likely only around 1/4". The old springs likely have more sag than that depending on the age of the trailer.
