How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

Video Transcript for etrailer Round A-Frame Trailer Jack Review TJA-2000-B

Today, we're going to look at the Round A-Frame Trailer Jack. Part number TJA-2000-B. Our jack here is a simple device that allows you to raise your trailer up and down off the hitch ball of your vehicle. You rotate the handle clockwise. This will lower the jack then it raises up. Counterclockwise retracts the jack so we lower it back down.

Now, our jack provides 14 1/4" of lift. You can see when it's fully retracted up here, it tucks up nice underneath the trailer here so you have plenty of clearance. We'll go ahead and run the jack down and we'll see it at it's opposite end. This is what a jack looks like when it's fully extended. Of course, you can add an accessory like a jack foot or a caster to the bottom of it. It's going to raise up just a little bit more.

If you want you can add a foot plate to the bottom, which we do recommend. That's part number JF-100-ZBK. There's also a removable 6" caster available for this jack as well. It's part number JC-102. When you use this part, you are limited to 1,200lbs.

The total weight of the jack, which is 2,000. This jack is designed for trailers that have about 2,000lb max tongue weight. Now I'm going to cover some of the details here. First off, the coating on our handle here is a zinc finish, which will protect the metal from the elements because this part actually gets beat up a lot more than the body of the jack. The body of the jack itself does have a powder coat finish that's also protecting. One neat little detail I like about this jack that you won't see on some other brands is that actually a simple nut and bolt assembly for the handle.

Some brands just have a rivet that goes through there and you have to cut it and grind it to take the whole thing off then just put another nut and bolt in there. This case there's a simple nut and bolt assembly and you use that to replace your handle. This jack is intended to work on a variety of A-Frame couplers that are out there, such as this one right here. It simple goes into the existing hole, and possibly another bracket if your trailer has below it. The hole that this fits into needs to be 2 1/4". Now we can install the fasteners. The jack does not come with any fasteners to install, but typically you're going to need a 3/8" diameter, grade five bolt, flat washer and a nut, or better yet a lock nut. Most jacks install with the bolt head right on top of the jack. Sometimes, the spacing seems a little big so if you want, it doesn't hurt to add a secondary washer on top. Typically, to tighten down our fasteners we'll need a 9/16" socket and a wrench. This place for a jack is pretty simple and we're already finished with it. In fact, you may have more problems removing the old jack before you put in your new jack. That'll finish it for the Round A-Frame Trailer Jack. Part number TJA-2000-B.

This was the smallest diameter and lightest duty I could find at etrailer. A bit large for this application but I squeezed it in and it does the job.

by:

Very happy with the purchase of this jack. This jack appears to be made by Ram and they make quality products. I have Ram A-Frame jacks on my other trailers as they have proven to be durable, well built and retain smooth action over years of use.

Great basic trailer jack, exactly what I needed. Fit and installed easily. But the best part is that etrailer shipped the unit the same day I ordered it, so I received it 2 days later, with no extra shipping charges! This is the 3rd time I have ordered from etrailer, and once again I find customer service you can trust, and parts on which you can rely.

We installed this longer reach jack on an off-road trailer we had been modifying with ease and when winterizing the camper we found it to be as smooth as when new. Bonus for New England use; it has not shown any rust or corrosion.

by:

I got exactly what I needed to repair my trailer - the lift and two lights. Products were delivered 2 days earlier than originally indicated. Everything was as expected. Great products and service

  • What is the Travel of the Round A-Frame Trailer Jack # TJA-2000-B
The 14-1/4 inch dimension mentioned on the Round A-Frame Trailer Jack # TJA-2000-B is the travel, or distance the jack's inner tube can move vertically. This fits the same 3 bolt style of jack mount that a Fulton would fit. I attached an install video for this jack as well.

  • Recommended Trailer Jack with Wheel for Pop-Up Camper
For the Atwood Round Trailer Jack AT80036 has been discontinued. If you want a different jack that will have a compatible wheel, I recommend the Round A-Frame Trailer Jack - Topwind - 14-1/4" Travel - 2,000 lbs # TJA-2000-B along with the Removable 6" Caster for 2-1/4" Trailer Jacks - Steel Caster - 1,200 lbs # JC-102.

  • Can the Inner Tube On An A-Frame Trailer Jack Be Replaced
In order to get your trailer up and running you will have no other option but to replace the entire trailer jack as the inner tube is not a replaceable part. I am sure you have seen a few of the drop legs on our site which are replaceable but this is a bit different than the actual inner tube although they do look similar. If you are looking for a cost effective replacement, I recommend the Round A-Frame Trailer Jack part # TJA-2000-B which has a 2,000 lb weight capacity but this only needs...
