Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Hi, coming from a person who has never installed a hub in my life, here's my feedback:
1. The printed instructions are atrocious. Keep it simple. I was more confused after I read the instructions. Make the instructions so simple that an 8th grader could follow them.
2. Make a video on putting together and installing a hub. Put the web address to the video in the printed instructions.
3. Include a cotter pin for the castle nut as a part of the kit. Luckily for me, I had a spare, but I didn't know that it didn't include it.

Purchase a pair of hubs and leaf springs plus assorted hardware for an old trailer restoration. The pricing was great and the quality and shipping were equally as good. The trailer is a 1999 Haulin which seen it's better days. Thanks to Etrailer, I was able to order everything I needed at one time.

by:

I've attached some pics of the smoker I'm building using the hubs and spindles I purchased from you. Thanks for the quick shipping. Hubs and spindles fit perfect.

by:

The hub seemed to be of very good quality. It shipped out and I received it very quickly. I have only one issue and that was the grease cap seemed a tad small and was extremely difficult to put on without damaging, but in all fairness that could be my lack of experience installing them rather than a product issue. before an after pictures attached

Very good service and fast delivery

The staff at e-trailer was very helpful and informative regarding their product. I learned several things about trailer equipment, in general from the staff, as well. I especially appreciated their efforts to assist me in solving a problem that arose several weeks after I had received the tires and wheels that I had ordered. The fix was to replace the existing hubs (4.5 inches) with new ones that were the standard 4.0 inch hubs.

I am still relying and using those products purchased from e-trailer.

I have a small 1200 lb Harbor Freight Tool trailer. The original bearings blew out and I had to replace the bearings, seal and hub. Went to our local Colorado Springs bearing supply house. I bought the hub, seal, bearings and cap for less that what they charged for one bearing, bought tires too - for less and better quality than what Discount Tire charged. Will be coming back

Hello, I also have a Harbor Freight trailer 1200 lb trailer. my hubs do not turn true. did you change just the bearing or the hubs too? I want to make sure these hubs fit this trailer?Jerry

Alex

Jerry M, In 2012 I replaced the spindle, bearings and tires on my Harbor Freight trailer. I had a local welder put the new spindles on the axle. Since this time, the trailer has remained true, no bearing issues, and no tire wear issues. Approx 2500 miles since then. Very happy with my decision to use eTrailer. Just wish they used FedEx and not UPS

by:

My old trailer hubs were made of cast iron and the cup portion was machined and impossible to keep smooth. The new hubs were machined for the cups and were already installed. Next time when I need to repack the hubs and inspect the bearings I will have the option of putting in new cups and cones making them new allover.
Thanks for a great product at a great price!!

With almost 1500 miles on the trailer I have had no issues with the hubs or bearings. I did learn to keep a log of the miles on my trailer so I can keep track when to do maintenance on the bearings.

Actually using this spindle and hub for a wind turbine. I have bought from etrailer over the years. Always satisfied. Good service and support. Good quality products like this Dexter spindle and hub. Quick delivery. Will come back!!!

Working well. I am very pleased with the Dexter products. I have used enough axles, hubs, bearings over the years to know it is worth it to seek out quality name brand components like Dexter.

by:

Received item very quickly. Noticed rust on the hub inner raceway. Contacted etrailer and a new part was sent immediately. Issued was handled as well as possible. I would purchase from etrailer again.

I recently purchased a set of hubs and bearings for my Jon Boat trailer. I purchased 4 on 4 hubs to put 4.80 X 12" tires on the trailer. Delivery was very fast. I received the hubs in two days.
However, the hubs and bearings I purchased would not fit the trailer axle.
I contacted etrailer.com and explained that the internal diameter of the bearings was much too small. The ID was 1" and the spindle of the axle was 1.25". They checked their inventory and could not find bearings with 1.25" ID. They agreed to allow me to return the hubs and bearings. However, after considerable looking I found that the axle is non-standard for this type of trailer and no one has hubs (4 on 4 for 4.80 X 12" tires) to fit the axle. I ended up purchasing a proper axle and installed the hubs I had purchased from etrailer.com. The people at etrailer.com were very considerate and helpful. I recommend them highly.

by:

The hubs and bearing fit my seadoo trailer great. The reason for one star down is that the grease seals were the wrong diameter to seal on my axle and seeing as how this was a Saturday and I was 125 miles from home (trying to get this trailer road ready) I had to buy seals from a local auto parts store at $8.00 each (prices suck when your out in the country without many choices).
Overall very pleased with the service and products.
I would definitely visit etrailer again for my trailer needs.

Parts fit perfectly and are made of good material, customer service with Nicole T was great . She was able to get me the right parts and super professional on helping me getting the right parts . Thank you

So far so good , working well . I lube the hubs once a year with marine grade lube

by:

The actual hub is of exceptional quality as it is a cast hub and is a giant improvement over the tubular steel w/welded on lug plate I took off. Was not impressed with the fact that the MFG did not pack these in a cardboard box and just wrapped all the parts around the hub with tape, paint job on the hub was not the greatest but did not matter to me as I repainted it a different color to compliment my new wheels, the dust cap is flimsy and easy to dent unless you cut a notch the width of a hacksaw blade 1/2 way to the stop ring but again did not matter to me for anything but to keep the paint off the bearing race as I used my old bearing buddies. The hub is of automotive quality and I give it a 10 for quality, cost, fit and my hat's off to the service at Etrailer.

by:

Ordering was fast and easy, shipping was quick. The Dexter hub kits were a good replacement for the boat trailer I put them on but the grease seals included in the hub kit were not the size I needed. I knew it when ordering so I just ordered the correct size seals at that time.
I've ordered from etrailer several times......never had an issue. Good customer service and support.

by:

My trailer had different sized hub which had me confused when trying to replace the bearings. The new hub fit and worked great and now it matches the other side.

by:

I am converting an old Coleman camper into a one room toy haler (model airplanes). The bearings in the wheels were shot. This pair of new hubs and bearings were cheaper then I could get the old hubs rebuilt locally. Also the old hubs had break drums I no longer needed. So the new hubs were lighter. Hubs look great and worked great. The new dust covers were not so great but my old caps worked. Shipping was unbelievable fast. All good stuff.

by:

Got these hubs last year. Hubs are still going strong and I don't have to worry about their dependability. Pulled the trailer up the mountain last Saturday to cut wood and back home without ANY worries. Excellent hubs!

Eric

by:

I needed to replace the hubs on my jon boat trailer. Etrailer had the exact hubs I needed, in stock. The description in their shopping cart made it easy to order the right part. They shipped promptly and I received the order within a few days. The hubs were well packed. Their quality is first rate. They even included bearings, seals, races which came installed in the hubs saving me some time (thank you!), and lug nuts at a price that was less than the bearings and seals alone were going to cost me at a local auto supply store. A diagram on their web site showed me how to install the innards and I installed both hubs on my trailer in a little over an hour. Thanks again, Etrailer.

by:

Great response time and follow-up. I ordered this hub assembly on a Friday and received it on Tuesday. Everything needed was in the package to replace a damaged hub and bearings on a small trailer a friend and I are rebuilding. I did find damage to one of the bearings when I received it. I called etrailer, spoke to Ashley and another bearing was shipped that day. If I need any other trailer parts etrailer will get my business.

by:

Many of my old garden tractors came with 8" rims and sealed wheel bearings, these bearings and small tires on a 1000 lb machine made steering hard and wore out bearings. I am in the process of converting many of them to 4 bolt hubs like this cast iron Dexter hub. They make steering with two fingers possible, great product for a upgrade on an old garden tractor, especially if you are going to add a loader or front plow

by:

Perfect replacement for my old ones with bad bearings. Could have replaced bearings and races, but for this price it wasn’t worth it.

by:

I'm modifying an old boat trailer to transport my HD Fat Boy. The price of e-Trailer's wheel hubs was so reasonable, I opted to replace my old ones. I was in no real hurry to receive them but the new hubs arrived promptly anyway and they were just as represented in the catalog. Upon installation, I sensed the need for a special washer between the outer bearing and the hub nut. Calling the 800 number, I received a prompt and detailed explanation. I couldn't be more pleased, because these folks really focus on customer satisfaction. Pap.

by:

Arrived quickly, and seems to be well made for the price. Bearings are made in China.

  • Does a Trailer Wheel Center Hole and a Hub Bore have to Match
The expert answer you have referenced is correct. A wheel that secures to the hub using bolts instead of lug nuts actually centers on the hub so the pilot hole of the wheel has to be exact. If it is too large the wheel can easily be off center and lead to all sorts of problems. Hub # 8-91-05UC1 has a center bore outer diameter of approximately 2.4375 inches; very close to 2.5 inches but not quite. If you use this hub and the wheels you are using have a pilot hole that is larger, it will...

For a hub with a 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern that can fit 13 inch wheels with the pilot diameter of 2.5 inches the part # 8-91-05UC1 would be what you would need. For a white rim to fit this the part # AM20222DX would work well. Then for a spindle for the hub to fit on you would want the part # TRU44FR.

We recommend tightening until the nut stops without added force and then backing it off one notch to fit the castle nut.
