Video Transcript for Dexter Axle Trailer Hubs and Drums - Hub with Integrated Drum - 8-276-5 Review

Today, we're going to take a quick look at Dexter Axles, Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly, part number 8-276-51. This hub and drum assembly has a capacity of 2200 pounds and it uses a 4 on 4 bolt pattern. There are four studs and if we're able to accurately measure from the center of one stud directly across to the center of the other stud, we get about 4 inches. Inside the hub bore, you'll find that the races are already pressed in. You will need to use a grease seal sold separately, part number 10-9 and two bearings also sold separately, part number L44649 and that will be your inner and outer bearing, and you also need to source the grease cap. Now, we'll take a look at the measurement inside.

We have an inner diameter of 7 inches. Our depth comes in at a little under 2 inches, which means this drum should be used with 7-inch by 1-3/4-inch brake assemblies. And that's it for our quick look at Dexter Axles, Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly, part number 8-276-5.

This hub and drum assembly was a perfect fit. I had no idea which one I needed. I called and talked to Ricky S. He told me exactly what I needed and got it ordered,

Drums installed easily, wheel bearing races not very good quality, had some pitting due to rust, Decided to install as I had a trip planned and didn't want to spend another weekend working on it. Hope it lasts.

All the parts I ordered were delivered in a timely manner, and seem to be high quality. They fit perfectly which really impressed me as many variations there are in these types of parts. I would definitely do business with etrailer.com again. Thanks.

  • How To Determine Axle Capacity of Trailer with 4 Lug Hubs with Brakes
The only way to know for sure is to check your bearings. That being said, the most common 4-bolt configuration is a 4 on 4 bolt pattern, which are typically found on 2,000 lb to 2,700 lb trailer axles. The only 4 on 4 bolt pattern hub and drum assemblies we carry are for 2,200 lb axles and use # L44649 inner/outer bearings. See below. Compatible with 7 inch x 1-1/4 inch electric and hydraulic brakes # 8-173-16UC3 - Includes bearings, races, grease seal, standard grease cap and lug nuts. #...

  • Adding Electric Brakes to 1999 Jayco Pop-Up Camper Trailer
Jayco offered its 1999 Pop-Up camper trailer with and without brakes. Typically pop-up campers are equipped with electric drum brakes. It is likely that the brakes are bad or there is a wiring issue on your 25 year old trailer. Hopefully you have a brake controller. If there was a wiring issue or if there were no brakes on the trailer at all, then the brake controller should have indicated so. First you want to determine if you have brakes or not (hub and drum vs. idler hubs). An idler...

  • Diameter Of Hub On Trailer Hub And Drums With 4 On 4 Bolt Pattern
I went to the warehouse and measured the hub on both the # 8-173-16UC3-EZ and the # 8-276-5 hub. The outside hub measurement for the 8-173-16UC3-EZ is 2.47-inches. The outside diameter of the hub for the # 8-276-5 hub measures 2.06 inches. Both of these hub assemblies have a 4 on 4-inch bolt pattern so I have attached a link to the tire/wheel combos with 4 on 4 bolt patterns you can check out.

  • Difference Between an Idler Hub and a Hub/Drum
The Dexter Trailer Hub Assembly you referenced, part # AKIHUB-440-2-1K is known as an idler hub. An idler is a hub that is no provisions for trailer brakes. It has no brake drum. Part # 8-276-5 is an example of a hub/ drum that has a brake drum that can be used with a brake assembly like part # 23-47. The # AKIHUB-440-2-1K would be an acceptable replacement for an idler hub with a 4-on-4 bolt pattern that uses # L44643 inner and outer wheel bearings.

  • Hub and Drum and Bearing Kit to go with 7 x 1-3/4 Inch Hydraulic Brake Assembly 23-399
I believe that in the question you are referring to the 1.64 measurement is on the brake mounting flange, # 4-34. The center hole of the brake assembly, # 23-399, is larger than this and that is normal so it doesn't sound like you have anything to worry about for that. The matching left hand brake assembly is # 23-398. For a hub and drum assembly you can use # 8-276-5 which has a 4 on 4 bolt pattern and you would use bearing kit # BK1-150. For a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern you can use hub...

  • Would Too Much Grease in a Trailer Hub Cause the Grease Caps to Fall Off
You just need to pack the bearings on hub and drum assembly # 8-276-5. There's no such thing as too much grease for bearings! If it is an EZ lube hub with a grease zerk fitting at the end of the spindle you will know there is enough grease once it starts oozing out. You would not pack grease in the hub otherwise and not in the drum since the brakes would not be able to grab with grease in the hub. Grease caps, dust caps, and bearing protectors have to be installed right to avoid losing...

  • Recommended Least Expensive Brakes For 2000 lb 2-Jetski Trailer
For your 2 jetski trailer, the least expensive way to add brakes is an electric brake. To do this, I recommend adding the Electric Trailer Brake Kit - 7" - Left and Right Hand Assemblies - 2,000 lbs # AKEBRK-2. This will mount to your axle flange using hardware # BRKH7. You will need a brake adjustment tool like # W80630 for this installation and maintenance. For your hubs, if you have 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern wheels, you will need # 8-276-5. If you have 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern...

  • Bolt Spacing of Dexter 7 Inch Brake Drum/Brake Assembly
If you're speaking of the wheel bolt pattern for the # 8-276-5 Dexter 2200 Brake Hub/Drum, it uses a 4 on 4 bolt pattern. If you're speaking of the # 23-398-399 brake assemblies you'd looked at, the wheel studs are 2-7/8 inches apart, center to center. I've provided a photo showing this.

  • Can Brakes be Added to an AL-KO Axle that Uses L44643 Inner and Outer Bearings
There are no brake drums or even disc brakes that will fit a spindle that uses L44643 inner and outer bearings. You would need to replace the axle if you wanted to add brakes. The good news is that you can get axles already set up with brakes. We carry some axles, see link, but if none match up to what you need then you would need to order one to your specifications from a local tractor or trailer supply store. If you go with electric brakes then the trailer will need to be fitted with...

  • Parts Needed to Add Brakes to Trailer with 2,200 lb Axles
I can't put a cart together but I can help you pick out the correct parts to add brakes to your trailer and they will all be on this page for you to easily add to your cart. The brake assemblies part # 23-47-48 that you referenced are correct for the 2,200 lb axle on your 2005 Aliner Sport. For a brake controller the P2 part # 90885 is a really solid option that works great and is very reliable. For a hub you would then need the part # 8-276-5 if you have a 4 lug wheel.

  • Can 7 x 1-1/4 Inch Electric Trailer Brakes be Used w/Hydraulic Brake Hub for 7 x 1-3/4 Inch Brakes
Hub and drum assembly # 8-276-5 is not a proper fit for 7 x 1-1/4 inch brake assemblies and should not be used with them. I know you are looking to save some money but believe me, you can spend a little now on the correct hub and drum assembly, # 8-173-16UC3, or a lot later after the additional length of the hub stress the bearings and spindles and you are looking at replacing the axles.

  • Comparing Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # 8-173-16UC3 with # 8-276-5
Basically, an electric brake assembly is going to be a 7 x 1-1/4 inch while a hydraulic brake assembly will be a 7 x 1-3/4 inch. If you are using electric brakes on the trailer, go with Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly, # 8-173-16UC3. For hydraulic drum brakes, use Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly, # 8-276-5.

  • Parts Needed to Add Hydraulic Brakes to Boat Trailer
I may have a solution for you, but you would need to verify the bearings that are in the hubs that are currently on your trailer and the pattern of the brake mounting flange on your axle; if there is not a brake mounting flange present then you would either need to replace the axle completely or have a brake mounting flange welded on to the axle. You can purchase a brake mounting flange and have a qualified welder weld them to the axle. When a brake mounting flange is welded to an axle,...
