I have a 2015 GMC Sierra 2500HD Diesel, towing a 2017 Pinnacle 36FBTS 5th. wheel. The Pinnacle has a standard drum braking system. On a long trip this year I cracked both rotors on my truck from over heating related to the Pinnacle's drum brakes failing to fully provide proper stopping.
I decided no more, and after much review I replaced the factory drum brakes with the Kodiak Discbrake system. (my first time ever doing something like this) In addition, one of the key items for me was a way not to replace my on-board factory trailer brake controller, (did not want to use an aftermarket product, that would diminish the interior look ) thus I also added the control Adapter Module that enabled me to use the factory installed brake controller. With all this change I decided to also go ahead and add a separate brake away battery. Everything I just described are shown in the attached photos.

I found eTrailer extremely helpful in answering questions, although I did not have a lot of questions since their online videos proved most helpful.

All parts of the Kodiak system worked fantastic following a 2500 mile trip. The improved braking is superior, and I did not need to replace my on board controller, but continued to use it by installing the control adapter. The disc brake picture is one of the disc brakes that I examined following our trip...all in perfect shape with everything working great for the entire trip.

I have received all my parts in a very timely manner. The product s were exactly what they were advertised as and the installation went well. Prices were very reasonable and was shipping.

by:

To be honest the quality of the product, just isn't there, though seems to be working as it should. The charge indicator seems a little weird, undetermined if it is working correctly, time will tell. will work to keep DOT off my tail.

by:

This was an exact replacement to my old unit. However the charge controller fried as soon as I connected the truck up. Had to swap out the control board from the old unit and working good now.

I have purchased all my needs through etrailer and always have a good experience. Was disappointed when the first brake-a-way kit failed like it did but you guys made it right and got a new one sent out.

by:

It was time to replace the existing, well worn breakaway controller and switch on my 28' enclosed tag trailer. The original controller's battery was dead, the wiring was suspect, and it didn't have the charging or test features the Tekonsha does.

It took about an hour to install, as I had to replace some old wiring. Without any fuss, it all went together quite simply, and I can test the system very easily with the push of a button.

by:

I ordered this as a direct form factor replacement for the unit on my trailer. I knew the battery I had was bad and the system had corroded at the battery terminals. However when it had functioned it worked wonderfully. The package arrived without a secondary shipping box and the box holding the battery and charger circuit board was broken and would not stay shut. Upon inspection all parts within the two products were identical and I proceeded to swap out all parts and reassemble in old case. I connected the tow vehicle for an overnight charge and proceeded on our scheduled trip the next day with no issues. I expect that in another few years of use that the battery will die since I live in the Mojave and the heat kills batteries. I would simply order this product again. If I needed a new case I would have asked e trailer for an exchange.

by:

Everything worked great. I was refurbishing a 1985 Hudson utility trailer. I have attached a picture of the finished product. Thank you for all your great products and support.

by:

A top notch product that works well and is priced right. Thanks etrailer!

by:

Product arrived quickly and was as described. One feature I especially liked is the light indicating that the device is being charged when 7-way connector is plugged into the tow vehicle. Included installation instructions were same as on the etrailer website and were not very useful. Wiring diagrams for other than the breakaway device itself were difficult to decipher. The installation video on the etrailer website, however, was easy to follow and left nothing unanswered.

Still working a designed, trailer parked for long periods, battery shows it’s holding a charge.

by:

Using this kit to power the LED interior lighting in my covered motorcycle trailer. Also powers a couple of LED ramp lights that can also function as backup lights when connected to the tow vehicle. Works like a charm! Thanks eTrailer, for the large selection of trailer parts and accessories... and the fast delivery.

Still going strong... more than enough amperage to fully light the trailer interior with LED fixtures for hours on end. Couldnt be happier! Checking battery charge with a push of a button is a nice extra.

by:

This product replaced an identical system purchased from eTrailer many years ago. The installation was simple and quick. My breakaway is now working!

One potential problem with this kit is noted, however. The instructions for the kit indicate that the battery should be kept cool and the battery life will be shortened for temps above 85. Unfortunately, here in Texas we have already had 50+ days over 100 degrees this year (2022), so this may explain why my previous breakaway system died. Perhaps the manufacturer should offer a rugged version that can handle our Texas temperatures!

by:

The kit was all I needed to replace my old unit. I am happy with the quality of the components. I would have given it 5 stars but the wiring diagram was printed for an electrician not a DIY trailer owner. Thanks

works correctly. green light every time I check it, yellow charging light when I hook up. Would buy this unit again.

by:

Great product. Looks great. Fairly easy to install. If using a junction box with this product you need to remember to hook one of the leads from the break away switch to the black wire as described. The other wire hooks to the blue break wire. At first I hooked to the blue from my truck, the blue from this battery pack, and the blue going to my brakes. After several hours of trying to figure out the error it threw on my brake contoller in my truck I took it to a trailer place where they had to do some trouble shooting of their own. They found that the lead from the break away switch needed to be spliced into the blue wire going to my brakes after the junction box to make it work properly. It can't be on the same terminal as the battery pack. Other than this little issue it has been great, hopefully I never need to find out how well it works on a run-a-way trailer!

by:

I installed this, a year ago, with no problems. I've never been in a situation where it should have triggered, but I've pulled the plug while I had a wheel jacked up and spinning and it's worked.

It still self-tests this spring as having a full charge despite a winter of sitting disconnected.

My only quibble is that it should be easier to remove the battery. I would have pulled the battery over the winter and put it on a trickle charger, but it looked like more of a hassle than I wanted to deal with.

Batteries wear out over time, and should always be easy to replace.

by:

I can only give this rating on the quality of the hardware because I never want to have to use it! Overall the product is well made with quality hardware components, a more than adequate sealed battery that came fully charged, and what appears to be 12AWG wiring where it needs to be to do the job the unit is intended for (lock the breaks in case of a breakaway). I bought this unit because I have a Tekonsha Brake Controller and I wanted to stay within the same product line.

by:

This product was just received, but it appears to be well made. Instructions were very clear, however I would suggest marking your trailer wire with colored tape prior to removing the original breakaway battery to avoid confusion.
In my case I did not want to drill additional holes in my trailer tongue due to the different configurations of battery box mounts.

Angela wit etrailer matched up the hole pattern within a few minutes and solved my issue.

by:

Nice kit that provides what you need for a break away system. Note that it comes with a switch -- you don't need to buy a separate one (as I did, ahem).

Mounts easily enough. I kinda wish the wires had been longer and the box was waterproof (or look like it would readily survive a rogue wave), but I just extended the wires myself and I'll be careful around water :)

by:

Item arrived with battery leaking so I could not use. etrailer rep resolved the problem fast with a total refund. Note this was not a vendor, rather a supplier problem. I was completely satisfied.

This product surprised me. The product is of higher quality that I expected and too good for the trailer it was purchased for! I would up swapping this unit into my enclosed trailer and taking the factor- installed unit from that for my open trailer!

Etrailer is my go-to for all my trailering needs.

According to my research, the OEM controller on your 2012 Ford truck is compatible with electric over hydraulic braking systems. You could use the Tekonsha P3, it's a great unit that works great and is very user friendly, but it's not necessary. You'll need to either disable the existing surge coupler by putting a bolt through from side to side to prevent the coupler from compressing or replace it. You'll need to choose the appropriate replacement coupler based on the dimensions of the...

Since you need a breakaway battery kit that is compatible with up to a triple axle trailer I recommend the Tekonsha # 50-85-313 because it has a built-in charger, is a top load so it's easy to read, comes with a test button, and is DOT compliant.
