Parts to Convert From Disc Brakes to Electric Trailer Brakes

Question:

converting a 2017 Loadrite 23T5701 to electric brakes. I have a 2017 Loadrite trailer, dual axle, model 23T5701CTG2. It has surge brakes and already has disc brakes on each hub. Can i convert that simply by changing the surge hub out to an electric over hydraulic actuator? I was considering the Titan BrakeRite EHB Electric-Hydraulic Actuator for Disc Brakes Item # T4813100. I am a mechanic and know brake systems. But, i want specific advice on doing this conversion. The boat and trailer weigh in at roughly 7,000 pounds

You can convert from hydraulic disc brakes to electric brakes, though an electric over hydraulic actuator won't be used. Electric trailer brakes fit inside a trailer hub and drum, so the first thing you will need to do is remove your idler hub and rotor and get the correct hub and drum.

To get the correct hub and drum, you need to know the weight rating of your axles, and also what bearings your current hub has. You will need to take apart your current hub assembly and look at the bearings themselves; wipe away the grease and you should be able to see the part number stamped directly on them.

If you are unable to find them, you need to use digital caliper and measure your spindle to the thousandths of an inch where the bearings and grease seal ride. You can use the photo I've attached to see exactly where you need to measure. Additionally, you need to know your hub's wheel bolt pattern; if you do not know what it is I have added a help article which details how you can find it, as well as a printable bolt hole template you can use.

Once you know that you can get the correct electric drum brakes that fit in the drum. For example, for 3,500 lb axles with a spindle that has inner bearing L68149 and outer bearing L44649 you could use the Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # AKHD-545-35-K with Electric Trailer Brake Kit # AKEBRK-35-SA.

The brakes would require Mounting Hardware # BRKH10B, and you would also need the Breakaway Kit # 50-85-313, and to convert your trailer to have a 7-way you would need Junction Box # 3375601100 and 7-Way RV Style Connector # HM20086, along with the appropriate amount of 10 Gauge Wire # 10-1-1.

Finally, you will need a trailer brake controller for your vehicle to activate the electric trailer brakes. I have added links below to a number of help articles and installs for you to check out, and if you can get back to me with information about your bearings/spindle measurements I can make some more specific recommendations for you.
