Hi there, travelers. Today on our 2019 Grand Design Momentum, we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install Tekonsha's trailer breakaway switch.Your breakaway switch is an essential safety device. If your trailer has trailer brakes, whether they're electronic or electric over hydraulic, you will want to have one of these installed because in the event you do have a catastrophic disconnect, the other end of the cable here is hooked to your vehicle, which will then pull our switch here and activate our trailer's brakes, helping you come to a safe stop. This is important not only for your safety, but for the safety of others around you.This breakaway switch is suitable for trailers with one to three axles. We've got ours installed on our three axle fifth wheel. Now if your trailer does have brakes but it doesn't have a battery on board, then I would recommend that you purchase the breakaway switch as a kit with the included battery.
The battery is going to be installed on your trailer with it, so that way in the event of that catastrophic disconnect, you still have power on your trailer to be able to apply the brakes. Your breakaway switch has to be hooked to power in order to tell the brakes to stop.It's a good idea to periodically check your breakaway switch to ensure that it's working properly. When you pull the pin, if you have electric brakes, you should hear a hum coming from the wheels, and if you have it jacked up, you should be able to feel that the brakes are applied and you can't turn the wheel. We have electric over hydraulic brakes here and you can hear our electric over hydraulic actuator applying right now, and then it shut off.This is our customer's factory breakaway switch, and when we test it out by pulling the pin, nothing happened. If you look here, you can see the contacts have melted to the pin here and they're not touching each other inside, so even though one wire was hooked to power, the other side that was supposed to go to the braking system to tell it to apply the brakes never received that because the switch didn't close.
So here's our damaged one. You can compare it to how it looks on our new one. We don't have those melted marks there, and here you can see the contacts inside are clearly touching one another, allowing that constant power to flow through the other side of the switch to activate our braking system. Put the pin in, and we spread the contacts apart so we're no longer activating the braking system.Your breakaway switch is held in place just by a single bolt. We used a self-tapping screw and we just ran it right into the side of our fifth wheel.
On our Momentum, we wired it up inside the junction box here just behind our king pin, and we hooked one wire to the black wire coming off of our seven-way. That's constant power. It's also hooked to the batteries inside of our Momentum so that way even if we're disconnected, we still have power there, and the other end connected to the breakaway connection from our electric over hydraulic actuator. Now if you just have regular electric brakes on your Momentum trailer, then you'll just hook the other wire from your breakaway switch to the brake signal output from your brake controller.And that completes our look at Tekonsha's trailer breakaway switch on our 2019 Grand Design Momentum.

This is second and same exact breakaway switch I am purchasing. First one broke after a few years. I noticed the loop on the nylon pin broke off and the pin was stuck inside the brake unit. If this one breaks, I’m done with this product.

Installed it on the tongue of my Cargo trailer RV conversion to used the on board battery to lock the brakes in case the trailer gets unhooked. I will be traveling cross country and many states require this be installed

Working on refurbishing the schools trailer. Previous issues with the electric emergency brake made for some interesting times on the freeways. Replaced the actuator with this unit and solved the problems!
This is what the trailer needed to fix the issue...
Easy install, pigtails were long enough splicing wasn't required. As always etrailer had the right part for a good price.

This looks like a very well made switch, of much higher quality than the original switch out on the RV when it was built by Forest River. That switch started smoking the first time I tried it out.

The switch still performs very well. Like many parts on most RVs, the break away switch system is poorly designed, and cheaply implemented what the hell good is it to lock up the brakes on a 5th wheel RV if it becomes disconnected from the truck? . But this switch does its job well, without smoking.
