Can a Trailer Break Away System be Tested with Trailer Connected to Tow Vehicle
Question:
I have read that some of the breakaway kits say not to push the check battery button while hooked to the trailer plug-in because it could cause damage to the brake controller. Is that true with the 50-85-313 kit? I have a 2007 Chevy 2500hd classic body style

You should always disconnect the trailer before testing a break away system, including # 50-85-313. Testing the system in this case means pulling the break away pin from the switch. The resulting charge from the break away battery could lead to back feeding on the brake output circuit back to the controller.
Some controllers have built in circuit protection to prevent damage to the controller. I would need to know the make and model of the controller to determine if it has that feature.
You would not want to push to test with the trailer connected to the tow vehicle because that could result in an inaccurate measurement of the charge level. I have included a link to the instructions for this system and some links on break away systems for you.
