Video Transcript for Review of CURT Trailer Breakaway Kit - Kit Only - C52041

Hello, everybody. This is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a look at this CURT Soft-Trac 1 Trailer Breakaway Kit. Now, this breakaway kit here will activate your trailer's electric brakes if the trailer disconnects from your vehicle, so it'll help prevent a trailer runaway situation. One note I do wanna mention is the breakaway system like this is required by law in most states for trailers that are equipped with electric brakes and have a gross trailer weight capacity of at least 3000 pounds. Application.

This will work on one to three axle trailers with electric brakes. Now, this will include everything shown here on the table. We'll start with the battery case with the battery inside of it. Comes with the breakaway switch right here. And then the mounting hardware you need.

The case it uses is a nice, weather resistant polyethylene case. Protects the battery from moisture debris. And when you pop the lid off, there's a little rubber gasket that runs all the way around, so that when you put your lid back on there and then use the four screws, that'll hold it into place. Now, if you notice for this video, I've taken the four screws out just to show you what's on the inside. And it is a lockable lid.

If you notice, right down here, there's a hole, an extra hole added. So you'll notice, when I pop off the lid, the holes in here and down there. So when you put that lid back in there, those holes line up, you can put a small padlock through there to lock it, prevent any theft. Now, the padlock is not included. We do sell that separately.

Now, this battery case can be mounted either a top load or a side load case, depending on how you position it. And they do give you mounting hardware for both positions. And what's nice about it, if you use it as a top load, gives you nice, easy access to the battery. And if you use it as a side load, same way. Just pop it off that way. Put that little rubber gasket back in there. Now, for a top load mount, you'll use these four long self-tapping screws. That'll be, you'll install it this way onto the trailer frame, and then you'll just drop these through like that. Comes through the bottom here, and there's two on each side to hold it in place to a top load mount. And then, if you're gonna use it as a side load mount, which would be like this, then what you're gonna do is use the two U-bolts that are included here with the hardware. And basically, these will just line up, go through like that. You'll do one on this side, put your nuts on there, and it'll hold it so you can access it from the side. Now, the battery on the inside right here, if we pop it out, it is a 12 volt five amp hour sealed lead acid battery. It has the red white wires on it. It just drops into place. And once you get it into place, the wires just come out a little hole there. Now, the breakaway switch right down here, this will install on your trailer's frame. Drilling is required. You just put a screw through there and attach it to the trailer frame. But basically, on this end, is a full four foot long lanyard that'll go and connect to the tow vehicle. And then the two wires on the other end here, there are black and a blue wire. Those will connect to the battery and to the trailer connector. Basically, the black wire will go to this red wire that's on the battery. The other white wire on the battery will go to the ground. And then the blue wire on this end will go to the brake control output that's on your trailer connector. Now, this kit is DOT, Department of Transportation, compliant. Last thing I'm gonna do is show you the dimensions of the case itself. Make sure everything's installed. We'll go ahead and give you the length. It's right at five inches. The width, which will be measured this way, including where the mounting tabs are, five and a quarter inches. And then the overall height is about three and three eighths inches tall. But that's gonna do it for the review on this CURT Soft-Trac 1Trailer Breakaway Kit.

very nice part easy to install

by:

Easiest and best upgrade to my boat trailer brakes. Would recommend to anyone.

by:

This was a replacement for an aging unit. Installation was straightforward. I hope to never need the unit as it would only come in to use in the event of a loose trailer so I cannot comment on it's function.

by:

Good breakaway switch, but no way to know whether the battery is fully charged.

by:

The u-bolts worked great for mounting the battery box on an electric tongue jack. I ended up heat shrinking the leads coming out and then siliconed the hole so no water could get in. I was not able to fully test the break away switch and stop the trailer with the battery but feel confident in the product.

by:

I also bought a new plug with attached junction box. The battery and charger were straight forward to wire. The only problem I had was that my old trailer wire colors did not match the new plug colors. Once I sorted out my wires everything worked well. I think it is a good battery kit

by:

HAD TO DRILL NEW HOLES BUT OTHERWISE INSTALL WAS EASY JUST CUT AND CRIMP WIRES USED HEAT SHRINK AND SEAL BUTT CONNECTORS.

by:

Good web site, good value, great instructional videos. Quick delivery!
Wish it had a battery stus indicator. Only one that fit the jack.

by:

Thank you Carol, the product was received today per the second order in excellent condition. I understand that things happen, the true value is how we handle adversity. I think that you and your team handled it very well and I received the parts in a very timely manor. Thank you so much.

  • Will Trailer Breakaway Battery Having Low Charge Cause Brakes to Stop Working
Trailer batteries (breakaway or auxiliary) do not have to be charged for the brakes to work with a brake controller when connected to a tow vehicle. You have two isolated problems possibility. A breakaway battery that won't hold it's charge and something preventing the brakes from working. For a new battery solution it's easiest to go with an...

This wire will keep a maintenance charge on the battery when connected to your vehicle. A white wire that will be the ground and...
