Video Transcript for Deka Wiring 12-2-1 Review

Today, we're going to review part number 12-2-1. This is the Deka Jacketed 12 Gauge 2 Wire Brake Wire. This is sold per foot. This duplex brake wire is made with 2 plastic insulated primary wires right here. You can see it at the end. They are laid parallel and they are covered with this high quality plastic jacket which protects the insulated conductors.

Now each conductor is color coated. You can see black and white. Usually when this is used on brake applications, the black would be your power, the white would be your ground. It gives nice, easy identification. This is designed for use with 50 volts or less. Now each wire gauge is a 12 gauge measurement and this wire is sold per foot.

As you can see right here, I do have 1 foot pulled off but you can order as many feet as you'd like. That should do it for the review on part number 12-2-1. This is the Deka Jacketed 12 Gauge 2 Wire Brake Wire sold per foot. .

Heavy duty wire for electric brakes. Many manufacturers of trailers use a light wire which doesn’t carry current very well.

by:

Forst of all,I received all items on time, and the packaging was undamaged as were the contents. The rims were exactly as I had hoped and I've already had the tires mounted on them. The electric brake wire looks great as well and will be perfect for my project.

by:

I have ordered several things from etrailer and have not yet been dis-satified . Everything is always as described and arrives in excellent condition For anything trailer these guys are the go to guys Prices are as good as it gets and many times with FREE shipping I have rebuilt several vintage trailers and etrailer has been my source for whatever I need to get it on the road and safe

by:

Item is as described. A high quality, heavy gauge, stranded, 2-conductor, jacketed cable.

by:

The only complaint I have is that my last few orders have been shipped by USPS instead of FEDEX or UPS. I was used to getting my orders much sooner than what the USPS is capable of.

by:

Received the items quickly but box and contents were damaged due to poor packaging, wheel bearings were put in a plastic bag and attached to the brake drums which when the load shifted around the 2 brake drums would contact each other and smash into the attached wheel bearing’s and damage them rendering them unusable, now I’ve got my trailer sitting on jack stands with the hubs removed waiting for a claim to be processed so I can get some new wheel bearings shipped to me so I can put everything back together. Come on guys you need to do better at packing things up.

Perfect for my trailer. The wire arrived on time and I’m very satisfied with Etrailer

by:

Good wire. I'll have to order more since I didn't order a long enough piece.

I Used this cable to connect the electric brakes to the 7 way connector on my trailer. The wires were all color-coded for easy identification.

This cable is durable with a strong outer jacket.

Odelia was phenomenal! 10/10 would reco mmend!

Used this wire to go from front of vehicle to rear, one conductor for the 12-Volt power, the other for the electric brake control.

I use one wire for 12-Vdc and do not use the second wire in the cable. I am using the Curt 7-way Bluetooth controller instead of a cabin mounted controller.

This wiring has held up phenomenally over the past year of installation. I have been underneath the vehicle changing parts and have inspected the insulation jacket while there. Everything looks as good as the day I installed it after a full year of use in Central New York weather. Would highly recommend.

Two years in and the wiring has been switched through three different vehicles and still holding up phenomenally! It was really worth its weight!

by:

Good quality
Affordable price

by:

etrailer has been my “go to” for a few years now. Communication is always a top priority and their customer service is second to none! Regarding this Echo, I use it all the time when pulling with our 2019 Subaru Accent and often use it on other vehicles that have older/delayed brake controllers.

by:

Excellent quality and strength. Why skimp on something as important as your hitch? I have purchased three of these Draw Tites - I guess a repeat customer will scream about the true quality a company can garner from repeat customers. When you pull show cars worth six figures, you can't afford a poorly made hitch.
Step up, step out, and don't fret what you are pulling.

by:

I am giving two stars, vs one star, because they did send what was ordered in a timely manner. That said, I will never order from etraler again. The complete lack of thought and concern for packaging the order was shocking. Two brake drum kits (we are talking at least 75 pounds total) were thrown into a larger box, along with 100' of loose brake wire and 4 un-packaged or boxed grease seals. There was zero protective packaging and the actual shipping box was of the same gauge/weight as the boxes the drums came in....medium duty corrugated cardboard at best. Needless to say, the shipping box was semi-opened when it arrived, and 3 of the 4 grease seals were missing. This whole situation was/is unacceptable.

by:

I needed to retrofit my twp axel trailer to get it state inspected. I bought everything I needed from etrailer. I love one stop shopping! I was very pleased with the delivery time and the high quality of parts I bought. The brakes work like a charm. The only thing that I would suggest for the company is to recommend break away automatic braking device when selling these brakes. It was required by law in Pa and I had to buy an automatic brake locally.
I would do business with these folks any day. I highly recommend.

by:

Top quality

by:

It is so nice to have wire that I know will be heavy enough and durable enough to actuate brakes to stop a tilt bed trailer with a tracked bobcat and accessories, about 11K pounds. The weenie wire that it replaced made me nervous every time I took the trailer out. Works well. I actually extended it to the second axle and capped it off to use on a future set of brakes for that axle (which I will certainly get from etrailer!)

by:

High quality wire. Has 12 gauge brake wire to supply full voltage to electric brakes.

by:

Used this cable to run power from a voltage reducer to an LED light bar on a 48V golf cart. Fit the bill of what I needed, looks to be good jacket, insulation and wire quality. Installed about 10 months ago and no issues.

by:

The wire was awesome to use to wire my trailer tail lights with.

Gpopp

The wire was installed on a 1960 TourAHome and is working well under the trailer, I have not noticed any weathering of the wiring jacket. I still have some in stock for future use.

by:

I wanted a jacketed wiring for a snowmobile trailer brakes to protect from the elements. Initially thought it was a little expensive, however it's a quality product and I appreciate being able to buy it by the foot.

by:

This is high-quality 12-gauge stranded wire of a size appropriate for single-axle trailer brakes, though it only carries the current for one magnet (over from the other side). That other side uses the 10-gauge size of this wire up to the tow vehicle plug. This wire has a high-quality outer protective sheathing to resist abrasion and weathering. Remember to solder and weatherproof all your splices! Wire nuts or Scotch-Locs are not appropriate for use in trailer brakes systems!

by:

E trailer did a fantastic job.
Before
order: Technical support / help was excellent.
Goal, conversion of a 1998 Floe snowmobile trailer from surge to electric brakes.
Problem, due to time and corrosion, I could only supply partial part numbers, spindle diameter.
etrailer did a fantastic job, researching, and getting me the correct part numbers, so I could order.
Julie did a great job.
She was very timely, communicated clearly and honestly, and just “kept me in the loop”.

I received the order came on the projected date, complete and undamaged. Excellent.
I would highly recommend etrailer, for your part needs.

  • Will 30 Feet of # 12-2-1 Deka Wire be One Wire
When you order 30 feet of # 12-2-1 we cut it to length in our own warehouse so it's going to be one 30 foot wire and not several shorter wires cut into pieces.

  • Solution for Carefree Colorado Travel-R Awning that Needs Replacement Jacketed 14 Gauge Wire
We have a pretty close option with the Jacketed 12 gauge wire part # 12-2-1 which we offer by the foot. This would work great to replace a double bonded 14 gauge wire setup. The slightly thicker core of the 12 gauge wire compared to 14 would not cause any issues. It's typically only ever going to be an issue if you were to go to slightly thinner gauge wire and not thicker like what I mentioned.

  • Is the Jacketed 2 Wire # 12-2-1 Copper or Aluminum Wire?
The Jacketed 2 Wire # 12-2-1 contains copper wires. The copper is annealed which can sometimes give it some discoloration which is why it looks more aluminum in the image.

  • What Gauge Wire Should Be Used to Wire Up Trailer Brake Assemblies
If it were me I would go with 10 gauge wire. For that you would want part # 10-2-1. Some people use 12 gauge wire and have success, but honestly I would rather have to heavy of gauge wire than not heavy enough. So to be on the safe side I would go with the 10 gauge. The 10-2-1 is sold by the foot, so you will need to order a quantity of how many feet you would need. I attached an FAQ on trailer wiring for you to check out as well.

  • Which Wire Sized Should be Used for Electric Trailer Brakes
You should use 10 gauge wire for electric brakes which is pretty much the standard size for electric braking applications because it can handle the amperage better over the long distance from a brake controller to the electric brakes. For a nice duplex cable with two 10 gauge wires you can use # 10-2-1 which is sold by the foot. I have also included a link to our help article on adding electric drum brakes to a trailer.

  • What Wire Gauge Should be Used for Electric Trailer Brakes?
It would be fine to use either 12 gauge wire # 12-2-1 or 10 gauge wire # 10-1-1. However, we generally recommend using the 10 gauge wire for running the 12V power to your electric brake to avoid the wire potentially overheating.

  • Troubleshooting an OS and a CS Code On Electric Brake Controller
On the Valley Journey brake controller, the OC code indicates that the manual override lever is being applied and there is no trailer connected. The CS code indicates there is a detected short circuit. Often the cause of this is corrosion at the trailer connector. Check the vehicle side and the trailer side for corrosion. If corrosion isn't the issue, then I would start on the vehicle side. First, do you have those codes without a trailer connected? If not, then we know the problem...

It sounds like the left side may have a bad ground in the system or a loose ground. I would check over the complete wiring system and make sure all grounds have a good metal contact and no rust. Also check the wires to make sure the protective coating is not worn and that there are no bare wires exposed. The connector from the vehicle to the trailer could also be corroded, you will want to check inside the connector to make sure. If there is not corrosion, it would be a good idea...

  • Why Use 10-Gauge Wire # 10-2-1 Rather Than 12-Gauge # 12-2-1 for Electric Trailer Brake Circuits
You are correct that Deka Jacketed 7-Wire # DW04914-1 uses 12-gauge conductors for all but the ground wire, which is 10-gauge. There are several variables with trailer brake wiring that we generally do not know when our customers ask about the wire gauge that should be used for re-wiring a trailer's electric brakes. The length of the trailer (and the required wiring) and the number of axles (and brake assemblies) can vary and when we do not know all of the particulars for every installation...

  • Recommended Junction Box For Individual Trailer Brake Wiring
My recommendation for the junction box is the Pollak 10 terminal Junction Box, # PK52248. This will give you individual terminals for your 8 contacts. I'd suggest using the other two for a hot supply line and a ground line so you can just add jumper wires within the junction box itself. Your application will be a customized one, but this additional junction box will allow you to have the simple troubleshooting you desire. I would not go smaller than 12 gauge wire for trailer brakes,...
