Video Transcript for Tekonsha Trailer Breakaway Kit - Kit Only - 1026 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at part number one zero two six. This is the Tekonsha Trailer Breakaway Kit with a clamp-on design. The electronic breakaway kit is going to feature a rechargeable sealed maintenance-free battery for trouble-free towing. This breakaway kit is designed to bring trailers safely to a stop by activating the breaks should the trailer become disconnected while you're driving down the road. It's going to come with the battery case, has the mounting bracket attached to the back of it. It's going to come with a twelve-volt sealed rechargeable four amp battery. It's going to come with the breakaway switch.

It's going to have the wires on this side. One wire gets ran to the twelve volt battery that it comes with in the kit. The other one's going to get ran to the trailer breaks, and then it's going to have the breakaway cable. One end stays attached to the switch, the other end gets attached to the vehicle that's towing the trailer. It's also going to come with a set of detailed instructions.

Those are going to walk you through the installation process step by step, and it's got a nice wiring diagram in there so it makes it fairly simple to get everything connected according to the instructions. Now this is for use with all single, tandem, and tri axle breakaway applications. It's going to offer a quick and easy installation. It's going to be weather and corrosion resistant. And it meets or exceeds the Department of Transportation's specifications for trailer breakaway and holding requirements. Now most states require a breakaway switch with a separate power supply when towing a trailer.

This one right here, again, here on the back of the battery box, we have have the clamp-on box design. It's got the hardware right there. You can mount this to the trailer jack or to your trailer frame. Basically once your box is mounted, one end of the box is going to lift up, this end right here, and your battery would drop right into position, just right inside here. It's a nice, secure fit.

It's got this little slit here on the backside where your wires will come out. I do need to mention that the easy connect right here, these are included. They just go over the terminals here on your battery that's supplied, but the wiring to charge the battery is sold separately, and you can find that on our website with part number one zero two four. So once you have your battery in here, your wires run out the side, now you can close the lid of the battery case. Again, this would be mounted onto your trailer. Once you have this attached, this is also going to attach to your trailer. One wire is going to run to your trailer brakes. The other wire's going to run to the power supply, which is the battery that comes with the kit. This part of the cable is going to attach to your vehicle, so what happens is, if you get into a situation where your safety chains don't work, let's say the trailer breaks away from the vehicle that's towing it. Since this would be connected to the trailer, and just the end of the cable would be connected to the vehicle, it's going to pull the plug out of the breakaway switch, which is going to activate your trailer brakes, which would bring your trailer to a nice, safe stop, which ultimately is going to prevent a trailer runaway situation. So these systems are great to have in place. Again, they are required in most states, so you just need to check your requirements. And this would be a good fit for you. It would be a good application to have. And it's all about safety. That's going to do it for our review of part number one zero two six. This is the Tekonsha Trailer Breakaway Kit. .

I installed this breakaway battery kit, along with a Hydrastar Electric-over-Hydraulic controller, and a new trailer tongue and wiring pigtail with junction box. This guy was a snap to install, but because it's me, I also installed a couple of self-tapping screws to anchor the mount. I do wish there was a complete wiring schematic for the whole system: controller, battery system, trailer wiring, and new 7 prong wiring pigtail with a junction box, or at least one that shows the pigtail, controller, and battery system. All in all, a great product, and the service, as always, was excellent.

super fast shipping. exactly what was needed to get my flatbed trailer back on the road. Prices were great and customer support is fantastic. thanks for all the help and great products.

Product works great, but doesn't include the inline charger to prevent over charging when connected to the tow vehicle. I'm not sure that it is necessary, but I found one at NAPA for $6. It was my fault for not looking carefully enough at the description.

this product is just like the old one, but, 20 years newer. goes right on, with a shorter mounting bolt. the long one just looks bad. interesting that it was made in the usa. thank you for your fast service.

  • Correcting Dead Battery in Trailer Breakaway System
Chances are that your breakaway battery fully discharged during the overnight period when it was accidentally engaged. Breakaway batteries are rated to deliver 15-minutes of power in an emergency stop. You can try re-charging it with a battery charger like # CTEK56353 from CTEK. I own one of their chargers and it does a good job on my mower and motorcycle batteries. If a charge does not correct the problem then you can use Replacement Sealed Lead Acid Battery # TK2023 or Replacement Breakaway...

  • Parts Needed to Add Headlight, Battery and Wiring to Adult Trike
It is certainly possible to add a 12V battery, wiring and lights to your adult trike to make it easier to see. This will probably be easiest if the bike has a basket or other cargo carrying part to store the battery. That battery needs to be rated for enough amp-hours to power the specific light for the period of time you plan to use it. The batteries we offer are trailer breakaway batteries like # HM20008. We also have kits with a battery box too, like # 1026. I suggest high-efficiency...

  • Resetting Breakaway Switch on Trailer to Allow Brakes to Release
Pushing the pin back into the breakaway switch should allow the brakes of the trailer to release. You may have to back the trailer up slightly to get the brakes to release. If you have tried that and are still having problems you may need to replace the switch with something like the part # 3802348.
