12 Inch Trailer Brakes for 5-Bolt Mounting Flange and How to Determine Correct Bearings
Question:
Hi, I have a M101A2 military trailer and I want to swap my surge hydraulic brake for one of your electric systems. My hub is 12 interior and the backing plate has 5 bolts. If I buy an electric brake assembly, will it fit in my actual hub? I also want to change my bearing, do you know what model my trailer need? Or I have to bring them physically in a shop? Thank you very much!

Let's start with the brakes, and we do have electric brakes that fit a 12 inch diameter hub and a 5-bolt brake mounting flange, the Electric Trailer Brake Kit # AKEBRK-7-SA. These are 12 inches in diameter x 2 inches wide so that's what your drum would need to be, and are designed to work for 5,200 lbs, 6,000 lbs, and 7,000 lbs axles so you'll want to verify that's what you have.
To mount them you will need the Mounting Hardware # BRKH12, and I have added a link below to a video install for you to check out as well if you'd like of the Electric Trailer Brake Kit # AKEBRK-7-SA.
Since you are transitioning to electric brakes, if you don't have the wiring and other components you will also need the Tekonsha Push-To-Test Trailer Breakaway Kit # 50-85-313, Junction Box # 3375601100, 7-Way Connector # H20046, Ring Terminals # 44-5310A, 2-Wire 10 Gauge Brake Wire # 10-2-1 and Butt Connectors # DW05745-10.
In regard to the bearings, you will need to take apart your hub assembly and look at the bearings themselves; wipe away the grease and you should be able to see the part number stamped directly on them. If you are unable to find them, you need to use digital caliper and measure your spindle to the thousandths of an inch where the bearings ride. You can use the photo I've attached to see exactly where you need to measure, and I've added a link below to our selection of bearings and bearing kits.
