Note: Do not power wash the Hydrastar actuator or take it through a commercial car wash. High-pressure water may damage the seals on the actuator.

The Hydrastar electric-over-hydraulic trailer brake actuator applies pressure to your trailer's hydraulic brake system in response to the electrical signals sent from your in-cab brake controller. As a result, your trailer's hydraulic brakes will be activated every time you apply the brakes in your vehicle or press the manual override on your controller. This setup is ideal for boat trailers because you will get responsive hydraulic braking, which you control conveniently from inside your vehicle with your electric brake controller.

Hydrastar Electric-Over-Hydraulic Actuator vs. Standard Surge Brake Actuators

With the Hydrastar electric-over-hydraulic actuator, you can get all the benefits of towing with an electric brake controller while using hydraulic brakes. Because this actuator will activate according to the settings you have chosen for your brake controller (sold separately), you will have more control over when and how your trailer brakes engage. Depending on the features of your brake controller, you may be able to control both the rate and intensity with which your trailer's brakes activate. You can also use the manual override on your brake controller, which allows you to engage the trailer brakes without having to apply the brakes in your vehicle. And perhaps most impressive, if you have a proportional brake controller, your brakes will be activated with an intensity that matches the braking speed and power of your rig.

This pump-and-motor-based system increases response time compared with traditional actuators because the trailer brakes are triggered when you apply the brakes in the tow vehicle, as opposed to when the trailer pushes against the hitch ball. This not only gives you faster, more efficient braking, but it also eliminates the pushing sensation that occurs in setups that use standard surge brake actuators.

Hydrastar actuators are also beneficial because, unlike standard surge couplers, they allow you to activate your brakes when reversing down an incline, such as a boat ramp. Having the ability to brake in reverse gives you more control and prevents wear on your tow vehicle.

Hydrastar Installation

Hydrastar Installation Diagram

This Hydrastar electric-over-hydraulic brake actuator will give you years of trailer-stopping performance. The actuator mounts on your trailer's frame with the included hardware. Then it splices into the trailer's wiring and connects to your hydraulic brake lines from the 3/16" female port. Lines and fittings are sold separately.

Durable Construction

Just like other Hydrastar electric-over-hydraulic actuator models, this system is built of extruded anodized aluminum for excellent corrosion resistance. In addition, the weathertight seals protect internal components from the elements.

This actuator also has a vented end plate that releases pressure, moisture, and heat to help prevent any internal damage. Unlike models that are unable to release heat and pressure, this vented actuator can be safely mounted inside of a compartment on your trailer. As a result, this actuator is great for gooseneck and fifth-wheel trailers where finding space on the tongue can be nearly impossible.

Brake Controller Compatibility

Not all electric trailer brake controllers will work with this electric-over-hydraulic brake actuator. See the following table to determine compatibility with common models of brake controllers. For best performance, it is recommended that you use an aftermarket electric brake controller rather than an OEM factory-installed controller.

The controller is still working. It tends to run at a low rate even when we're not braking, but perhaps it's something with our pickup or trailer wiring.

Been a year, haven't had one issues, very easy install. I went with the hydrastar unit so that i could utilize the brakes from a rear dana 60 axle, from a old service truck that i made into a trailer. The brakes function great. I recommend this unit to any one that is looking for a good solution to trailer braking using hydraulics, this system will also replace a surge brake system and operate much better. etrailer also had great follow up and customer care to see if I was satisfied with the unit which I am!

by:

Very good product, it works well with my trailer. Much better than electric drum brakes. Only down fall is I found it is sensitive to voltage spikes. I had a faulty alternator and the control board in the unit burnt out. Somewhat disappointed that replacement parts were not available to repair my current unit. Had to replace that whole unit just for a small circuit board. Great unit otherwise as far as function.

by: 03/02/2021

Great product. Low maintenance. Small enough to put in almost any location. I put mine in a side tool box just above my trailer axles. Breaks engage as soon as pedal is engaged.

by:

I have a tandem axle dump trailer that came with factory hydraulic surge brakes. They worked sporatically at best, were very unpredictable, and eventually stopped working all together.
I installed the hba 10 as well as an electric breakaway switch and eliminated the surge hitch all together.
Works great. Far beyond my expectations.

by:

Perfect! Exactly what we needed to complete the job.

by:

I’ve been installing these HBA - 10 actuators on new trailers for a year now and they have been working great.

by:

Still working as it should, no problems with the actuator. Completely satisfied! If only the rest of my braking system were as trouble free!

I am happy with the actuator and how well it is working

by:

This company is excellent! They have things I didn’t
even know I needed. Quick turn around time. Couldn’t be easier to get lights, hitches, jacks, brake controls (electric or electric over hydraulic). Been using this company for years and never had a problem.

by:

I just got it put on the trailer so really haven't had a chance to try it .
The part went on the 3 horse living quarters trailer which I hope to pull later today. The brakes activated properly, bleeding process was certainly a two man operation and took quite a bit of time.

Have Hydrastar HBA12 1200psiG7 on tandem boat trailer. Breakaway activates brakes well but brakes activated thru vehicle do not work.A check of power from vehicle to trailer indicates circuits are all good. Can hear contact noise from inside brake unit but pump doesnt start but thru breakaway activation the pump works well.Have been told the fault is in the Electronic Chip that activates the pump. Is this correct and if so can I purchase that part only? What part number do I order? Appreciate your reply. John B

What brake controller do you have installed in the vehicle? Not all brake controllers will properly operate an electric over hydraulic actuator pump. Some require a different mode or setting to accomplish such. It also may be good to make sure the system is wired properly. Check out the wiring diagram towards the bottom of the page on the HBA-16 actuator.

I was pleased with my purchase and the timely manner in which it arrived. The packaging was damaged so I was skeptical whether the product would be as well.

by:

awesome product, I have installed 4 more for customers,, works great, very easy to install and do away with surge brakes,, its a 5 out of 5 ,,, ill be buying more

by:

Received our order today. It was delivered quickly and in great condition. Obviously we haven't had a chance to install nor use it yet so I can't speak to the review of that. But I will say that Cailee and etrailer did a fantastic job of getting what we needed to us asap! Thank you Cailee!

  • 2014 Ram Factory Brake Control Not Compatible with 5th Wheel Trailer Electric Over Hydraulic Brakes
The 2014 Ram owner's manual states that the factory brake controller only works with newer electric over hydraulic braking systems. They do not provide a year range for what constitutes as newer though so we can only assume that it is 2013 and newer systems. I assume that you have tried to use the electric over hydraulic mode on the brake controller but it did not work. There are some actuators known to have problems interacting with factory integrated brake controllers as well, such as...

  • Converting Hydraulic Brakes to Electric Over Hydraulic Brakes Pulled by 2012 Ram 1500
For an electric over hydraulic actuator, I recommend a Cargo Towing Solutions HydraStar Electric-Hydraulic Brake Actuator. If you have disc brakes, you will want part # HBA16. For drum brakes, you will want # HBA-10. If you have a factory brake controller in your 2012 Ram 1500, you will want the # HBA-CAM adapter for the HydraStar Brake Actuator. The actuator isn't compatible with the factory brake controller installed in 2010 and later Rams without the adapter. Both disk and drum brake...

The factory brake controller on your F350 isn't compatible with electric over hydraulic brake actuators, which explains why the trailer brakes aren't operating with the brake pedal. You have two options for getting the vehicle and the electric/hydraulic actuator on the trailer to work together. If your Hydrastar is a Generation 6 or newer model with a serial number of 313800 OR HIGHER, the # HBA-CAM would work for you. As an alternative, you could use an aftermarket brake controller...

Yes, I checked with Carlisle and they confirmed that the Carlisle HydraStar Electric-Over-Hydraulic Actuator part # HBA-10 will work with the integrated brake controller of your 2014 Ford F-350. You would not need a reverse lock-out solenoid either as they are only needed on trailers with surge brakes. That is one of the advantages to an electric over hydraulic system is that you do not have to mess with any of that. The body of the # HBA-10 is made of extruded aluminum so it will be...

  • Why Would Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator Power On But Not Work with Brake Application
Most likely the brake controller you are using is not compatible with electric over hydraulic brake setups or it's not set in hydraulic mode. Since most controllers aren't compatible with this type of brakes most likely you'll need to install a new controller like the Prodigy P2 part # 90885 which would work well. It's also proportional which means it senses how hard you are applying the trailer brakes and applies a proportional amount of trailer brakes as well.
