Video Transcript for Redline Trailer Brakes 4-35 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at a brake mounting flange for a 2 3/8" round axle. This trailer brake mounting flange gets welded to the end of the axle beam to provide a secure mounting place and support for the brake assembly. This part number includes one brake mounting flange. It's for use with a 10" brake assembly. The center hole diameter, that pilot hole. That's going to give us a diameter of 2.27".

You can see that's going to contain four bolt holes. These are going to be separated apart from one another on center by 2 7/8", and that's going to be the same separation for each one. That's a square design. It's a steel construction that has a thickness of about 1/4". Overall measurements going edge to edge this direction. It's going to measure 3 3/4", and again it's a square design so it's going to measure the same going in this direction, 3 3/4".

That's going to do it for today's look at the brake mounting flange for a 2 3/8" round axle.

I wanted to install brakes on my enclosed trailer, but the axle didn't have the flange to mount the backing plates. These flanges had the correct bolt pattern for the brake backing plates and the correct center hole to slide over the machined area on the 3500 lb axle, for an easy weld-on upgrade.

Service was good and shipment was rite on time. One of the grease seals was bent in the shipment but I think it will work time will only tell. I was hoping that Dexter being made in America that they would use American made bearing also, they don't . The only other thing was I Thought I was getting bearing buddies but after looking back at the description I see that it wasn't , that is my mistake for not knowing better. I would have saved 18 dollars being I used my old grease caps instead. But over all I will use this company again great service. Keep up the great work.

  • Recommendation For Replacement For Brake Mounting Flange
I have brake mounting flanges that will work for you. We have several different types and sizes so you will need to find the right size and then have it welded on by a licensed professional welder. For example, for a 2-3/8 inch round axle we carry a Redline Brake Mounting Flange, Item # 4-35. I am attaching a link to an article, a video, and our available inventory for you to check out.

  • Determining the Axle Capacity of a 2 Inch Square Trailer Axle
The only way to know for sure is to find a stamp or plate somewhere on the axle with its capacity. If this isn't available you can use the bearing numbers to determine which spindles the trailer has and we can determine the capacities of the hubs that will fit. Another possible thing to check is if the axle has brake flanges how many bolt holes does the flange have? a 4 bolt flange it's likely a 3,500 pound axle or smaller. A 5 bolt flange is usually a 4,400 pound axle or larger.

  • Are Specs Available for Welding on a Brake Mounting Flange to a Trailer Spindle
There is a special jig required to weld on brake mounting flanges such as # 4-35. The flange needs to be welded on concentric and square. Square meaning the flange must be a true 90 degrees from the spindle and concentric meaning the gap around the spindle must be the same 360 degrees around. If not, the brakes will not wear evenly and will cause reduced braking performance. If not at the right depth the brakes will not be as effective and again, wear unevenly. Ideally you would take...

  • Is there a Brake Mounting Flange for a Square 3500 Pound Trailer Axle
When square axles are made brake mounting flanges with round holes are still used. It may require some additional steel when welding but your best option is # 4-35. Keep in mind that welding on a brake mounting flange properly requires a special jig and someone with experience in welding them on to ensure they are perfectly straight and concentric. Otherwise it can lead to all sorts of brake, tire, and other issues.

  • How To Determine What is Needed To Add Electric Brakes To Enclosed Trailer
In order to add electric brakes to your trailer there are a few things needed. I have attached a link to a helpful article that explains how to add electric brakes to a trailer an what is needed. Some of the things you will need to know are the weight capacity of the axle(s), and if the axle has a brake mounting flange installed, similar to part # 4-35. If there is no brake mounting flange on the axle, you will need to have one welded on by a certified professional. You will then want...

  • How to Find a Brake Mounting Flange for an 8 inch Rotor
To find out if the Redline Brake Mounting Flange # 4-35 that you referenced will work for your application you will just need to take a few simple measurements. This mounting flange fits 2-3/8 inch round axles and will be welded to the axle. The bolt hole pattern that you will need to match to your brakes is 2-7/8 inches center-on-center as is demonstrated in the attached video and picture. If your axle is a different diameter just let me know what it is and what your brake/rotor bolt...

The Electric Trailer Brake Kit part # AKEBRK-35 are designed to be used with 3,500 lb. axles with 10-1/2" x 2-1/4" brake drums. In order to determine if these brakes will fit your trailer axle. You will need to do a bit of measuring. The brakes fit axles that have a 2-3/8" diameter, hubs compatible with 10" brakes and a 4-bolt brake mounting flange. Capacity is what will have the capacity as opposed to the spindle, and the correct brake mounting flange will depend on the diameter of your axle. Since you mentioned a 3,500 lbs I assume that is your axle's capacity and typically those have 2-3/8" diameters. For that there is the Brake Mounting Flange for 2-3/8" Round Axle # 4-35. We don't have any flanges for 2" axles, but the other possibility is the Brake Mounting Flange for 1-3/4" Round Trailer Axles # 4-34 which is the typical diameter...

  • Recommendation for Installation of a Brake Mounting Flange on a Trailer Spindle and Axle
Welding a mounting flange, possible item # 4-35, is a very precise installation. The flanges need to be installed square and concentric to the hub and drum assembly and each other. If the flange is installed incorrectly rapid brake lining wear, improper braking, trailer dog legging, bearing failure, rapid tire wear and, worst of all, weakening of the axle can occur. Usually special jigs are used to install the flange. The jig will keep the flange square and concentric to the axle and...

  • Replacement Brake Mounting Flange and Assemblies for 2003 Wehaul Snowmobile Trailer
Most likely what you need for a brake flange is the part # 4-35 which has the standard 4 on 2-7/8 inch bolt pattern measured on center but you should measure yours again to be sure. This is a very common bolt pattern whereas 3 inches is not an option that we carry. This also fits the standard 3,500 l trailer axle diameter of 2-3/8 inches. So based on that the assembly set that you'd need is the part # AKEBRK-35-SA. This is a self adjusting set of brakes that fits a 10 inch hub/drum.

It sounds like your brake flange is likely the standard size and you will simply use standard 10 inch brake assemblies like # AKEBRK-35. There is not a 9 inch assembly or any other assembly that will fit 3 inch on center flanges, so I hope you have the standard 2-7/8 inch flange.

  • Trailer Brake Mounting Hole Pattern is Not the Same as Drum Bolt Pattern
The bolt pattern of the drum has nothing to do with the mounting pattern of a brake assembly. The drum bolt pattern is going to have to match the wheels you are using. The brake mounting pattern needs to match the flange that it bolts to. There are 2 common brake mounting hole patterns; a 5-hole and a 4-hole. The 5-hole version looks like # 4-44-1. The 4-hole looks like # 4-35. etrailer brake assembly # AKFBBRK-35R-D uses the 4-hole pattern. So if you look at your brake mounting flange...
