Determining If Hydraulic Disc Brakes Can Be Added To Boat Trailer With 4200lb Axle

Question:

Wanting to add disk brake system to a boat trailer. My axle GAWR is 4200lbs and I have 15 X 6J rims. Is there a manner to upload some pictures. The flange on the axle appears set back and the fender wells dont seem to allow for much lateral movement to keep wheel centered in the fender. I’d really like to go electric instead of altering the tongue / ball hitch but understand the advantages of disks / hydraulic for a heavy boat. Also, drums, electric with water, and drum maintenance is a consideration. Thanks in advance for you time.

I would be happy to go over the options for your boat trailer.

Since your trailer does not have much room between the outside edge of the tire and the fender I do not recommend going with a slip on rotor system as it will add space the wheel further out and will likely contact the fenders.

Starting with a hydraulic disc brake option you will need to remove one of your current hubs and identify the bearing combination your spindle uses by looking for the bearing numbers stamped in the face of each bearing as shown in the picture of the # L44649.

If your bearings are worn to the point that you cannot read the bearing numbers you will need to use digital calipers like # PTW80157 to precisely measure your spindle according to the included diagram.

While there are no disc brakes confirmed to fit a 4200lb axle your bearing combination would need to be # 25580 and # 15123 to use the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit - 12" Hub/Rotor - 6 on 5-1/2 - Dacromet/KodaGuard - 5,200 to 6,000 lbs # K2HR526DKG which has the 6 on 5-1/2" bolt pattern you need to reuse your current wheels.

Moving on to an electric option, electric trailer brakes are actually becoming quite popular on new boat trailers. To recommend the correct hubs and braking assemblies I will still need to know your bearing combination.

If you can send me an email with your bearing combination I would be happy to go over in-depth the specific components needed for your axle.

I included a link to a helpful article on adding electric drum brakes, and adding hydraulic disc brakes for you to take a look at.
