I had to replace the old 7 wire cable because the male plug had been pulled off. I chose the WH54006-043 coiled cable. I used a 1/2 inch clamp to hold the cable up at the box and a Connect-to-Protect to hold up the male plug. The result Is clean and tidy. Thank you,

I first bought the 6ft coiled cable but the tension was just to great to stretch 6ft. I then replaced the 6ft. cable with an 8ft. cable. Less tension but when turning it really needs to be a 10ft. cable. I did not see a 10ft cable for sale nor have I found one. E-trailer, let me know if you get 10ft cable’s. Otherwise the coiled cable’s are great. See my old photos.

I just opened up my new Class 5 Curt XD hitch and have not yet installed it so my comments are based on first impressions only. It is very heavy duty - and heavy at 40 lbs. - made of extremely thick metal and outfitted with quality Grade 8 bolts with square necks so they won’t turn when torquing on the nuts to attach the main tube to the side mounting plates. My bolts are plated yellow (which I like) rather than silver as you may have seen in some online photographs. It is substantially beefier than my existing Grade 4 hitch and superior in every way. It’s an impressive piece of hardware. I cannot imagine anyone being disappointed with it on specifications, quality, strength, and general appearance. It’s a beast. What I AM disappointed in is Curt’s packaging and the condition in which the hitch arrived. (This is NOT a reflection on etrailer.com as the hitch arrived in Curt’s original packaging.) The unassembled main tube and the two side mounting plates come bundled together with nothing separating them but shrink wrap. No cardboard, plastic, even paper coming between the metal surfaces - just shrinkwrap probably not even a couple of mils thick. With basically metal-to-metal contact in an oversized-box with the bundle jostling around, it would be a miracle if there were no scratches, gouges, or some type of damage to at least one piece, which is exactly what happened to my hitch. The main hitch tube, on the exterior facing plane, on the driver side where I’ll see it every day, has some gouges on it that go through the powder-coating to bare metal. I can - and will - paint them to prevent rust (and, therefore, have to paint the whole hitch to match). But the gouges will still be noticeable as they go through the thicker, pebbly, powder-coat finish and will undoubtedly still appear as depressions in the surface even once painted. I fully realize this kind of surface damage will almost certainly happen with regular usage of the hitch anyway and that it’s certifiable to demand absolute perfection in anything. But if you are someone who cares about the aesthetics of your equipment and keeping it looking new for as long as possible, it is very disappointing to receive such an expensive and prominent piece of hardware damaged right out of the box and requiring immediate repainting. The plastic parts bag had also ripped open in transit, with nuts, bolts, shims, etc. rattling around in the box. I am dumbfounded that Curt packages such a high-quality piece of equipment so shoddily where such damage is virtually unavoidable. I bought from Curt solely due to their being an American manufacturer and to support American workers so this is doubly discouraging. It’s a trivial complaint in the big scheme of things and not worth demanding a replacement over. Just be aware that unless Curt changes their packaging practices it is very possible you will have the wind taken out of your towing project sails just as I have. Again, this in no way reflects on etrailer. My experience to date with etrailer (website, educational resources, staff reviews, ordering, tracking, email contact, etc.) has been beyond exemplary in every way. They rank as a Top Five online retailer in my opinion, maybe even the best.

works great for my trailer

by:

I love having this coiled wiring plug on my trailer. the trailer gets towed with several different vehicles which have their plugs various distances away from the hitch ball. It's so nice to be able to reach the plug wherever it is without worrying about the cord dragging or having to wrap it around something when I don't need that much length.

Wiring it up was easy, although I seem to recall that the wire colors don't match the standard that you see most places. That was a very minor hurdle to overcome.

A year after install, it's still working great. I'd definitely buy this again if I was wiring another trailer.

by:

This should work great, installation is still on my to do list.

by:

Works as advertised.

With this harness the wiring code may not be what you expect. Please see the wiring code table on the product page as it shows what the color and function is versus what the trailer wire is.

I ordered all the parts required to safely flat tow out 2017 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk from etrailer.com. The only part they didn't have was the Mopar Flat Tow Enhancement kit Jeep requires to flat tow this model.

Ordering from them was great, the website is easy to use and I was able to locate all the pieces compatible with my specific vehicle. The expert recommendations help my decision choosing the right parts. I ordered from etrailer even though I found some of the parts on other websites a little cheaper. I chose to pay a little more because of all the effort etrailer has put into installation videos and guides. I was very pleasantly surprised to learn from etrailer that they have a price match guarantee!

So my equipment consisted of the following

Mopar Flat Tow Enhancement Kit (from Jeep)

Roadmaster Battery Charge Line Kit for Towed Vehicles

Mighty Cord 7-Way RV Style Trailer Connector - Trailer End

WesBarg 7-Way, RV-Style Connector w/ 6' Long Coiled Cable Trailer End

Pollak Black Plastic, 7-Pole, RV Blade-Style Trailer Socket - Vehicle End

Hopkins Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles

SMI Stay-IN-Play DUO Supplemental Braking System

Roadmaster Brake-Lite Relay Kit for Towed Vehicles

Blue Ox Alpha Tow Bar - Motor Home Mount - 6,500 lbs

Blue Ox Base Plate Kit - Removable Arms

Blue Ox Tow Bar Cover - Aladdin, Aventa LX, Aventa II

The installation videos are great but not all inclusive. Take the time to read the instructions that come with the parts. This is a major project, I took about 30 hrs over a full week but as you'll see in the pictures I took s few extra steps to make a cleaner look.

Some of those extra steps:

The base plate install requires the bumper be modified cutting off a flange on each side, I spray painted this to prevent corrosion.

In the install video of the baseplate on the drivers side they use an extra quick link (not included) to run the safety cable around the wiper fluid reservoir. I took the time to remove it and run the safety cable behind it.

I didn't want our nice new vehicle to look like it can be towed so I played the brake away switch and 7 way trailer plug behind the license plate, so when not being towed our vehicle looks great!

Some things to be aware of. The Brake air cylinder that mounts to the brake pedal with four bolts may need longer bolts, it did on our Jeep. Spend the money for weather tight heat shrink crimp fittings. The Hopkins wire harness was about 1.5 feet short to get to my plug location. Buy extra zip ties, electrical tape and split loom.

I recommend reading all the various installation manuals and watching all the videos because the various components integrate together and if you install one at a time you'll be doing a bunch of extra work.

The brake light relay is a real pain in the butt, not because of the hardware but because of the location of the brake light switch which is very hard to get to.

Overall I am very happy with the products and how the installation looks. We haven't towed it yet but do not expect any problems.

Still very happy with our purchase. We’ve towed over 10k miles and have had zero issues with our tow setup. I’ve shared my experience with several other RVrs and recommended your company for their needs. Thank you

I use this product as an extention from my truck to my camper. I needed something to take up the slack so wiring wouldn't drag on the ground but still be able to stretch while turning corners. Works great!

Working great. I can connect and disconnect my trailer quickly.

I bought 4 Magnetic Trailer brakes (Hayes/AL-KO 12" x 2" Electric Brake Assembly) which were a breeze to install. While testing the brakes I found that one of the four magnets were not properly engaging. I quickly called etrailer's customer care and they were able to replace the whole assembly. I was relieved to find that the replacement worked normally. Overall, all the products that were purchased were high quality and fit my needs. Thank you etrailer, and I look forward to doing business with you guys again :)

by:

I gave this coiled trailer cord set a 5 star rating because of the quality of construction and that the individual conductors appear to have a fine stranded construction that will take numerous extensions and retractions. The receptacle cord cap looks to be durable, but only time will tell on that point. The hot (+ black) and the ground (- white) conductors look to be a size 12 gauge and the (Blue) electric brake conductor looks to be a size 14 gauge size. The others are probably a size 16 gauge wire. The cord is heavy so your plug cap needs to be fully latched to the stub sticking up on the plug or it may pull out. Also I purchased the 6 foot one and now wish I had purchased the 8 foot version because of the high strength retraction capabilities of the cord, but that is my issue not the cords.

After wiring 7 wire coiled plug pigtail into new breakaway battery box , utilizing two 5/8” wire/hose routing clamps to secure pigtail to trailer frame for specific routing application to reduce recoil pressure of plugin from vehicle plug outlet , it works great with adequate length of cable for any sharp turns .

by:

This is the second coil wire I have purchased, its a great product! It would be helpful to include a wire diagram as its different than most 7 pin color wire configurations but easy to find on the etrailer site.

They are both excellent products, I highly recommend them to friends and coworkers. Not often I find well made products and great customer service in the same place.

by:

My cable just came in and I'm really looking forward to installing it on my trailer today. This is clearly high quality, with a thick, durable jacket and a molded-on connector that should prevent wire strain at the terminals. Heavy, 10 gauge wire means strong transmission of power to the lights and brakes, and having the wires coiled means no more dragging on the ground! Definitely an upgrade for my trailer!

by:

There might be 6 feet of wire in this, but about 3 feet is the max it is going to stretch without breaking something at one end or the other. Seems to be good quality other than that.

by:

The wiring has performed flawlessly after one year.

by:

Great product.

by:

Used this product to replace the damaged cable on my dump trailer. Very good quality connector. Stays flexible in the cold weather.

by:

Works great! I accidentally ordered an RV plug for a dump trailer and had to match the wires by continuity rather than color, but product works very well.

by:

Item is exactly what I was looking for. I had destroyed three cords by dragging the middle of the cord on the road when it slid through my 5th wheel tailgate. This item stops that problem dead in its tracks.

by:

Been looking for one of these for a while to keep from winding excess cable around jack or possibly dragging it on the pavement. A friend told me about etrailer and I saw it and had to order one. Great quality and works perfectly. Great company to order from.

by:

Replacing my straight cable with a 6' Long Coiled Cable on my boat trailer was easy to install and will keep the cable out of the way when unplugged.

by:

Replaced straight pigtail with this one and it don't get caught on anything in bed and stays plugged in.

  • Will WesBarg RV Style 7-Way Trailer Connector Work on Utility Trailers with Brakes
Yes, the WesBarg RV Style Connector # WG54006-043 will work on your utility trailers. The only difference between a traditional RV style 7-way and a utility trailer 7-way is the wire color. The pins of the connector are the same. Therefore wire the connector on by function not color. Which is always a good idea anyway.

For the Wesbar 7-way with coiled harness # WG54006-43 the coil length is 8 -1/2 inches. It's hard to say exactly how much force in lbs is used to stretch out the harness but it's not too difficult. We have the wiring color code pretty prominently displayed in the product description. We don't have a different version of this that uses the other wiring color code but as long as you follow the wiring colors by function it will work just as well.

  • 7-Way Trailer Wiring Connector to Reach 6 Feet from Junction Box to Vehicle
Stretching the 7-Way Trailer Connector # WG54006-043 to 6 feet isn't the best option for you. It'll reach 6 feet but the coils are fairly tight. I extended it easily to about 4 feet but beyond that it wanted to fight me. It'll loosen up over time of course but I think a longer cable would be better for you. The 12 foot, part # WG54006-046, is a better choice, but then it'll hang lower to the ground.

For the 12 foot long version the coiled portion is 19 inches long and from end to end measures 3 feet unstretched.

  • Can 4-Way of Boat Trailer Be Replaced with Coiled 7-Way
The part # WG54006-043 could pretty easily replace a 4-way on a trailer like what you have. It would basically be just cutting off the 4-way and wiring the 7-way in it's place.
