Weight Distribution Diagram

Create a more stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight distribution system.

Forged Steel Spring Bars

The round spring bars are made from forged steel, giving them a distinct advantage over typical cast steel bars. Forging is a process where thermal and mechanical energy are applied to the steel, resulting in a finished product that is more resilient to impacts and is stronger in terms of shear strength. Simply put, these spring bars do a superior job of helping to hold your trailer in line because of their added strength and durability.

Built-In Grease Zerks

Built-in grease zerk on the Curt weight distribution system head assembly

The system's head features 2 built-in grease zerks so that you can easily lubricate the spring bars without having to remove them from the head assembly. The grease zerks are located on each of the shafts that encase the spring bars. Simply use a grease gun (sold separately) to inject grease into each of the zerks.

Bought used from etrailer. Quick ship, free ship, good price. Haven't installed yet. This unit is HEAVY DUTY.

by:

I can't speak on the product performance as I haven't hooked it up just yet. It was delivered a few hours ago and it arrived with a damaged box (basically split in half, I'm guessing since it was so heavy). I understand this won't affect it's performance but when you buy something brand new, you expect it fully painted without damage. I really don't want to fool with sending it back. I will attach some pictures with this review. Consider it a heads up when purchasing.

This works amazing! The price was the best and it was in stock.

Its been great using this for the year. One link on the chains has rusted a bit is the only thing but not an issue.

by:

E trailer was very professional to deal with after a couple of delivery hiccups(UPS) issues. Took the camper out for it's maiden voyage and the System worked great! defiantly recommend this product and company.

by:

Works great in tandem with sway control. Easy to adjust ride height for different tongue weights.

Works great and easily adapts to various tongue weights.using wsway control.

by:

It came With no instructions, had to go online to find manual in order to set it up

by:

Prior Curt WD Hitch was stolen off my truck so ordered the same product again since I'm familiar with it. NO SURPRISES! Just as advertised, same quality I've come to expect from Curt. In the process of getting it put together and use for first trip of the season.

by:

Well-made system that interchanged seamlessly with my last one. Delivery was prompt too.

by:

I love it mostly. Only problem is when I turn sharp it pinch my plug in cord. I have rerouted that so all is good now.

by:

Replaced a fastaway e2 with this. This hitch does what it is supposed to and with built in plate for friction sway control ball mounts it can be used with almost any trailer. The hitch was very easy to setup and I have transferred it between multiple trucks and setting up each time to about 20 minutes tops. Good reliable hitch.

by:

I installed this in less than an hour. Worked perfectly with my camper. Gave me a nice smooth ride. I'm very happy with this set up.

by:

The equalizer hitch we purchased was more hitch than we needed to pull our ALiner, but we found that we were glad to have made this choice. We traveled though the Rocky Mountains, Oregon, Yellowstone Park and back home without any hint of problems. The hitch worked so well that we had little to no sway, went up mountain passes with ease, and were pleased with the weight distribution. We did have a learning curve on how to use the hitch, but we are novices on pulling anything. We found that it was very easy to use.

by:

Easy to install . Distributes the weight like it's supposed to . Thank you

by:

I have done business with etrailer for many years. Be it trailer hitches, tow bars, brake controlers, mirrors - the list goes on and on. Everytime I do a new transaction with them their service, attention to detail and customer satisfaction reinforces to me the rightness of my decision to only do business with them. I have no idea what I will need next but I do know UNEQUIVOCALLY it will be with them!

by:

.Ability to lube load bars is a plus. Load bars should be removed during difficult backing maneuvers.you

by:

The weight distribution system is pretty much standard you should order a new ball with this item.

Heavy duty putting it together if you don't have a one inch drive socket set you might consider taking it and your truck to a RV service center for setting it up. I have a 6000 lbs trailer and an F-150 works great.

by:

I haven't had a chance to use the Curt hitch yet, but the service I got from etrailer was fantastic!! They had information available to match my needs with the proper hitch system....AND delivery time was quick and exceeded my expectations!

by:

Put this on my 2013 Silverado 1500 for towing a travel trailer. It took about 90 minutes to install and make the adjustments. Seems like a good product so far. It will enable me to tow a travel trailer that would have otherwise been too heavy to tow.

by:

Two hours attempting to set this up and ultimately gave up and did not use it. It would not attach to my new trailer even with the pole tongue adapter. Worthless.

by:

I can’t find the pin to one of the arms.

by:

Does the job well, not really a system for someone who has lifting limitations.

by:

The hitch and load bars are extremely well built and etrailers shipped it quickly. Very pleased with purchase.

by:

I will be making my living with this hitch and I trust Curt with all my hitch needs.

by:

Hitch does what it is supposed to with out the cost of buying from somewhere else. etrailer is by far the best price anywhere

by:

Box was broken open, but all the parts where there.
Hitch looks well made , have not used it or assembled it yet, but I think it will work fine.
It is replacing my old hitch that has given me great service, but started giving me problems the last time I used it, it was 35 years old.

  • Pole Tongue Adapter For Chain Style Hangers Weight Distribution Hitch System
Since you are using a weight distribution system like the Curt MV Weight Distribution System # C17052 you will need a Reese Pole-Tongue Adapter # RP58393 that is designed for use with the chain style hangers. This has the structure to support the hanger. The Pole-Tongue Adapter for Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution Systems # EQ95-01-5950 is only compatible with Equal-i-zer and Fastway systems as they have the bolts for the sway bar brackets.

I would be happy to help you find a weight distribution system that will work with your 1999 Ram 2500 truck and travel trailer. I recommend the Curt MV Weight Distribution System item # C17050. Your tongue weight should be right around 10% of your trailer's total weight. This system has a tongue weight range of 500 lbs - 600 lbs and a maximum gross towing weight of 6,000 lbs so it will be perfect for your setup.
